That’s right. The Katrina evacuees are royally pissed. How pissed? Well, for starters, they’re suing the federal government for making them homeless, again:
NEW ORLEANS — About two dozen hurricane evacuees living on a cruise ship south of New Orleans were taking the federal government to court Monday in a bid to keep the ship docked and the government paying for it.
Their lawsuit claims the Federal Emergency Management Agency failed to provide alternative housing and had shown no evidence it would by Wednesday, FEMA’s deadline for releasing the cruise ships it had rented.
“FEMA has bungled its assignment,” the lawsuit alleges. “FEMA acted incompetently before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina struck, and failed to heed warnings and take preventive actions that could have saved lived and alleviated suffering.”
FEMA’s official reaction? FEMA spokeswoman Nicol Andrews claimed FEMA had done everything it could to provide housing assistance to those in need. Isn’t that gratifying to know when you’re being tossed out on your ear into a still polluted and unreconstructed urban environment to fend for yourself?
By the way, one of the plaintiffs is a disabled woman. Maybe, if she’s lucky, George Bush will make another trip to N’awlins and use her as part of his next photo opportunity. It is, after all, Mardi Gras season again, and we all know how Bushie loves a good party.
