Last Saturday, I had the chance to see an awesome band, The Texas Chainsaw Horns, play at Caroline’s in Winchester, Va.
I also got the chance to meet some rocking kossacks and tribbers: blondemoment, teacherken, his wife, leaves on the current, Dem20004, and his friend Lisa (not a registered kossack, but a reader), and RenaRF.
RenaRF is one of the two singers in the band. I met her last year at a meetup I organized in Harpers Ferry. She was one of about 35 people to attend it.
teacherken and his wife had arrived first and procured us a table directly in front of the stage.
blondemoment, who turns out is someone I’ve known offline for years — small world — but had only crossed paths once or twice on DailyKos, and I shared a plate of appetizers and RenaRF came over and hung out with us while adding more glitter and makeup. She was wearing a low cut dress with her hair up high.
Except for Cheers & Jeers, you wouldn’t know what a wild and fun woman she is from her serious diaries.
But man, can she rock out.
We chatted politics for a while — surprise — and then she and the band went on the stage to perform.
She and the drummer and other band members exchanged banter and they seemed really loose.
But when they began to play, the band, particularly the horns, put together an incredibly tight, funky sound.
If I told you where the horns play during their day jobs — and I’m not sure I should — it would add credibly and understanding to what I am about to tell you: they were the best horn section I’ve ever heard perform. And I’ve seen a wide-range of musical performers in concert over the years.
Rena’s got a voice as smooth as whiskey and the male singer sounds like he was born to perform in roadhouses and blues bars.
It was a lot of fun. And for quite a few hours I don’t think any of us thought of politics.
Good companionship, fantastic music, that’s my happy story for tonight. Your story can be anything you want to share.
