A car bomb exploded Tuesday at an outdoor market in a Shiite area of southwestern Baghdad, killing 22 people and injuring 28, police said. It appeared to be the deadliest car bombing against civilians in the capital in weeks.

note: I generally don’t try to explain my choice of image or text, and I certainly don’t want to over-explain. Still, looking at RATM lyrics as static print on the page instead of hearing them at high volume and in full fury makes me think that some comment might help inform you regarding my choice of them today.

My decisions on what to include for pretty much every diary in this series are spontaneous, and based on my feelings and reactions at the time that I sit down to put them together. The relationship between image and text is never intended to be a literal one, as in “I’m using this poem to explain that picture,” or vice versa.

The links between the two are also as personal as they are incomplete and ephemeral, so whatever I see or feel is not intended to be the model or standard for however you choose to react.

The song was simply one of the first sounds I heard in my head when I learned of the bombing of the Shi’ite shrine in Samarra, and started looking at the wire service images of the damage and the angry crowds.  That’s about as much of an explanation as I can offer.

I also can’t explain what the members of Rage – Zack De La Rocha (Vocals), Brad Wilk (Drums), Tom Morello (Guitars), and Tim Commerford (Bass) – had in mind when they wrote, recorded, or performed the song. This diary is just my experience of this event for this moment. Thanks.
