I had a great day actually. The bod’s a little beat, but then that was my intention. I’m cutting some firewood for next winter and getting some outdoor physical exercise too.
We’ll see how stiff things are in the morning (good thing SN went to bed…) anyway, the day was sunny and I managed to stay out of the roaring wind.
We had sleet and snow last night at 2AM, after having 70 degrees earlier at 6PM. Typical crazy ND spring wx.
Best find so far this trip is some lichens, but posting will have to wait until return to the city. No USB connection on this computer, and even if I had one it would be too slow to upload.
And the poetry is all in wordperfect and the files come up looking pretty strange font wise, so since I’ve been up since 2AM, but a few FM naps mixed in during rest between cutting firewood, what was it I was saying… anyway, poetry will have to wait until tomorrow at the earliest.
No rush — I didn’t mean for you to put them up tonight, just that you’ll be able to post some now that you’ve found them again. Don’t work too hard tomorrow … 🙂
good advice, I’ll try not to. It’s always a challenge to determine how hard to go at it. Seems like I can accomplish quite a lot if I mix some breaks into the scheme.
So… guess I’ll stay on the newly-overturned-leaf schedule and see you guys tomorrow morning.
I’d hate to see you end up in Texas against your will! Good night, my friend, and looking forward to more lichens and other goodies you may find out there!
Sorry to hear about snow and sleet last night… we may get frost tomorrow night, which means I’ll be covering the Lantanas we just planted yesterday!
Following up on Booman’s open thread earlier today, here are my blogstops everyday:
-Daily Kos
-MyDD
-Booman Tribune
-Eschaton
-Steve Gilliard’s News Blog
I used to frequent The Left Coaster, Hullaballoo and Rude Pundit regularly, but there’s only so much time in a day. Those sites I visit occasionally, but not as much as I used to. Whenever I have a lot of time, I sometimes visit Americablog, Firedoglake, and Billmon.
I probably won’t visit Swords Crossed due to the lack of threads and my general dislike for discussion with Armando based on experience at dKos. Another blog I make a point not to visit is My Left Wing. The MSOC worship is sickening at this point, and she herself has planted her ego at far too high a level.
The sword fighters now have threaded comments, as of late this afternoon. They are a little hard to follow, but they exist. I was actually very impressed with their first day. We need more of this type of interaction with people of opposite views. Preaching to our own choir only gets us so far. We need to hear what the other choirs are singing.
True. That being said, once I read David Brock’s ‘The Republican Noise Machine’, I sort of lost all respect for the conservative movement, whether it be the modern movement or the traditional one. He illustrated that both are driven by money and are intellectually bankrupt.
I don’t think respect has anything to do with it. It’s always a good exercise to force yourself to listen to your opponent. And having a debate in controlled circumstances is good practice for uncontrolled encounters in life.
Although I think many of their followers will be disappointed because there will never be a winner of any argument. But that’s not the point..
This is sort of an RSS aggregator, but a very cool one. Mine is divided up into several pages, with podcasts on one, news on another, political stuff on another, etc. Using the sites’ RSS feeds, I can keep track of the headlines and see if there’s anything worth reading on the various sites. Currently I use it to follow BT, Kos, Crooks & Liars, FDL, My Left Wing, Raw Story and a couple others. Most sites these days have RSS feeds, so you can keep track of them fairly easy without having to read through a bunch of stories you don’t care about.
That’s about the limit of how many blogs I can keep track of, though. I don’t have that much time.
The Braves have some things to figure out, but I’m more confident than I was 2 weeks ago that they’re going to pull it together and win the division again.
The NL Central is suddenly the toughest division in baseball. What’s up with that?
Yeah, I didn’t want to miss the fun folks tonight, plus my energy level is waning fast, so I thought I’d better high tail it over here before I end up napping again (as I did in the chair earlier!). I think Family Man’s lessons are taking hold too well… plus that fresh spring air really zaps me this time of year. How ya doing dada? Did you see my mystery plant late last night?
These just keep coming up! Finally found the last of them to emerge today, though I’m bummed that a couple of them got so top heavy they fell over 🙁
Oh, and the Dracunculus looks pretty much the same today, but put on about another inch or so… I’ll take more pics of it tomorrow after work to keep you posted. I’m going to hunt down THE BOOK this week!
Actually they’re more of a fuschia red bordering on pink… the variety is called Jan Bos but they’re lovely and smell soooo good.
Yes, I did read that, and can’t tell you yet at this point… but I did read a bit more about the plant today in a resource, and it said that the flower smells very unpleasant for the first few days. We’ll let you know when we find out. LOL The resource also said that they can top out at about 3 feet when mature! Wow, we didn’t realize that! Did you go to that link to see the mature bloom?
We can call it that … fuschia red bordering on pink … 😉 j/k.
That’s what I read too — smell is funky … From The Book:
Different lily arum species have different smells. One arum will remind you of apples, another of urine. One attracts carrior beetles and smells vile. Roger Seymour says it smells like a dead cat.
3 feet! That’s humongous — and imagine it gets hot! That is going to be some very interesting plant, what with the suggestive shape, the size, the heat, the smell … I can’t wait for it to grow lol! 🙂
We mulched it really well here and will continue to do so, just to make sure… and I snuck off over to the site to get the mature flower pic to show off, and freak people out… here it is revealed!
I did go an look it up after reading about in The Book b/c it sounded so intriguing… I have to admit that this is one exciting plant — trumps anything pink I’d say. 😉
we said, gotta have this! I can’t wait for the people who come by regularly to see what’s blooming around here think of it when it does its thing. We’re already known for being somewhat eccentric in our gardening choices, but this one should blow the roof off of that! hehe. My only fear is that some kid or joker will want to pick it… but we’ll deal with it when the time comes. Hopefully by then we’ll have the rock border up that part of the sidewalk to discourage any of that stuff.
Actually, this is planted not far from our dining room windows… guess we should have done our research first! hehe Bedroom is upstairs and far from where it’s planted, fortunately!
As for the nasty neighbors, they’re kitty corner to us, so they wouldn’t get any smell unless the wind was just right. Pity.
Moo Moo Cow and Jackass Jim were yapping about our tulips yesterday to our other neighbor (who we like and who gave us the boulders) while I was toiling in the big bed digging up weeds and such and I heard her say… “OOOH I’ll just go over there and cut a bouquet!” As I said out loud you do that, bitch and I’m calling the cops! She’s such an annoying mooch… always wants to come over and dig up our stuff for her pathetic garden when we’re not around… I told her last year that was NOT to be done and there would be consequences if she did. I’m not very nice to them anymore after we used to give them lots of stuff they planted in the grass and then had the nerve to complain that the starts never made it. But other than them, we love the rest of our immediate neighbors! In fact yesterday we gave away several bleeding hearts to people who will give them good homes.
I can’t imagine going into someone’s garden and digging &or cutting stuff out! That’s crazy!
I’ve got a question for you — when you’re out there taking pix of flowers do you ever feel odd? Speaking from my own situaion, I’m pretty sure my neighbours all think I’m wacked — I’m out there w
I don’t usually feel all that strange, since our dear neighbor lady behind us comes over to take pics of our stuff all the time, and the others who know me know I document things for my website. Now, when I’m out near dark and taking pics of the Sphinx Moths, I’ve had some people wonder what the hell I’m doing out there flashing at flowers in the near dark… LOL. Fortunately, most of our immediate neighbors love what we have done with the place and are very supportive of our efforts. They know we’re “weird” by most standards, but they don’t complain, since it makes the block so much more colorful. We’re wholly responsible for inciting the lawyers across the street into greening up their space as well… kind of a friendly competition. He gave us boulders, we planted for him and consult regularly now and take his money to buy him plants, so he’s happy with us. Really nice folks they are for lawyers… hehe.
yes — these are the The Book too — used to think that elephants pollinated the flowers b/c they would drink water collected in the base and rubbing their heads, and spreading pollen …
It also says,
We don’t want to smell like the largest inflorescence in the world, the nine-foot-tall giant arum, mythically pollinated by elephants, which gives off a stench so revolting it has made men grow faint.
It resembles the rotting carcas of a bird, and its smell of decay draws blowflies which lay eggs w/in the flower’s “empty eye socket or an inviting anus.”
How is w/ transplanting — I’m thinking if it does get this bad maybe it’s worth slipping over in the dead of night to Moo Moo Cow and Jackass Jim’s and planting in their yard. LOL!
You’re probably going to be disappointed w/ the book seeing as how I keep putting out all the good bits. 🙂
Yup, dada, same family, I believe. The Titum Arum only blooms about once every 5 yrs or so and stinks to high heaven, so I’ve read. Sacred stench lily, I’ve heard. Amazing plants though, because they get absolutely gigantic when they do their thing.
I’m sure ours will be much more humble, but will keep all of you posted on the stench factor when that happens. Glad you saw it, my friend… I knew you’d appreciate the weird factor!
about one in a conservatory, I think in florida, that’s on schedule to bloom in june or july…guess they’re planning a big public viewing or some such. Not sure I’d want to go…:{)
There’s also one in the Univ. greenhouses in Madison, where I went to graduate school, and I saw it once but it was not in bloom at the time. Probably fortunate for me at the time, but it was an impressively weirdass plant to behold. They do seem to make the news when they bloom… can’t imagine why lol!
Night, MaryB… glad I got to shout at ya just a little bit. Are you still reading Lolita? I’m really sorry I missed that discussion the other day, as it’s been years since I read it. Love the Kubrick film of it though… such icy distancing and irony almost worthy of Flaubert. And hint for your book club… invoke Flaubert when discussing Nabokov… Vladimir owed him a big big debt of style-it-tude.
I’ll bring my Amigos Invisibles discs and my Juan Luis Guerra stuff to liven up the place. Maybe I’ll even whip up some salsa fresca for the occasion if you bring the chips and tacos. 🙂

Been sort of a lost day around here — what I called “grey days” when I was in the deepest parts of my depression periods. (“Grey nights” were when I’d sit up all night watching “World News Now” on ABC.)
I think it’s circumstantial, not medical, so I’ve been hesitant about looking at chemical assistance (medication) for it. I should at least get some sort of cognitive (“talk”) therapy, but it’s such a hassle — have to call our insurance provider, then they provide a couple of names from their “approved” list, then I have to figure out if they can provide what I need. PITA if you ask me…but better than no mental health coverage at all, I guess…
It’s been a rough week I think with that special anniversary … Take care of yourself — your health is important — including mental — and you shouldn’t put it off if there’s a possibility of finding someone to talk to about it that might help. Will be thinking of you. See you tomorrow … {{{{Cali}}}}
I know what you’re talking about… except I always referred to it as “watching the walls dissolve.” Meaning that I could sit in a chair and imagine the room around me just fading away… not pretty, I know, and I hope yours will pass soon. Not to go prescribing on you or anything like that, but if you’re not wanting to go the standard AD route… when I’ve had bouts of circumstantial depression, I’ve found that taking St. John’s Wort extract has helped pull me out of it … so something to consider, if you haven’t already. In fact, I could use getting myself back on that soon. But spring planting and the change of seasons has been helping me lately… anyway… take care, and don’t be afraid to let it out if you need to talk!
I just refilled the beernuts and kicked the jukebox – we should be all set for the night.
Ah, a fresh cafe! I love it. I’ll just spread my things out here. And have a bit of what you’re having.
Hi Katiebird! I haven’t had a chance to tell you yet that I think your “taking it live” with your blog is very exciting.
How’re things progressing w/ the live blog debut?
Hi Olivia, not much going on with it today. I’ve got 5 weeks, so I’m pacing myself.
and good night, kb.
Night to everybody else, too.
Andi and SN…er froggybottom. 😉
and the rest of you nincompoops too, whoever is still up.
And thanks to Indy-DOS-guru I was able to retrieve my WordPerfect files from back in the DOS days. Whooppeee!
Now to get them pasted into new word files… but I’ll probably do that later this week when I’m back in the city.
Don’t make me sic the curse of Sven and Arnie on ya, will you?
How’s it going up there NDD? Find any more fungi lately to photograph?
It’s not even midnight – lol. 😉
How’s it going? Any new arum developments? 🙂
I’m trying to get to bed earlier! Fat chance… decided to head in right after the Daily Show so I’d not be the near lone tulip man tonight. 🙂
See my post to ya below for arum comment.

Good to hear that you’ve got your files — now can we expect to read some of your poetry? You can post it along w/ your photos!
And the poetry is all in wordperfect and the files come up looking pretty strange font wise, so since I’ve been up since 2AM, but a few FM naps mixed in during rest between cutting firewood, what was it I was saying… anyway, poetry will have to wait until tomorrow at the earliest.

Ear plugs rec’d w/ chain saws…HEAR THAT?
but I bet you worked hard. You need to rest a little now 🙂
I think maybe I do, since I’d like to be up in time for a sunrise, incase it’s a good one, ’cause I need some new material.
How’s your Mozart concerts, do they run all summer?
I was going to ask if you’re watching, but … I guess not. 🙂
I don’t even have it on radio…jazz instead.
I’ll let you know what happens — intermission currently. 🙂 Are you listening to your station?
Listenening to KUVO…check their streaming…the 10 to midnight show is much edgier than their daytime programming.
I’m on KGNU…there’s a stream there too.
Goal by Liles. 🙂
Thanks for the links. I’ve listened to KGNU before, but the other looks good too! I’ll check ’em out.
and comin’ home…I’m a bit surprised they got both games down there, Dallas had their # during the RS.
Goodnight, Andi, sleep well.

Anybody want a beer?
You have to ask?
I thought I’d be polite.
I see that Albert hit another home run tonight. The Cards are looking tough.
It was a miracle! Encarnacion got a hit tonight.
Albert is off to an amazing start.
Sorry the Braves lost to Milwaukee tonight. But Andruw is off to a good start too, from what I’ve seen.
The Braves have some things to figure out, but I’m more confident than I was 2 weeks ago that they’re going to pull it together and win the division again.
The NL Central is suddenly the toughest division in baseball. What’s up with that?
Don’t know. But the season’s young, some of those teams will fall apart.
I’ll trade you some of these, for a big one of those!
How’s everyone doing tonight? Another week is upon us… grrrr…. and I’m still revising that freaking report!
Excellent…though I suspect I’m getting the better end of that deal 🙂
you’re early tonight. :{)
Slinking off now to find a nice pic for Olivia…
Beautiful colours!
Did you read my comment last night about your special plant — that certain parts of it actually get hot to the touch? Is this true?!
Growing zone ottawa — 5a I think.
We mulched it really well here and will continue to do so, just to make sure… and I snuck off over to the site to get the mature flower pic to show off, and freak people out… here it is revealed!
Had you seen it yet?
I did go an look it up after reading about in The Book b/c it sounded so intriguing… I have to admit that this is one exciting plant — trumps anything pink I’d say. 😉
we said, gotta have this! I can’t wait for the people who come by regularly to see what’s blooming around here think of it when it does its thing. We’re already known for being somewhat eccentric in our gardening choices, but this one should blow the roof off of that! hehe. My only fear is that some kid or joker will want to pick it… but we’ll deal with it when the time comes. Hopefully by then we’ll have the rock border up that part of the sidewalk to discourage any of that stuff.
but, when I read about how bad it could smell, I thought of those neighbours of yours … hehe … (bad olivia.)
But then, it could be next to your bedroom window or something … and that wouldn’t be good at all!
Ok, I’ll quit being evil and put a lid on it! 🙂
I can’t imagine going into someone’s garden and digging &or cutting stuff out! That’s crazy!
I’ve got a question for you — when you’re out there taking pix of flowers do you ever feel odd? Speaking from my own situaion, I’m pretty sure my neighbours all think I’m wacked — I’m out there w
my camera more than my secateurs etc. 🙂
I don’t usually feel all that strange, since our dear neighbor lady behind us comes over to take pics of our stuff all the time, and the others who know me know I document things for my website. … hmmm? Were you post you pix? 🙂
looks like one of these…or same family
amorphophallus rivieri Sacred Lily of India
Guess they smell reeaallllllly bad.
yes — these are the The Book too — used to think that elephants pollinated the flowers b/c they would drink water collected in the base and rubbing their heads, and spreading pollen …

Eeeeeewww.
when I read this bit: “its smell of decay draws blowflies which lay eggs w/in the flower’s “empty eye socket or an inviting anus.”
Lordy, I hope ours doesn’t even approach this! But we’re dyed in the wool freaks, so it would only be appropriate after all, LOL.
I MUST get that book soon!
Not sure I’d want to go…:{)

good night!
Always 🙂
How’ve you been lately, ManEe?
gearing up for a fiesta at my blogspace. I have a feeling it’s gonna happen when I’m dead asleep in the morning 🙁
I was under the impression that it was always a party at your blogspace 🙂
I’m finally hitting five digits on my sitemeter!!!
Awesome! That is great news, and well deserved.
Your average visit length kicks ass, btw. Definitely a testament to the quality of your posts about issues a lot of people care about.
I attribute the long visit length to Bud’s involvement in this project.
I’ll bring my Amigos Invisibles discs and my Juan Luis Guerra stuff to liven up the place. Maybe I’ll even whip up some salsa fresca for the occasion if you bring the chips and tacos. 🙂
for cheesecake and champagne? 🙂
and I’m happy! I’ll cede the cheesecake to the connoisseurs, since I rarely eat the sweet desserts. I’ll bring my own blue cheese hehe.
Hey Manny, I’m on board! Maybe if I get drunk enough I can avoid another horrendous week of work! Oh, but I get paid on Friday… never mind!
How are you and Bud doing?
Paydays are a FSMsend.
and no worries, we practice seatbelt safety.
More anti-Bush/War music
Merle Haggard, for starters…when Merle does a protest song you know that middle america is gettin’ the picture.
cnn interview with Neil Young…lame-o interviewer, but Neil makes some good points.
Peace
to my ears (to over-use a poignant pun)
…Indy? 🙂
you wish 😉
I thought you were off being all wise and insightful on the frontpage.
Uh, right. I hate it when BooMan does that, frontpaging a diary I’ve already commented on, so that all the world can see my folly.
pffffft I was ready to spend my evening writing a code to attach my screenname to your comments since they’re pretty much exactly the way I would’ve responded.
I guess we’re in the same fools club then, eh? 🙂
IVG and Olivia were around a bit ago.
I’m good for about 30 min.
Wuzup?
I have 33 hits to go and I’m afraid it’s going to happen in the wee hours of the left coast morning and I’m gonna miss my own fiesta 🙁
Luckily I have something to go with my Jager
I wanna see it happen too — this is big milestone! (I’ll just go for a little trip right now … 😉
have one that’s all ready to go.
(despite the watermark on the picture, I actually got it from LiquorSnob.com. I don’t know if I’m pirating it or if they are, but hell, it’s all in the name of a party, right?
is that it’s cold and free. My favorite type of beverage 🙂 Thx E
you should be a couple closer, O and I just stopped by.
BTW, how do you imbed short links in haloscan?…the code I use here doesn’t seem to work
<a href="http://yourlinkhere.com">text you want displayed</a>
🙂
Yes. I’m sitting here cleaning out my file cabinet, shredding years’ worth of bank statements, bills, etc., being entertained by y’all. 🙂
you build a bonfire? That’s much more exciting. Although I can see the added benefit of shredding up papers to relieve stress.
Sure, a bonfire right in living room, lol. Honey, the only fires around here are in the hookah. 😉
which reminds, looks like we need another cafe. brb
Heading for bed, I guess…night, folks…
g’night Cali! Rest well.
keep your head up, my friend, you have a warm and strong heart. You’ll get through it. ((hugs again))
It’s been a rough week I think with that special anniversary … Take care of yourself — your health is important — including mental — and you shouldn’t put it off if there’s a possibility of finding someone to talk to about it that might help. Will be thinking of you. See you tomorrow … {{{{Cali}}}}
Hang in there Cali!
HOOKAH TIME, don’t forget your drinks as you float your way towards Indy’s bonfire.
