v for vindicated

we saw ‘v for vendetta’ yesterday, and were pleased with the film.

without giving much away, we will say that, for a comic-book movie, it had a breadth and depth, a complexity and nuance, that we weren’t expecting.
tho a little longish (the third act could be trimmed, and spoiler alert!!! there seemed to be no logical plot reason for the finale fireworks), it was nonetheless a provacative, engaging and visually-sumptuous treat.

considering that the source material is over 20 years old, the plot trappings were eerily relevant to today’s political clime.

exquisite performances by natalie baldman, hugo “agent smith” weaving, stephen “crying game” rea and the brilliant john hurt…plus a surprise (to us) appearance by the guy from “a bit of fry and laurie,” the one who isn’t dr. house.

all in all, any movie that quotes both goethe and benny hill, is tops in our book.

we suggest everyone who hasn’t seen it, go this weekend, as the second weekend receipts of a movie sets the tone for the trend (up/down/level). even if you have seen it, and want to see something else, go to a multiplex, buy a ticket for “v for vendetta,” and sneak into that movie about amanda byrnes masquerading as a boy at denzel washington’s behest to infiltrate a bank robber gang: “she’s the inside man.”
