BooBooks Meeting Now at a Diary near you!.
Join the for BooFun!
(But don’t forget to come back here!)
This should be fun! To wild conversations going at the same time.
I’ve put fresh coffee out. And a big plate of fresh toast & cheese. Anyone want to pick up the delivery at the bakery? Their van broke down.
(dashing off to BooBooks — but I’ll be right back)
I don’t have a car (anymore), but I’ll help out with deliveries as best I can:
I have a feeling that this will be my favorite picture of the day!
And I should have known I could count on you. If you can’t count on your brother, who can you count on?
Now that’s all well and good, but please…
Let’s be careful out there.
(Should note for the record: This ain’t my shot. I’ve no idea where it came from; someone sent it to me once and I laughed until I lost a few ugly pounds quickly)
Starting last night I found a number of lefty sites slow or not available. The biggest one is still MIA from here at least. The froggy pond is definitely slow.
<blear, blear> Just off to get my first cuppa Earl Grey <stumble>. Gotta remember to remind Puget4 about Saturday art blogging when she gets up.
there’s a Sober virus attack jamming up the flow and some routing hubs are slower than others. If dKos stays down, I expect an increase in traffic here today from the blog addicted seeking their fix.
I don’t know. Sober spreads via e-mail. I understand if e-mail servers get clogged and slow (I really hated that when I was still an e-mail systems administrator) but www servers? Maybe it’s a DoS attack or something.
was doing server work that took longer than expected.
Now I can get back to watching CNN tell us how we can defeat Islamic terrorism even faster than the British did with the Irish.
and someone is glad.
Obviously, not last night but Sniff did come bounding to see me.
Awww. That’s really sweet.
What a cute puppy. I love beagles.
I think there’s no better dog than a beagle mutt. They are both really smart and good natured.
How’s school going — are you still adjusting?
When I was a kid, our next-door neighbors had a beagle. We had a poodle (not a little yappy one–he was right on the border between miniature and standard).
Our poodle, Sam, learned how to howl by watching the beagle.
Sam would stare at the beagle whenever the beagle let out a howl. Then Sam would stick his nose in the air and open his mouth–but nothing came out. So he’d watch the beagle some more.
Then one night we were all awakened by a gawdawful wail coming from the kitchen. Sam had figured it out. He didn’t sound much like a beagle, though.
We have the beagle mix, a coonhound, and a malamutt who like to do three-howl harmony, especially if there is a siren in the area. It’s actually very wonderful (in a very silly way) to hear them.
If I could just get them to do their singing in the form of a xmas carol, our fortune would be made.
Nothing makes me laugh harder–ever–than hearing a howling chorus of dogs. Of course I am tactful and try not to let them see me do it.
This is such a cute story.
I came in to point out the cafe was closed. And then I realized it was you in here, and I actually rolled my eyes! To the computer screen, I think I’m taking my hosting duties way, way too seriously!
You’ll know you’re in trouble when the computer rolls its eyes back at you.
DON’T ANSWER THIS!
Good morning Katie, I hope you’re feeling much better today. Sorry I can’t help with that pick-up, I don’t drive. Can’t indulge for too long either – too many chores were left for the weekend. I’m listening to a speech by Hugo Chavez, amazing how long a man with ideas can talk.
Hi Alice!
I feel great, thanks (I really appreciate everything). But he’s not a complainer so you won’t hear about it from him.
And don’t worry about the delivery. I’m pretty sure we’ll find a volunteer.
Have fun with your chores!
I was hearing yesterday of Chavez’ plans, well underway, to provide cheaper heating and transportation fuels for some low income urban areas. And was it Oprah’s show that included in some giveaways, cheap Citgo gasoline (Chavez’ U.S. company)?
The syndicate’s going to have to get rid of him pretty soon or he’s going to give the American poor some Ideas.
Hello!
If anyone wants to jaw about college football, come on over to my diary and yammer away!!
Hope everyone is well this morning!
Go Hawks!
Shifra Stein says that KU is the only school with a Jayhawk as a mascot.
Do you know why “we” have that weird cheer, Rock Chalk Jayhawk? I just found out. It has to do with the fact that Kansas has a lot of chalk beds. Like, up in the far northwest corner, in Cheyenne County, there are tall rock-chalk “monuments” in wonderful shapes, and the ground around them is chalk white.
I didn’t say it would make sense. 🙂
🙂
Do you have a link to that? I love Jayhawk trivia (although trivia seems like the wrong word for anything to do with Jayhawks)
I love, love, love the Jayhawk. If I ever get a Master’s degree, it will be largely so I can claim KU as my school. In my heart it is (I went there for about a billion years and worked there for nearly 10) even though I graduated from Ottawa.
Here you go:
LINK: Rock Chalk
Even though I’m a Mizzou alum, I do think the KU cheer is the best one ever. Haunting. Eerie. Way cool.
. . . a sound file of the Rock Chalk chant. (For those of us who don’t have a clue what y’all are talking about.)
Wow! Thank you! I tuned in thinking, “you probably have to be there,” but damn if I didn’t get the old chills from listening to it, and I didn’t even go to that school! The cheer dates back to 1896.
Theodore Roosevelt was reputed to have declared KU’s yell “the greatest college cheer ever devised.” And so the notion grew among those affiliated with the institution that KU had the greatest college cheer in the world.
Janet — Thank you for finding this. So, it seems that other schools don’t have a similar chant?
Happy kidlet – 18 months
Later today I will be posting pics and random thoughts at my blogspot about turning 50. Different pictures and thoughts all weekend – up through this year!
I am embracing this with major enthusiasm…parties start tonight for 4 solid days…and then a year of celebration! Drop by after lunch and see me as a kidlet!
In the meantime I’m digging out all my old rock and roll today!
Have a great day everyone!
Maybe we can get together with Andi (and anyone else who wants to come) and play?
Absolutely – let’s play – and then milk and graham crackers for snacks!
I found a ‘blue dot’ special for Andi…at one of her favorite places…Mexican Hat! One of the view pics of me near a cliff!
So – who else has baby’s pics to post???
I’m really regretting posting that pic. I’m on an emergency computer with a tiny amount of RAM and my screen slogs way, way down everytime I get to this point. So don’t be surprised if it disappears completely.
I didn’t feel sad about 50 either. Might as well pack in as many parties as you can because 51, 52, etc. are so boring they don’t deserve celebration. The next milestone for me will be 60 and I have no idea whether I’ll be happy about that or not; it depends on what I can accomplish in the next couple years.
For years I didn’t like my birthday…I’ll post a link to that story in my blogspot tomorrow…long story.
This one is energizing! And with Shirl and Diane and Puget4 and so many other amazing 60+ women as role models I think I’m going to love this aging stuff!
I believe you’ll accomplish all you set out to do sjct!
and Puget4 “somewhat before” that.
So CONGRATULATIONS! and have a great weekend!
Between healthy diet & lifestyle now, and some plausible medical & genetic developments during the coming generation or so, quite a few of us boomers may be around to see mid century.
That’s t – e – r – err – iffic!
Thanks GR! I’ve read Puget4’s writings on Village Blue and she is one of the role models for me!
This healthy stuff…we could be force to be reckoned with – healthy and energetic old farts!
Cheers to both of you – and the FL Mom too!
today or tomorrow.
Sallycat, happy 50 to you!! Sounds like you’re going to have a blast.
And so you’ll have something to look forward to. . .I turned 60 in September and so far this decade is twice as good as the last one. No kidding. I still have many of the same problems I had then, but I’m just all-round happier for some reason.
Happy, happy, SallyCat!! I will be doing something similar in March when I turn 40 — should be tons of fun!!
Celebrate yourself!
Hugs!
Happy Birthday Sallycat :o)

“Mustang Sally” 1973 with my ’66
The hat is because I was engaged to a sailor at the time…
I had a Mustang in 1973 as well–a yellow ’68 model. Damn, I miss that car!
I had a yellow Mustang, too. Mine was a ’67, and I bought it when it was a couple of years old.
Happy Birthday Sally and many more….love you and hugs…
Beautiful site, SallyCat.
Woohoo!!!!!!!! Cake and ice cream for 4 days. Happy birthday Sally Cat.
Welcome to 50! And many happy returns…
Just want to say that “you’re” welcome to join the BooBooks discussion even if you haven’t read (or finished) the book. Maybe you have things you want to say about atomic energy, or the bomb, or the military/industrial complex, or the Religious right’s obsession with The Rapture. All those are subjects of the book and we’d certainly welcome any light you want to shed, or any questions you want to raise.
But are the spoilers in the BooBook diary? I already know you loved the first half, but not the second…
Well, nobody has told the ending yet, but it is dangerous territory for somebody who’s still reading. I guess this is something we’ll have to consider when picking books. Nobody minds coming in midway while reading non-fiction, but most people hate fiction spoilers.
Since I own almost every album I’ve bought since 1964, I scrounged through them looking for just the right one to celebrate your birthday and I think I found it.
Peace and Love!
1968 Original Cast Album (with original 1968 dorm room grunge on it)
That album cover is great!
Another favorite album cover – Santana “Cats”…
It looks like KatieBird has ram issues so I’m going to slow down on pics for a while!
Thanks for birthday memory pic!
Hair was one of our favorite musicals when I was in high school (I’m a few years behind you). All the songs were in our singing rotation from 1969 through 1973 at least, maybe 1974.
I spent a week with my sister Julie a year ago or so and we had a great time singing songs from Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar.
(my siblings and I always sing in the car & since we are only rarely together now-a-days we have family sing-a-longs at every reunion. They have fantastic voices)
Not much on the go this weekend. I have papers to grade and some cleaning to do. We might go see the Santa Clause parade this evening. It’s pretty cold (27), so we’ll see.
Here’s and Andrew up-date. Next week, he will finally be able to travel across the tunnel to the States. I hope his visa arrives before Thursday, maybe I’ll take him to the Al Franken book signing.
I have been trying to attach a photo, but it keeps coming out “ginormous.” I’ll try it in a bit.
Finally. Too small, but I seem to be having difficulties today.
yes, it’s the pictures that got small, his cuteness is huge.
OMG! He is too cute- can I come babysit?
No baby-sitter yet for this little guy, but you are free to stop by for tea.
OMG it’s cold and everyone is so aggro out there I need a drink! Hot cider with a splash of something very strong please.
Thank you Katiebird!
Here, I’m just gonna leave some of these around, in case anyone’s feeling tense…
::whistles and wanders off::
Let’s open the new joint!
