Shows they have little effect on abortion rates: NYT
For all the passions they generate, laws that require minors to notify their parents or get permission to have an abortion do not appear to have produced the sharp drop in teenage abortion rates that some advocates hoped for, an analysis by The New York Times shows.
The analysis, which looked at six states that introduced parental involvement laws in the last decade and is believed to be the first study to include data from years after 1999, found instead a scattering of divergent trends…
…But some workers and doctors at abortion clinics said that the laws had little connection with the real lives of most teenagers, and that they more often saw parents pressing their daughters to have abortions than trying to stop them. And many teenagers say they never considered hiding their pregnancies or abortion plans from their mothers.
Whoops, looks like that one’s backfiring on the anti-choicers…

An overwhelming majority of the public believe fighting between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in Iraq will lead to civil war and half say the U.S. should begin withdrawing its forces from that violence-torn country, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The survey found that 80 percent believed that recent sectarian violence made civil war in Iraq likely, and more than a third said such a conflict was “very likely” to occur. Expectations for an all-out sectarian war in Iraq extended beyond party lines. More than seven in 10 Republicans and eight in 10 Democrats and political independents believe civil war was likely.
Guess he thinks that the new makeup of the supreme court will come up with a different answer than they did in 1998 for the law passed under Clinton when
the Supreme Court declared the law unconstitutional because it violated the principle that Congress, and not the executive branch, holds the power of the purse.
While most of the world eagerly awaited, and will be satisfied with, the fashion reviews from that center of cosmpolitan dressing, kansas city, those in the know are waiting for the complete fashion run down from our own resident fashion critic BooMan.
The failure to find much pink among the fashion choices does not bode well for the starlets hoping to make his best dressed list.
I’d like to take Reese Witherspoon’s dress and put it on a woman about 20 lbs. heavier. Then we’d have a winner.
Salma Hayek was a knockout in her blue dress.
But most women didn’t even try. You can’t win in a black dress. I mean, you can look fantastic in black, but you’d look even more fantastic in something else. Next year, no black.
Queen Latifay consistently proves that weight can be carried as long as you have the confidence and attitude to go with it. And Reese could probably go 40 lbs heavier and look better with every pound.
the double strap thng was a bit wide for her height, but I didn’t have a problem with it. Great color for her, good lines.
I thought Felicity Huffman had too much plunge for her height, and I was surprised at how nice JLo looked in that green, not a color I would have guessed she could wear, but she looked better than I have ever seen her.
Just in case you had any doubts about the attitude of South Dakota legislators toward women, this story from PBS’ News Hour should remove all doubt. Just like the Italian court, SD legislator Bill Napoli tells women that rape only matters for virgins (and makes us wonder about his sexual fantasies).
FRED DE SAM LAZARO: Napoli says most abortions are performed for what he calls “convenience.” He insists that exceptions can be made for rape or incest under the provision that protects the mother’s life. I asked him for a scenario in which an exception may be invoked.
BILL NAPOLI: A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life.
I’m sure in his best of all possible worlds by the time they finally decide she can have an abortion, the woman has gone insane and can be locked away thus allowing them to make sure she has the baby and that it can go to some lovely, deserving Christian family while she is drugged into a perfect stepford state.
then we also go back to stones. NO more guns and bombs and shit……..from here on out our deadliest weapon gets to be a stone! At least it gives the little kids a fighting chance as they can run faster than the rest of us!
Scientists from the European Space Agency have said that satellite measurements of water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean indicate that a La Nina is beginning. A La Nina is the opposite of an El Nino, and like an El Nino it has effects that will ripple throughout the weather around the world for the next several months. Among the anticipated effects of a La Nina event are a stronger than usual hurricane season in the North Atlantic. Hmmm.
The U.S. Geological Survey has released a report describing the occurrence of pesticides in streams and ground water during 1992-2001. The report concludes that pesticides are typically present throughout the year in most streams in urban and agricultural areas of the Nation, but are less common in ground water.
An archaeologist at the University of Liverpool is examining over 1,000 Roman silver coins from museums around the world in order to establish their true silver content. Silver coins formed the backbone of currency in the Roman Empire. Roman emperors manipulated the silver content of the coins to solve short-term financial problems frequently caused by government overspending. For the most part, this manipulation involved the reduction of the silver content of the coinage in conjunction with a drop in weight. (Nice photo of a Roman silver coin at the link)
World Food Program (WFP) chief James Morris on Sunday warned of large scale deaths in Kenya if donors delay the support in the delivery of food to some 3.5 million people facing a threat of starvation due to the ongoing drought in East Africa.
Japan has netted more Southern Bluefin Tuna than allowed by international agreements, prompting the world’s largest tuna-consuming nation to tighten controls on its fishing industry, the farm ministry said Thursday. The tuna are protected under guidelines laid down by an international commission after years of heavy fishing, with the worldwide catch limited to 14,080 tons.
Omega-3 fatty acids, such as are found in fish, are not only good for your heart, they’re also good for your mood! Researchers found that individuals who had lower blood levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids were more likely to report mild or moderate symptoms of depression, a more negative outlook and be more impulsive. Conversely, those with higher blood levels of omega-3s were found to be more agreeable.
Officials assert that Katrina highlighted chemical problems and health issues that New Orleans had lived with for decades. But skeptics say this glosses over complications caused by the storm. More details here.
Yesterday’s Ottawa Citizen reported that “Davis Baltz is a toxic waste site, according to a 2003 investigation that unearthed 15 dioxins and furans, 41 PCBs, four organochlorine pesticides, 33 volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, lead, mercury and phthalates. Problem is Davis Baltz is not a place, he is a person.” And he’s typical of the rest of us in terms of the body burden of industrial chemicals he’s contaminated with. The EU proposes action on this issue, while the chemical industry says no harm has been proven and the costs will be horrendous…
…But meanwhile, the Christian Science Monitor reports that a new generation of industry and academic scientists are working to find natural, nontoxic alternatives to petroleum for consumer products.
Technical article of note: A genetic analysis reveals a recent and dramatic decline of orangutan populations in Malaysia, and demonstrates that genetic data can quantify the effects of recent anthropogenic changes on endangered species. Somewhat less technical summary here.
Dark energy, the mysterious stuff invoked to explain why the expansion of the universe is accelerating, could have a simple explanation. The energy may be coming from neutrinos that were created in copious quantities just after the big bang. Unfortunately, the New Scientist layman’s explanation is behind a subscriber firewall. Fortunately, I subscribe. Unfortunately, I don’t have the information I need to get in here with me at work. Fortunately, I was able to find a free version of the same information. Unfortunately, it may be heavy going. But check it out for yourself: link. Or you might find something of interest here – more to explore than I have time for today!

The man has spoken.
You heard it ladies. No black.
And I guess we can all go 20 pds heavier — or maybe that was just Reese? Probably just Reese.
Queen Latifay consistently proves that weight can be carried as long as you have the confidence and attitude to go with it. And Reese could probably go 40 lbs heavier and look better with every pound.
Did I mention I love you?
and she is unfailingly elegant without an ounce of pretension or self-consciousness.
I didn’t like Reese’s dress at first but it grew on me, and by the end of the night I admired it. 1955 Dior, she said. It is a good color for her.
the double strap thng was a bit wide for her height, but I didn’t have a problem with it. Great color for her, good lines.

i missed your fashion sense in the threads last night, but I am happy that you and Madame had a nice evening together sans keyboard.
delightfully appalled by so many of the gowns. It may take us a while to get over Charlise Theron’s decision to forsake couture for architecture.
That thing on her shoulder was horrendous! The nicest thing I can say about it was that at least it matched the rest of her dress.
beautiful and radiant, but that gigantic bow was all I could see!
I thought it was an annex.
I thought it was in honor of Tippi Hedron. Looked more like a big crow was glowering there.
I agree she looked elegant. She seems to have finally learned that you don’t have to be oozing out of your dress to look feminine.

What the fuuuuuuuuuuck?
I can’t believe it. I’m not even going to get started on that comment. The ranting might never stop.
This is just evil. It’s based on a woman’s value to men. If she’s a virgin her value is much higher, therefore the crime is greater.
not just any old virgin — a religious virgin who was saving herself for marriage.
imagine the burden of proof on this
You’d have to prove:
6 she was saving herself for marriage (I guess you have to prove intent on this one).
did I miss anything?

Maybe this is the next step?
It scares me that so many people take the bible literally, and the numbers seem to be growing.
Ah, the good old days…when if a man wanted to make a woman his wife he could just rape her and give her father 50 shekels.
Whatever Rabbi came up with that formulation was really grasping at straws.
