Crossposted from Migra Matters and my humble blog
I do these types of posts periodically to give everyone a feel of what the media coverage is like here in the Southwest U.S. regarding immigration. Thanks to Duke1676 for starting the Migra Matters Blog and assembling a great group of progressive voices to balance out the debate on this contentious issue.
Here’s what is going on here en la tierra frontera:
The MinuteMan Militia are preparing their return to the borderlands in two weeks. They’re also taking credit for the national debate currently raging on immigration reform.
Too many of them, in fact.
continued below the fold…
Meanwhile human beings are still dying, and in some cases, getting assaulted by bandits.
The increases reflect competition between smugglers pressured by U.S. Border Patrol crackdowns and bandits eager to take advantage of easy targets, officials say.
J.D. Hayworth (Wingnut-AZ5), who deserves permanent retirement this fall, is sending out anti-immigrant literature paid for with taxpayer money. Follow the link to view the mailing, and if you have a hard copy, AZ Congress Watch is looking for additional scans.
On the Dem-side, Blog for Arizona has an interview posted with Jeff Latas, who is one of several candidates for AZ’s Congressional District 8. With Republican Jim Kolbe’s retirement announcement, we have a good shot at picking up that seat (as long as the Democratic Primary doesn’t produce any casualties). Here’s part of the section where Jeff talks about immigration.
The immigrants generally are helping our society out and benefiting us greatly. I think much of the negative rhetoric is used to conceal that simple fact. A lot of it might be hate-based and prejudiceÂ… IÂ’m not willing to say that someone like Randy Graf is a bigot, but there are definitely people who are bigots who are attracted to this issue.
Heh.
Finally, the Tucson Citizen has a two-page profile up regarding a unique photography project underway that is trying to capture the human aspect of two opposing sides of the debate: immigrants and the Minutemen. They are handing out disposable cameras to various groups, along with a return envelope, and documenting the response.
“Our goal was to show the journey without it being tainted by our own perspective and by just our presence there.”
You guys are doing great work on this. I love the idea of the collaborative photography project & will check it out later this afternoon.
Thanks too, for looking at my prison profits diary yesterday. Though it’s not ‘news,’ I’ve no doubt that there are investors poised today to make a killing on these repressive laws & new detention centers.
is definitely “news”, especially as it relates to the broken justice system of this country. The data on percentages of incarcerated minorities is depressing at best (as an example). Thx for reading Arcturus, the photo project is powerful stuff. Paz
Wonder why cuban illegal inmigrants are not labeled as such. Oh right they are p0olitical refugees, although they are not persecuted. But those central americans that were persecuted in the 80’s were sent back to their countries so they could be killed.
Guess my signature says it all.
abound, cruz. It’s symptomatic of a broken system. I’m concerned with immigration reform being written under a cloud of bigotry being created by assholes like Tancreado, Sensenbrenner and others. Whenever we point it out, there’s a “oh no you didn’t!” reaction from the right, but the truth is an ugly thing.
Damm right Manny!!! That is why we should start conditioning all of these big corporations that if they want to do buisness south of the border to allowing our peope to come north.
They go south so they can get cheap labour. They pay us missery wages. When we come north to improve our lives, they pay us bellow minimum wages. If this government did impose that those who hire inmigrants to pay us similar wages as the gringos, there would be no question: they wouldn’t allow us to come here.
However, now Mexicans have an advantage: the billions of barrels of oil recently discovered there could be used to allow them to come here to work.
Canging of subject, social movements in Argentina have presented a motion to the Congress there to nulify 45 billion dollars because there were 477 illegal transactions during the dictatorship of 76-83. I guess most of it is from the World Bank (the article will come out tomorrow)
Let see how they like them apples 🙂
entry posted over at Migra Matters and ePluribus Media regarding the photo project with a couple of sample pics.
