The CIA warned Bush prior to war that regime change would not eliminate the threat of WMDs in Iraq. Rather, Iraq would continue to look for WMDs within the next 5-10 years because it is located in a “dangerous neighborhood.” The CIA further warned Bush that a new Iraqi government would “likely want the very weapons Hussein was (wrongly) suspected of hiding, including nuclear weapons.”
So, Bush argued that Iraq was an imminent threat because it had WMDs so the US had to eliminate that threat by going to war to find and destroy the WMDs. But, at the time that Bush was making these statements, even if he had believed that Iraq had WMDs, Bush knew that finding and destroying any such WMDs would not eliminate the threat of Iraq having WMDs. And, now with civil war and religious extremists dominating the new Iraqi government, the world should be safer that we “fought the terrorists over there” because now we can just sit and wait for them to acquire WMDs.
So, what’s the new game plan? The US will not have to wait for neocons to drudge up fabricated claims of WMDs because the new grounds for preemptive war is the fact that a country may soon acquire “technological capability to build a bomb.”
Britain now claims that Iran may acquire the “technological capability to build a bomb by the end of the year” and so Britain now will back Bush’s efforts to impose a 30-day deadline on Iran to comply with international demands:
“A senior Foreign Office official said that while it could take Iran several years to build a serviceable nuclear weapon, it might gain the technical knowhow within months. “By the end of the year is a … realistic period,” said the official. “It would be really damaging to regional security if Iran even acquired the technology to enable it to develop a nuclear weapon.”
Until now, European diplomats have referred to a period of five to 10 years during which Iran might potentially build a bomb, while conceding that hard evidence is lacking. By publicly focusing on the level of Iran’s technical capabilities, Britain may have shortened the timeframe for a peaceful resolution of the crisis.”
So, who is next, and how many cycles of war will there be?
