Marmotdude Celebrates Avoiding Reality Day
This is an Unhosted Cafe.
Coffee, Tea and stronger stuff under the window.
Bad-for-you eats on the tables.
Bad-for-you eats on the tables.
Sand for head-burying in buckets by the door.
|
Please recommend (and unrecommend the Cafe/Lounge from earlier)
|
May the 4’s be with you
Is it alright if I bury my feet in the sand instead of my head?
at the rate things are going I’d still recommend the head heading off into another dimension.
Why in the world would you bury your feet in your head?
I don’t know.
Maybe just to lay down and roll away I guess ;o)
People continue to suffer around the world and yet this fucking Ferrari story continues to occupy home page space at the LA Times site (and others). How about some real news?!!
LA Times Link
Oh, on second thought, I guess that the “death” of a car is truly important news.
I guess Cabin Girl and I were wrong that you would appreciate some light news in the News Bucket today?
Apparently so. All that fluffiness for nothing. sigh.
The way I heard it on SF radio this morning, it was an undocumented immigrant effing Ferrari.
Where are the Minutemen when you really need them?!!
Is it my imagination, or is that marmot covered with snow?
nah, just frost
dandruff
Hello, all! Wonderful to see you, as always — & it’s especially nice to see a cafe’ devoted to one of my favorite pursuits.
At least these days I’m not risking arrest on felony charges š
Our heavy skies have just opened to shed some light, fluffy snowflakes (rather thickly). Hope it doesn’t last long past my java breakfast — things to do, places to be, realities to avoid etc.
Thankfully, it’s only a short time now ’til Spring Equinox (day & night of equal length, moving toward the longest day of the year).
Afternoon, WW.
I hope you are currently able to avoid the reality of your house’s questionable plumbing.
Hey there, Andi.
Yep, the plumbing is probably the prime reality I’m currently avoiding (at least on the local level). I keep thinking the Magical Icicle Fairy’s gonna drop by & empty the outlet pipe for me.
Sadly, though, I’m sure she’s been waylaid by half the homes in the Northeast — so she may not make it before aforementioned Equinox.
How’s yer weather out there? Everyone snug & comfy?
I was hoping you could avoid because it was working again. Sorry to have brought up a point of misery.
We’re having mild days and cold nights because there are no clouds. It was beautifully starry last night.
Same here, Andi. Last night was truly spectacular — even rarely seen star formations were clearly visible.
I suppose that’s it for a few more days, though, with this intense cloud-cover.
Not to worry about the sink reminder, dear. I get a reminder every time I happen to glance at the sink & see it piled high with filthy water & filthier dishes š
Ah well, one more cup of coffee for the road …
Morning / afternoon all.
Completely blown day here and it’s not even noon. It appears that the city has chosen today to trim all the old elms and maples on the streets adjoining mi casa…chain saws and chippers since 7 am…I am outta here.
Catch ya’ll at Happy Hour.
Peace
My recipe for avoiding reality today includes some narcotics generously rxed to me by my oral surgeon, along with a very effective anti-nausea drug to make the narcotics work right. I’m feeling quite fond of him right about now.
Comfortably numb eh?
Sweet :o)
Hey there, Indy — glad you’re feeling no pain!
I’m guessing you were prescribed some manner of codeine formulation. Just fyi — in case you’re not already aware — it also helps their effectiveness & calms nausea if you can eat something with ’em, even if it’s just yogurt.
I’m taking percocet. And I can’t even take Tylenol or VitC without eating, so I’m pretty habituated about it, but thanks for looking out for me. š
Happy to do so, Indy. Why spend a decade on opiates if one can’t share the wisdom? š
Indy I agree with WW. I’m on some pretty strong stuff for migraines and even with nausea pills it does help to try and eat something.
All the dental work go okay?
So far it has gone exceptionally well. If I can avoid dry socket & infection I’m home free. I credit the powerfully good vibes of the Cafe denizens. š
I’m glad the good vides are working, but share a little with me. I leaving in a minute for a visit with my oral surgeon. I’ll let you know the outcome when I get back.
Take Care.
I’ve been avoiding dental work for waaay too long; have to find a new dentist, which I hate. I have a couple of postcards on the refrigerator for some nearby dental clinics; will probably pick one and set an appointment for April, when spouse is on vacation next, since he’ll probably have to come help with the insurance paperwork (the dental insurance is in his name — I’m listed as a dependent). I know I need a good cleaning, and I have a crown that may need replacing (when I last went to the dentist several years ago, he mentioned replacing the crown and it would cost about $400 even after insurance, and we didn’t have the money then — we have it now though). Not sure about cavities — have only had three small ones that my dentist at the time thought were due to defects in tooth development. (The crown was from breaking a tooth on a boyfriend’s cooking…)
{{{big huge good vibe-y hugs to Family Man}}}
I hope everything goes as well as possible!
Before I step out, I’d like to say that folks who can take care of their teeth properly are exceptionally lucky — though it might not feel that way when you’re on your way to ‘the chair’. Imo, this type of care is highly worthwhile, regardless of obscene cost. The alternative to incurring those costs seems to be a situation like mine, in which my teeth simply continue to deteriorate & crumble, while attendant gum diseases also compromise my well-being overall.
You are so right. Bad teeth & gums run in my family, and I’d inherited them to begin with (teeth were always straight, but not really healthy/sturdy). Then when I became disabled with my autoimmune disease, the pace at which my teeth have been deteriorating became alarming.
And dental work is ridiculously expensive. I can only afford mine because I inherited a little money after my mom passed away, so every time I go, I dip into the savings. Is there a good student facility nearby you, maybe, like a dental college where you could wince through but maybe swing the more necessary work?
Hi, Indy — I’m back after a long, lovely walk in the woods.
When I lived in Manhattan I was fortunate enough to live within easy walking distance to NYU’s dental school — quite a wonderful thing. (I also helped further the education of many young people by willingly exposing the tracks on my arms — always fascinating.)
Nowadays, the closest thing I’ve got is called ‘pliers’ š
Ah, the cleansing spirit of nature.
Been thinking about your solstice comment, listening to john Mclaughlin, chasing an appropriate image in my mind…Since I don’t now where this is in the thread, I’ll share it with you this way
from me to you, blessings my friend.
Peace
Wow — call me stunned. Thank you! What a truly beautiful image. Gave me chills, actually.
Thank you so much, dada. May the blessings you’ve offered return to you abundantly!
Wowee! At home, on line, listening to KJAZZ and life is lovely. Merci mille foix froggybottom and marmotdude….. must go fetch a cup of French Italian roast…. hmmm……..
You all must visit Hanson Robotics to read more about the man who mistook his girlfriend for a robot, robots are getting more cheeky, more sociable, more…. well, more like us!
HANSON ROBOTICS
p.s. did booman tribune recently become BLUE, or is it me? Did it go from being Booman Tribune — Boo! to “A Progressive Community” and is someone ready to talk about why I could not access BooTrib while in Heathrow Airport, and why it doesn’t come up on GOOGLE?
my newest favorite way to at least sweeten reality? Books on tape (well, on iPod actually, but they used to be called books on tape). This works best if you choose funny stuff or fantasy stuff, or my favorite, funny fantasy (hello, Terry Pratchett!)
You can listen in the car if you get those foamy earphones so you can still hear the world. You can listen waiting in lines, working out, or at the town counsel meeting during the hour before your issue comes up. People do look at you funny when you giggle in public, but they’re just jealous. š
I can’t recommend The Truth With Jokes for this purpose, though. It’s an excellent book, and it is funny, but it made me so mad I could spit.
Avoiding Reality day! A holiday I could get behind — that is, if it weren’t where I would like to be spending all my time. (But then I guess Christmas qualifies in that category, too.)
Hey, apropos of almost nothing, a friend turned me on to this service. Fully customizable, so for instance if for whatever reason you don’t have a Gmail account you can remove the Gmail box from the page.
http://www.netvibes.com
I’m usually the last guy on the planet to find out about stuff like this, so my apologies if everyone already knows about it.
Oh, and when you’re adding content, here are two good sites:
The Bootrib RSS feed — http://www.boomantribune.com/booman.rdf
The Bootrib Comments RSS Feed — http://www.moosegrins.com/bootrib/bootrib.xml
the second of these created and hosted by yours truly, and guaranteed to work as long as Andy doesn’t mess with the diaries page layout (the version that picks up Big Orange broke a version or two back and I’ve never had the oomph to fix it).
Okay, I know I should know the answer to this but can someone tell me the history of the marmot?
He’s a mythical creature that can only be seen by someone with an addictive personality who is easily hypnotized.
You trying to tell us something?
but how did the marmot become a mascot for the Cafe?
before my time
and, what marmot?
Manee was feeling down one night and I posted the original picture of the marmot and told him he need to bliss out like the marmot (who in the picture is lying in grass, eating flowers and looking very stoned). After that the marmot would get mentions and pop now and again. Manee and I finally decided he needed a name and we hit on Marmotdude. And then Marmotdude insisted on showing a lot more and in various guises.
In other words, like many of the Cafe humor bits, it started innocently enough but turned into a running joke when we beat it to death and resurrection again like we are wont to do around here, and then a Legendary Mascot was
crowned.
I’m glad you struck out the rubber underpants as that was probably the Dude’s and my low point.
Hookah marmot was a good one…
Great minds — I just said to SallyCat that one was a favorite along with the dirty marmotini. Might as well fill up this cafe with Marmotdude, the king of the reality avoiders.
I took it back to the beach….no Marmotude…
Ooops….
as the Marmotini!
That and the hookah are
Marmotdude’s favorites.
L’chaim.
we need an official Cafe and Lounge historian.
If the marmot made Manny feel better then he is a good marmot. Good marmot.
“we need” he says, innocently
I don’t think the cafe/lounge/breakfast bar should have a historian. Historians are concerned with facts, or at least the selection of facts. Cafes and lounges are great places for stories. Everyone knows that facts should never get in the way of a good story.
well said teacherman
Embellishment is a good thing…just ask an Irishman, or better yet, listen to one.
Peace
If only Manee could hear us; reminiscing about him so nicely.
And marmotdude must be missing him. So much.
Poor marmotdude. If only there was some way for Manee to hear …
(I may not be able to see marmots all the time, but I know when invisible lurkers exist)
Yes, if only Manee could hear the old, perverted women reminiscing about our hot, Latino studmuffin. We do miss him so…
Lotion and towels all ready for his return.
Yeah, I miss him too. š
<sigh>
when he’s around I’m not afraid of the chickens …
Ha. He makes fun of my chickens on his blog, doesn’t he? I knew it.
:::sniff:::
I’m sure it wasn’t personal, I only wish he could tell you that himself.
I’m going to go quietly to the beach…and then the world is gone from my mind. People are too serious – about change, about kid pranks, about blogs, about there jobs, and most of all about politics.
So…now I’m going to wade into the water and dance by the afternoon sunset until moonrise.
A friend for Marmotdude….
Back to work to me…no moon dancing today…deadline tomorrow at 8am.
Hopeful wants to know if he’ll come over and play.
Ever notice that the electronic-mechanic-plumbing gremlins strike when you’re exceptionally tired, sick, or very busy?
Blogging will be on and off due to one machine going kerplute, and having to “wrestle” MsNDD, for this machine. [ (“)s added above to avoid any possibility of mb confusion.]
The owner of my favorite coffee will see if he can save me another trip out of town to my usual guru.
I doubt if any quote marks are going to keep maryb from indulging in creative imagery but I know it isn’t going to stop me.
“The creative mind plays with the object it loves.” Jung.
And now its time for me to go play for the evening. Sorry about the gremlins NDD.
I’ll be back later (good night Andi) and we can have a formal seance for the spirit of Manee.
I take you’ll be back after we geriatrics have gone to bed.
I hope you check this cafe when you get back because there’s proof that you know your lurkers.
Whatever you North Dakotans need to do to keep warm, you just go right ahead.
Bummer NDD…I foretell a new machine in your immediate future. I also have heard, from sources that shall remain nameless, that Mrs.NDD is a formidable opponent.
Peace
Hello everybody, just got back from the tortures of the dental chair. I had three extractions done and although it not comparable to a migraine – this shit hurts!
THREE AT ONCE?! Your surgeon is a sadist. At the very least, I hope s/he gave you a lot of good drugs, Family Man.
She gave me loracet. It weaker then what I take for my migraines, but as i mentioned over at KB’s place, even if she hadn’t given me anything, I wouldn’t take my migraine medicine. Some pain is just so bad you don’t want to chance being without something for relief. I’m waiting now for the medicine to kick in.
One word for you; SMOOTHIES.
Thanks SN, you must have read my mind.
{{{{{ManE & Bud}}}}
Right back at ya.
We miss you both.
We are not the management.
I can always count on you for the blunt truth.
No blunts here but we can still take a toke together.
Ditto the above.
Yo Manny and Bud! Tuesday’s ain’t the same mi amigo.
Peace
You know if there was one thing I could change on this program it would be the ability to give all 4’s with a single click. If you come in late to a cafe you start getting finger cramps from clicking fours.
But then again, reality has started getting a little fuzzier and the clicking doesn’t seem that important.
When you come late to a cafe, you are excused from having to go back and give out four’s. Just start giving them to new comments.
It sounds like you a need a little nap. And feel better soon.
Thanks Andi. Actually the pain medicine has an opposite effect on me. Instead of putting me to sleep it makes me hyper.
I don’t think this is uncommon at all, once there’s some resistence.
Just curious, FM: what do you use for migraine?
I take daily 1000mg of Depakote (anti convulsive) as a preventive. When the migraine starts I take 2 percocet-10, 50 mg of Promethazine and benadryl for the itching. This combo is taken every three to four hours until the migraine is over. I’ve had some last 5 or 6 hour and some last for 3 days. After a bad one it can take me 2 or 3 days to just feel normal again.
Thanks for your reply — of interest to me, since I also experience migraines but haven’t yet seen a physician about it.
So it seems you’re experiencing the common allergic reaction to the codeine & the Promethazine/benadryl are meant to suppress the reaction .. ?
The Benadryl only suppresses the itching from the oxycodone. The Promethazine is for the severe nausea I get along with the migraine.
I used to take triptans (imitrex) which helped a lot, but since my bypass surgery I can’t take those anymore.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask me. I’ve been dealing with these for over 20 years now and have gone through just about every regimen out there.
Thanks kindly for that offer, FM. Unfortunately, there’s no taking advantage of any regimen than requires cash layout right now. I have some hydrocodone tucked away that I can use when in very dire straits, which seems to suffice.
I glad you have something to fall back on. I’ve gone through migraines before with nothing at all and to anyone that has never had one, there is no explaining the pure agony. One suggestion though. If you don’t have any promethazine, the next time you go to the store pick up some Dramamine. Although not as strong as promethazine, it will help with the nausea and boost the power of the pain meds.
Good Luck WW
(Yes, I know the place is closed, but ..)
Just wanted to thank you for your thoughts. Nausea’s not a problem.
Evening all! Just had to pop in to say howdy and share the news. I just received my t shirt for the Great SoCal meetup and it is great! I am soooooooo looking forward to meeting all that are making the trek out here. Only another month and we’ll be hugging in person. Can’t wait.
link available for the shirts? May have missed the original announcement in my sleep…
Hey Cali…go to http://www.cafepress.com and in the search box put Booman Tribune and that should bring it up. let me know if you have problems.
An Equinox meetup? Equillent! š
Personally, I’m hoping for a Nor’easter meetup in my (literal) neck o’ the woods. Any news on that, CabinGirl?
I’ve kind of been waiting for boran2 to put up another diary, or else maybe pass some of the responsibility on to me so I can (I think he’s been busy lately)…
Ah, yes — so it goes. Thanks for your reply! Still thinking of Big Indian?
Yep.
Good!
I was discussing the possibility with my friend Isis (also a BooTrib community member, though relatively quiet these days) & we thought we both might make it up there to say hello.
I might be able to go up & have a look for you, once the weather calms a bit & plans are a bit more definite.
24/7 Lounge opened over here.
