In this photo released by the U.S. Marine Corps, an Iraqi boy is treated by U.S. military medical personnel after being evacuated from Parwana, Iraq following a mortar attack Friday, Dec. 16, 2005 against a school in the insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad which killed four children playing soccer and an Iraqi army soldier, according to U.S. Marines. The attack was carried out in the western Euphrates River valley town of Parwana as soldiers cleaned up the school, which had been used as a polling station during Thursday’s elections.

After
by T. R. Hummer
After the explosion, no one knew what to do
For the boy who’d stood closest to the abandoned leather briefcase.
By some miracle, he was the only one injured. It erupted
In an incense of sulfur and nails as he made his way
To steal it. Holiness has an aura, everyone knows that,
But why would terrorists bother to murder a thief?
The ethics of this question paralyzed everyone in sight
While the boy, unable to breathe, watched God wandering
The station in a business suit, asking occasional strangers
Have you seen my briefcase? There was something urgent in it.

For every child that has been maimed, wounded or killed in Iraq…I weep.
Support the troops…bring them home NOW!
And how will the children learn to trust, in such a world?
And how will their parents live without fear, being unable to protect their children?
And how will parents sleep at night, whose children have been killed?
that they attempt to piece back together that which they’ve caused to be blown apart by their illegal invasion. How is it possible to be compassionate and murderous at the same time? These are strong words, and they leave me uneasy. But there is no longer any other way to see this. What’s needed now is a strong dose of Kevin Benderman backbone
