“Karl’s got Rove-ing eye for me, says irate Hil” trumpets Google news on top of 183 stories in various newspapers about Karl Rove’s comments in a recent BushCo book.
Typical of the stories…in so-called left AND right-wing papers…is this one in the NY Times.

ALBANY, Feb. 27 — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton took a swipe at the White House on Monday, saying that Karl Rove, the president’s political adviser, “spends a lot of time obsessing about me.”
Mrs. Clinton’s comments came during an interview with an Albany radio station, after she was asked about a new book that quotes Mr. Rove as saying she is certain to be the Democratic presidential candidate in 2008.
“I don’t know where he gets his information from,” Mrs. Clinton said of Mr. Rove during the interview on WROW-AM. “If I were thinking about this, I’d say, ‘Why are they spending so much time talking about me?’ “
In “Strategery,” a book released on Monday by Bill Sammon, a White House reporter for The Washington Examiner, Mr. Rove is quoted as calling Mrs. Clinton “the dominant player on their side of the slate.”
The Ratpubs have mounted some sort of attempt at a rejoinder, but she threw a fastball right by them.
Please note the fine shades of meaning in this statement.
The use of the word “obsessing”.
Please…picture Karl.
SMACK!!!
Gotcha.
“If I were thinking about this, I’d say, ‘Why are they spending so much time talking about me?’ “
As if she is NOT thinking about this. As if this fight means little or nothing to her.
We all may have quarrels with her tactics, but you must admit…she is without a doubt the best mainstream politician that the Dems have.
By far.
She is a political artist.
Pragmatism defined.
She doesn’t NEED no Karl Rove.
She’s her OWN brain.
And more power to her. (Which you can be sure she is going to get.)
Remember the joke that was in vogue when Bill was first elected President?
————————————————————
Bill and Hillary are riding through DC in a motorcade.
Suddenly Hillary says to the driver “Pull over!!! Right NOW!!!”
He does so and the motorcade screeches to a panicked halt.
Hillary gets out of the limo, walks up to a homeless man sitting dejectedly on the curb, kneels down next to him and says a few words, reaches into her purse and gives him a card, and then gets back in the limo and says “OK, we can go now” and they start back up.
Bill turns to Hillary and says “What was THAT all about?” and she answers “Oh…I recognized that guy. I used to go out with him before I met you and I hated seeing him in that state, so I figured I’d see if there was something I could do to help him. He was an alright sorta guy…just down on his luck a little, I think.”
Bill swelled up a little (as he did so well, so often…) and said “Hillary, I’ll bet you’re glad you married me instead of him. Now you’re married to the President of the United States!!!”
And Hillary patiently answered him.
“Bill…you still don’t understand, do you? If I had married him, he’d be the President of the United States.”

Yup.
AG
Regarding the inevitable anti-Hillary comments that will appear here.
Have you ever considered that she is so good at her game that she even has YOU fooled?
Yup.
Could be…
(I know. I’m a sucker for real talent, no matter HOW commercially it may be used.)
AG
AG,
I think you might be watching or listening to too much media hype. She is a figment.
NEWSTRIKE!!
Watching NO media hype.
NEWSTRIKE intact.
All I do is skim the web.
Layer of dust on my TV screen. Really.
No newspapers in the house when I really need them…to soak up a spill, which is all they are good for unless you have a fireplace.
Car radio only when bored to near insensibility or need traffic reports.
What I am WATCHING…and after all, I do live in NY State…is Senator Hillary Clinton rounding up them Democratic dogies like she is a whole pack of border collies.
And catching more than a few Ratpubs as well.
Plus the uncommitteds.
Especially the female uncommitteds.
Possibly the largest unpolled and unpollable vote in America.
You know…it’s still the 1950s throughout great swaths of rural and working class white America. The woman votes like the man tells her to. And as regressive as that is, you KNOW that most of those families are Ratpubs.
However…in the darkness of the voting booth…I believe that a light is going to switch on for an instant in many of those women’s beaten-down brains.
“Oh YA, honey. I voted for McCain. Just like we talked about.”
Riiiight…
You say that Hillary Clinton is “a figment”?
I beg to differ.
She is real, and she has weight.
HEAVY weight.
She has been on the winning side since she was part of the Watergate team.
She’s a pro.
She saw which way the tide was running in 2004 and got up on the beach, out of the undertow.
And right or wrong…now she is in for the LONG swim. She is going to be the Democratic nominee in ’08 barring serious blunders or acts of God. And judging by her track record and her exquisitely finely controlled presentation of herself as “the sane alternative”, ain’t gonna BE any blunders. Because she is the pro in the race.
She’s already got it in the bag.
Bet on it.
Is she MY choice?
No.
I think Howard Dean would be a great President. But then…I think everyone ought to listen to Charlie Parker and John Coltrane with their morning Wheaties, too, so what do I know? Maybe the system as it stands really DOES “work” (I mean…we’re still here, right?), and he is too unstable, TOO idealistic.
All I’m doing is calling it like I see it.
John McCain vs. Hillary Clinton in ’08 barring the unforeseen…sickness, a coup d’etat, etc…and Clinton in a narrow (and largely female-driven) majority.
And then?
And then…we shall see just how slick she REALLY is.
Later…
AG
mccain will clobber clinton
I don’t think so.
His face looks…diseased.
Really.
Remember…we are in the image game, here.
Under the stress of a long campaign and the probing lens of the cameras…I think that he would fall apart. The many truly ROTTEN compromises that he has made…it is a given that he is a dishonorable man or he would not be able to stomach the Bush camp even for the reward of the Presidency…would come out. Unlike Butchie Boy, he is actually intelligent enough and sane enough to have a conscience. And that is a VERY bad thing to have and simultaneously be a high-level Ratpub these days.
Hillary by a small majority.
That’s MY bet.

Great diary by the way.
So many mind games, so little time.
“So many mind games, so little time.”
I agree.
But, as Churchill said about old age, “The alternative is totally unacceptable.”
If SOMEONE doesn’t play these mind games while there still IS a little time left…we are ALL dead.
She’s been picked, it looks like.
It’s her gig.
For better or for worse.
AG
She came across well in the intelligence hearing on several issues. She should get a few points for that.
Hey, I just know that Rove does obsess about Hillary and it has nothing to do with politics. Just look at the little gremlin.
That’s what’s so great about Clinton’s use of the word “obsess.” Every time you think about some dweeb spankin’ the monkey in the closest so his mom won’t find out (now I admit none of us think about that very often, but give me some license here), the dweeb’s face looks just like Karl Rove.
Give Clinton a break. She’s a politician. Why do we hold her to a higher standard than all other politicians? Politicians by definition are slaves to ambition. How full of oneself does one have to be to even think about being President? So the pool to pick from is already full of self selected, ambitious borderline hubris-infected people. Our job is to determine if their ambition will result in policies that our good for us. Obviously, we suck at it. (However I will believe to my last breath that Bush stole both elections that installed him as President so maybe we just suck at it a little less).
Be all that as it may, I won’t vote for her in the Democratic primary but if she is the nominee she’ll be better than any of the nazis on the Republican ticket.
Unless we want to continue our wandering in the wilderness, I do believe, much as I dislike, we should listen to Karl.
Imo, as a national candidate, Hillary is over-rated as a politician and is a polarizing figure. But she has amassed more money than she needs for the NY campaign that’ll allow her to throw the unspent funds into the pot for ’08. Last I read, she’d raised $130 million? and, recently she’s retained James Carville & Co.
The Telegraph, (UK) has Karl saying she’ll be the Democratic nominee in ’08.
Now if some events do play out, like the big I, we may just have a different landscape. BUT,
If Dems are wise and really, really want to recapture the WH, one of the best ticket is Gov. Warner-Feingold with a platform that includes:
-Health-care single payer makes Americans competitive, keeping jobs at home.
-Time to disinfect the Hill and rid the repubrats
-Iraq, bring home the troops.
-national security and Bush’s approved ports deal, (the other side never really walked the talk. Coast Guard requested $5.4 billion over 10 years-a sum equivalent to 2 weeks spending spree in Iraq; but Bush asked for only $46 million, Congress gave $175 million).
Americans will see a Bush>Clinton>Bush>Clinton, again! as reminding them to turn away from dynasties. Spare us the nightmare.
Unless we want to continue our wandering in the wilderness, I do believe, much as I dislike, we should listen to Karl.
I gotta dissent from that view. KR does not have our best interests at heart. I don’t know if Hillary is the best choice. But I know KR is screwing with our heads.
perhaps there’s something to learn from those with whom we most disagree. Every now and again if we listen closely, there’s a nugget or two from the opposition that’s helpful.
there’s little to learn if we’re always having a discussion among ourselves- all nodding in agreement. We can and do learn from our enemies. It’s said, keep your friends close, your enemies closer.
Imo, Hillary is being promoted for the presidency with little thought of where she stands on issues-the larger question being how will she be accepted nationally? It’s like knowing your horse is lame, weighted down with a pulmonary condition, and you still choose to put her in the race.
I consider myself a ‘yellow-dog dem’ but not with Hillary on the ticket. I couldn’t even hold my nose. She may be ‘brighter than Bill’ but that’s not enough. Yea, I know some are thinking vote Hillary, get Bill. That’s gibberish.
On the war, she outhawk the hawks
On free speech, she does not recognize. Change the Constitution to forbid flag-burning; this after the SC ruled it’s freedoom of speech.
On governance, it’s for the corporations and by the corporations. Hug Wal-Mart, the people who brought us the high cost of everyday low prices – devastating to samll town America.
Principled? No.
let’s leave it there
