MLP: On Religion and ‘The Gay’

Hey fellow BooTribbers! I’ve got an interesting link, and a bit of “meta”. The reason I’m writing this diary is to share a little Canadian news with you. Quebec priests challenge Vatican on homosexuality.

I’ll say a couple words about that below the fold; but the other reason I’m writing – the “meta” part – is to explain this whole “MLP” thing.  In short, MLP stands for “Mindless Link Post” (or Propigation). Scoop blogs from days past have used MLP to denote a “story” that was little more than a link.  I use it as an excuse to not go into any detail about my thoughts on a subject, even though the subject may be worthwhile.
I think the community here is wonderful – you’re a diverse and thoughtful lot – and I’d love to debate back and forth with you all day. For various reasons, I often can’t find the time, and I regret this. But, rather than just sit out on the sidelines, I’ll often huck up an “MLP” diary, for whatever it’s worth. I’m sorry again if I don’t get a chance to respond to your comments, but I appreciate when you leave them. (Hell, I don’t even need the 4’s, but it helps to know you care 😉 ). I think a quick MLP diary is better than not participating at all.

Anyway, I said I’d say something more about the topic, despite trying to do another “drive-by MLP diary”…. So, here’s my one take-away thought from this article:

So many progressives spend so much of their time playing the defense. Worrying about Roe v. Wade, worrying about whether the Dem’s are in favour of “same sex marriage” or “same sex partnership”. Now, I see it as a good thing that we’ve got folks attending to all those issues. But, I’m really proud of what the Catholics have done here. They’ve gone on the offensive. They’ve laid out their case plain and clear. And in doing so, they’ve implicitly made their rebuttal to the multitude of other issues that could bleed them to death like so many paper cuts.

One more thing… some context for those who aren’t up on their Canadian politics. Quebec is mostly francophone and Catholic, and hasn’t signed the Canadian constitution. I could be wrong, but I believe they’re the only province in our Confederation with an official religion. So, what their bishops say would carry some weight.
