[Crossed at Kos http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/3/26/192931/225]
Every Friday, starting at Pioneer Square in Portland, OR – a group of people from Portland Peaceful Response Coalition, Portland’s No War Drum Corp, Veteran’s for Peace Chapter 72 and CodePink Portland march in a 5 square block while holding signs, chanting against this war, all to the beautiful sound of No War Drum Corp. Drums… there’s something so pure, so strong about them.
Glimpses from the rally. It’s so hard to capture on film what your heart feels.
This time my family came along. Danni and Wesley made and decorated their own drums. Wesley even took off his most treasured, must-have with him always item – his CD player – and tuned in.
There were tons of cars honking, people flashing us the peace sign and thumbs up. People sitting down in diners smiled at us and waved at the kids.
Someone brought their axe
(in this case, not a guitar)
“Teach your children well.”
They ARE our National Treasures.
Stop the killing!
Thanks Janet, you’re showing your kids by your own example that actions always speak louder than words(not that words aren’t important) and they will grow up to be national treasures..not that they aren’t already.
I think it helps them feel empowered.
I was worried this might be hard for Wesley, being autistic and having the loud drums and cars honking… but he did very well. It wasn’t untill we got back on the train that he began to obsess about possibly missing his tv show. We had puhhhlenty of time to get home (2hrs lead)
It’s so important for our kids to feel that they too have a voice. I never felt I did about much growing up.
I hope next Friday there are more people. I’ll report back.
Gave you some love at the orange place. What a great thing you’re doing, showing those kids how to change the world.
Thanks Second Nature
For some reason, I can’t see the final 3 photos. Dial Up is Pure Hell.
Great pics Janet. I wish we could hear the drums π
I rec’d you over at Orange.

I’m having some tech probs I think with my photos … guh
You, who are on the road must have a code that you can live by.
And so become yourself because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well, their father’s hell did slowly go by,
and feed them on your dreams, the one they picks, the one you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
so just look at them and sigh and know they love you.
And you (can you hear?), of the tender years (do you care?)
can’t know the fears (can’t you see we) that your elders grew by (must be free to),
and so please help them (teach your children) with your youth (to believe),
they seek the truth (make a world that) before they can die (we can live in).
Teach your parents well, their children’s hell will slowly go by,
and feed them on your dreams, the one they picks, the one you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
so just look at them and sigh and know they love you.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
