[Great, great work by BrotherFeldspar, and others. From the diaries by susanhu. Keep checking this for updates. BooMan and I will “timestamp” it to keep it afloat in the Recent Diaries too.] By popular demand! The consensus Schedule of Events for the upcoming Peace Weekend in DC:
- Friday, 4pm – ???: Happy Hour, etc. at the Capital City Brewery, Downtown, 1100 New York Ave NW, about one block north of Metro Center. The Cap City is kid-friendly, so don’t be shy about bringin’ along the young-uns; we’ll have a table just for them. No doubt you’ve seen that the Word is out not only here, but also at the DailyKos and at My Left Wing, so we expect good turn-out!
- Saturday, 11am: Rendezvous with the contingent of bloggers from dKos, MLW, and elsewhere, at the Visitor’s Center on the Ellipse, towards the northeast corner of the Ellipse near 15th Street. This will be the time and place to meet if you cannot meet us before 11am. This location will place us near the Veterans for Peace contingent when the march itself kicks off. The Kossacks plan to have a large orange flag flying, and no doubt some Tribbers will be sporting BooTrib t-shirts, so keep your eyes peeled for either of those signals.
More details after the flip…
- Saturday, 2pm: the Operation Ceasefire concert kicks off on the grounds of the Washington Monument, with a list of acts too long and illustrious to recount here.
- Saturday evening: nothing formal is planned, but no doubt bloggers will be gathering aroud town for dinner, drinks, and more discussion.
- Sunday: event organizers United for Peace & Justice are holding training sessions for the grassroots activities planned for Monday. There is also the Green Festival taking place, coincidentally, this weekend at the DC Convention Center. Some Tribbers are planning to attend the Green Festival, while others are planning to visit some of the monuments & memorials scattered about the area.
The Green Festival will be a great event in its own right. Taking place on the same weekend as a major march should really boost its attendance Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Please take the time to check out the schedule of speakers, as well as the list of exhibitors. A full schedule and map can be found here in PDF format. Lester Brown, Amy Goodman, and Greg Palast are keynote speakers at the Green Festival on Sunday, while Dennis Kucinich is speaking on Saturday (at the same time as the march, unfortunately). Admission is $15, or only $5 if you arrive via bicycle.
As for visiting monuments, there is a lot of feeling for visiting the Vietnam Memorial Wall, while certainly the well-known Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials are close at hand. In the same vicinity at the west end of the Mall are the FDR Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the new National Memorial to World War II.
So Tribbers, there it all is, and here is your chance:
Sing out in the comments if you know you’re coming to DC for these events, and want to meet up with some fellow Tribbers, either just for the march, or for some other fun and worthwhile activities too.
Sing out in the comments if you’re sitting on the fence about coming, or don’t want to attend by yourself. There’s going to be quite a crowd of us there, and we’re hardly strangers by this point. If you let us know you want to come, we’ll make sure that we can meet up somehow.
Sing out in the comments if you need a place to stay. We may have some limited accomodation Friday and/or Saturday nights, or may be able to help arrange for some if necessary.
Keep an eye on this space for updates and changes. This message has been brought to you by a small group of Tribbers who have been discussing these plans for a couple weeks. Suggestions and comments are more than welcome in the thread below.
