New Zealand’s general election will be held on September 17th, and with less than two days to go, it looks as if it will go right to the wire.  Two polls released tonight show different results, with one showing the opposition leading by six percent, while another shows it two behind.  A third poll shows the government slightly ahead, and a forth will be due out tomorrow, but at this stage nobody can really predict the outcome.  And the “poll of polls” run by Frogblog is now showing a dead heat.

This is a vital election.  The country’s entire direction is at stake, both economically (whether we finally reject the neoliberal revolution of the 90’s – or restart it) and culturally (whether we have harmonious or angry race relations; whether we accept the Pacificisation of our country, or try and fight demographics). And nobody knows how it will go.

It is going to be a real nail-biter tomorrow night…
