Just popped into the other cafe and here we are precipitating Happy Hour already! Is someone, um… um… a little bit antsy to get on the Orange Blossom Express? hehe
We all got together one day, and by “we” I refer to everybody on the East Coast, and decided to treat the rest of the country with scorn and contempt. You deserve it because we say you deserve it and we’re the deciders.
Or at least I thought that was the story, until I found out that New York, Boston and D.C. all got together and decided that Philadelphians mostly suck and should be disregarded at all costs. Decider no more. Oh the humanity! Well at least we’re not Baltimore.
JENNY JONES: And then you started reading people like Jean-François Lyotard and Jean Baudrillard — how did that change your feelings about your modernist heroes?
ALEX: I suddenly felt that they were, like, stifling and canonical.
JENNY JONES: Stifling and canonical? That is so sad, such a waste. How old were you when you first read Fredric Jameson?
ALEX: Nine, I think.
The AUDIENCE: gasps.
Beyond that I can’t produce a random 10, because, well, I’d rather not say. Why don’t you download all of the tunes I have here and put them in a random order and we’ll call that my random 10?

Load those up, pour the drinks and head on out to the boogie floor with these tunes… plus the ones I couldn’t remember by name, but only by group such as Los Amigos Invisibles…
They’re as random as they came outta my brain… Kind of like playing Exquisite Corpse… I thought of a theme and threw them together randomly … is that not random or am I devo?

Can’t Get enough of You — Barry White
Since I’m at work I had to shuffle manually on my ipod (i.e. put it on shuffle and then keep hitting next song) and it came up with a much more diverse group of songs than itunes does when I do the party shuffle feature. I have over 4000 songs, I can never figure out why it always picks the same basic groups.
Oooh, Barry White. I have memories of his music oozing through the house from my brother’s room when he was in his early 20’s and probably very very horny. My brother that is. And Barry White always sounded like he was trying to talk a lady into having sex right then and there anyway.
Mine keeps calling up the same song, but here’s the newest list of same songs. 🙂
Let’s Jam – The Four Tops
Jamaica Jerk Off – Elton John
Look Through Any Window – The Hollies
The Blacksmith / Black Smithereens – Planxty
Thunder and Lightnin’ – (Workin’ Band) -The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Two Solitudes – Level 42
Danny’s Song – Loggins & Messina
Simple Man – Lynyrd Skynyrd
Social Disease – Elton John
Stompin’ At The Savoy – Benny Goodman & His Orchestra
Brighten Your Night With My Day James Taylor
It takes me forever to actually listen to the words of songs — so I can go for years liking a song and then one day realize exactly what the words are and never listen to it again. Not this one, particularly. Just generally.
Mary I remember you saying that before. I’m the same way. I actually don’t think I know all the words to it, but always like the song. Not my favorite on the album though. Watching the River Run is the one I always liked.
Took me a second to look it up. The Cd’s name is James Taylor. It’s got one you might remember, Carolina In My Mind. I think it was produced around 68.
well, I kinda alway thought that miracles were supposed things people actually wanted to happen. So I was wondering about miracles that people don’t want to happen.
Well folks, I’m sneaking out of work a bit early today since I have to take it home with me this weekend anyway. So I’m gonna go enjoy the sunshine for a while. Hope to check back in later… hope you napped up today for a late night FM, hehe.
Yeah, and just last week I heard some DJ who really ought to know better say “That was Lynyrd Skynyrd, from his album . . . “
Twas ever thus. Dinah Shore apparently asked Pablo Cruise (also a band name) “Which one of you is Pablo?” Twice. And part of Blondie’s guerrilla marketing campaign included buttons and stickers proclaiming BLONDIE IS A BAND, apparently to try to educate those who thought Debby Harry was “Blondie.”
You could probably come up with examples all night . . .
Me too. My favorite memories of my mother is when she’d turn on big band music really loud and kind of dance around the house while she was cleaning or cooking dinner. Once she even danced with my dad. It was the only time I ever saw them touch.
My mom kept her jazz and big band 78s for a long time but somewhere in one of our moves they disappeared. A moment of silence while I think about Dinah Washington doing ‘The Man I Love’
I’m going to make my dad go through his 78’s and find me some unscratched ones. I inherited a hand crank victrola that was my great grandmother’s and it still plays. It’s in a nice piece of cabinetry so I’m pretty excited about it. I think it’s being hauled over to my house this weekend.
That’s cool! Are 78’s those really heavy records that you could break into a million pieces? My mom had a ton of those (literally) and I don’t know where they went. What a shame.
Yeah they are the heavy one-song records that break into lots and lots of pieces. Sharp pieces 🙂
I think it’s cool. My grandmother bought it for her mother (my great grandmother). So it has nice family history as well as being a nice piece of furniture.
Scotch & Chocolate–Nickel Creek
If I Laugh–Cat Stevens
Dear Mr. President–P!nk/Indigo Girls
I Need a Miracle–Grateful Dead
Funky Mountain Fogdown–Leftover Salmon
Only Love Can Break Your Heart–Neil Young
Our Town–Iris DeMent
Street Hassle–Lou Reed
Yulunga–Dead Can Dance
The Swimming Song–Loudon Wainwright III
Ever since watched the video of Pink singing Dear Mr. President, I’m disappointed with the version on her album with the Indigo Girls. I wish the single of the video was available (legally) somewhere. It’s thrilling.
I Love Onions – Susan Christie
Flowers are Red – Harry Chapin
Stormy – Classics IV
I Ain’t A-Marchin’ Anymore – Arlo Guthrie
Elenore – The Turtles
Sweet Talkin’ Woman – ELO
Year of the Cat – Al Stewart
Ice Machine in the Desert – Brave Combo
The Riddle Song – Pete Seeger
Blue Hawaii – Elvis Presley
I was several years out of high school when Year of the Cat was on the charts. There’s a bunch of music from that time that’s stuck with me, though — Steven Bishop’s “On and On,” Cliff Richards’ “Devil Woman,” and a whole bunch of songs from A New World Record and Out Of The Blue (ELO).
Must be time for my meds again. I have no idea what an Ashley-what’s-her-name entails. That’s probably a good thing.
On the other hand, you gotta admire Milli Vanilla. Remember the Crayola commercial that (I’m remembering here so I’m probably getting it wrong) showed a bunch of kids coloring, with a voiceover saying “Crayola will stop being the most popular crayon in the world . . . ” — and then they cut to a shot of Milli Vanilli and concluded ” when these guys learn how to sing.”
I’ve always given people props for allowing their foibles to be pointed up, and even participating. I’m thinking of some of the old SNL skits, like Paul Simon in the turkey suit singing “Still Crazy After All These Years,” or Joe Cocker singing a duet with Jim Belushi doing his Joe Cocker imitation, or Charlton Heston doing a 60-year-old shelf stocker with a weapons obsession. Now that’s comedy.
The Ashley Simpson thing was on SNL. The second song she was supposed to sing wasn’t the right one, so she stopped and started doing a jig. I guess everybody thought she was singing live.
Just popped into the other cafe and here we are precipitating Happy Hour already! Is someone, um… um… a little bit antsy to get on the Orange Blossom Express? hehe
Hey, it’s already 4:59 here on the east coast… 🙂
They’re mean to us humble middle coasters! Yeah! CG, that means you’re buying rounds for all us provincial bumpkins!
Well at least we’re not Baltimore.
that in Manhattan Diane Keaton kept excusing her provincialism by saying… “Well, I’m from Philadelphia, you know!”
Not a judgment there, just an observation. 🙂
Exactly my point. Even people from Iowa mock our lack of sophistication, using Diane Keaton as their mouthpiece.
So where’s your random 10 list, chris? 🙂
Um. How’s this for random?
Beyond that I can’t produce a random 10, because, well, I’d rather not say. Why don’t you download all of the tunes I have here and put them in a random order and we’ll call that my random 10?
Can’t Hide Love – Victor Wooten

Don’t Panic – Coldplay
Run Myself Out Of Town – The Holmes Brothers
Spooky Girlfriend – Elvis Costello
Faling Into You – Kasey Chambers
Excuse Me – Cake
What do you all have?
Ok, let me hop out for a few and I’ll spit one back in a few! I feel in an International mood today… so be ready for some booty shakin stuff!
Unless my mother and her buds show up, there isn’t going to be any curve that keeps me from flunking.
Actually because of you, chere CG… we actually had a friend give us some Nickel Creek a few weeks ago. We both liked it! Thx for the reco on those guys.
I’m glad you liked them!
Hi everyone,
TGIF afternoon. I hate financial reporting.
Shuffle 10:
Breathe – Eliza Carthy
When One Door Closes – Carrie Newcomer
Angel – John Hiatt
The Big Parade – 10,000 Maniacs
Naima – John Coltrane
Fear – Sarah McLachlan
Coo Coo – Big Brother & The Holding Company
Out Of Nowhere – Charlie Parker
Go Leave – Kate & Anna McGarrigle
Muddy Water – Keb’ Mo’
for that ‘it’, my dear. 🙂
Perhaps her referent is missing? I bet it washed away in last night’s deluge…
I was referring to that marvellous piece of artwork that is eerily similar to the one gracing my computer here at work … Funny, that. 😉
I’ve just donned my hip waders, got my water wings … I’m swimming for home now. See ya!
Watch out for froggie orgies on your way home!
Load those up, pour the drinks and head on out to the boogie floor with these tunes… plus the ones I couldn’t remember by name, but only by group such as Los Amigos Invisibles…
random — You keep using that word. I do not think it means, what you think it means.
I used that quote today too! To Cabin Girl if I remember correctly.
Why, yes you did… 🙂
They’re as random as they came outta my brain… Kind of like playing Exquisite Corpse… I thought of a theme and threw them together randomly … is that not random or am I devo?
Okay, Angelique Kidjo is the only one I recognize. Wow.
ok I’ll play although I’m still at work:
Charm – Wild Colonials
Stardust – Frank Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey Orchestra
What a girl wants – Christina Aguilera
Torn – Natalie Imbruglia
If it makes you Happy – Sheryl Crow
Mr. Guder – The Carpenters
Ne Me Quitte Pas – Dee Dee Bridgewater
Mary’s Place – Bruce Springsteen
Sweet Thames Flow Softly – Cherish the Ladies
Can’t Get enough of You — Barry White
The Wild Colonials and Barry White? Cool!
Yeah, I never quite imagined Mary as the Barry White type … such a woman of mystery, hehe.
Mine is like that too. It’s a not-so-random shuffle.
I would think it’s still random — it just doesn’t all come up with one click. It takes 10 clicks.
Oooh, Barry White. I have memories of his music oozing through the house from my brother’s room when he was in his early 20’s and probably very very horny. My brother that is. And Barry White always sounded like he was trying to talk a lady into having sex right then and there anyway.
… that’s a great way to describe his voice SN. I agree!
I agree
Mine keeps calling up the same song, but here’s the newest list of same songs. 🙂
Let’s Jam – The Four Tops
Jamaica Jerk Off – Elton John
Look Through Any Window – The Hollies
The Blacksmith / Black Smithereens – Planxty

Stompin’ At The Savoy – Benny Goodman & His Orchestra
Brighten Your Night With My Day James Taylor
Even though we ain’t got money, I’m so in love with you honey…
Used to love that song, until I realized it was piffle and you really do need money to raise a child – let alone four of them childs.
It’s the thought that counts. 😉
It takes me forever to actually listen to the words of songs — so I can go for years liking a song and then one day realize exactly what the words are and never listen to it again. Not this one, particularly. Just generally.
yeah, me too. I remember being disappointed that it was “got a strange magic” and not “gotta scratch my dick.”
But have you figured out the lyrics to Louie, Louie?
I’ve heard it’s dirty and/or drug related, can’t remember. But it’s more fun to improvise, don’t you think?
persistent questions, and, it ain’t “42”
Louie Louie, me gotta go.
Louie Louie, me gotta go.
A fine little girl, she wait for me.
Me catch the ship across the sea.
I sailed the ship all alone.
I never think I’ll make it home.
Louie Louie, me gotta go .
Three nights and days we sailed the sea.
Me think of girl constantly.
On the ship, I dream she there.
I smell the rose in her hair.
Louie Louie, me gotta go.
Me see Jamaican moon above.
It won’t be long me see me love.
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I never leave again.
Louie Louie, me gotta go.”

Yer Welcome.
Peace
you’re swell dada. And thank’s for all the fish 😉
cause it sailed right over my head…guess I better start drinking, yawl are obviously ahead of me.
If you know 42 that you don’t know so long and thanks for all the fish!
that synapse refused to fire…I’ll have a double of whatever you’re drinking.
and am sticking with the vulgar version.
I agree with you Andi. At least that’s the way I remember it.
Well, that doesn’t sound dirty at all!
Mary I remember you saying that before. I’m the same way. I actually don’t think I know all the words to it, but always like the song. Not my favorite on the album though. Watching the River Run is the one I always liked.
I like most of Loggins and Messina stuff. And I love James Taylor, but I don’t recognize that song.
Took me a second to look it up. The Cd’s name is James Taylor. It’s got one you might remember, Carolina In My Mind. I think it was produced around 68.
I’ve always loved that song. That and Fire and Rain and You’ve Got a Friend are probably my favorites of his.
Fire and Rain is one of my favorites too.
Totally OT but someone is grilling hot dogs in the neighborhood and the smell is making me sick.
Speaking of, George has his slight malady again and he’s whinning to go out.
Be back in a minute.
maybe you’re pregnant <duck and run>
Talk about The Immaculate Conception!
It’s a miracle!
I always thought it was ironic that my first husband’s birthday was on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. And his mom had 9 kids. Go figure.
I bet her soul wasn’t spotless after the first 5 when she starting thinking bad thoughts about them and her husband 🙂
She did her best to beat a few of them to death, so I guess you’re right.
My theology is a little rusty but are there reverse miracles?
Like what?
well, I kinda alway thought that miracles were supposed things people actually wanted to happen. So I was wondering about miracles that people don’t want to happen.
Oh, gotcha. I think that’s just called life.
Or in the case of my old MIL, being Catholic.
Is this the song that has the extra verse on the Loggins & Messina version but not on the Kenny Loggins solo version?
That one is from the Loggins & Messina version. CD Best of Friends.
Certainly spans a few decades… hehe.
Well folks, I’m sneaking out of work a bit early today since I have to take it home with me this weekend anyway. So I’m gonna go enjoy the sunshine for a while. Hope to check back in later… hope you napped up today for a late night FM, hehe.
I’ll try IVG, but can’t promise anything.
My last doggie friend (who is no longer w/ us) was a basset hound, whom I named Lynyrd, after the band. 🙂
What always amazed me is that’s a real persons name, sort of.
You could probably come up with examples all night . . .
I went to a concert, back in the days, and saw Lynyrd Skynyrd and Charlie Daniels.
Real disappointed in Skynyrd, but Daniels was great.
I love Benny Goodman. I’m imagining you weed whackin to Benny. 🙂
Yea Benny and Glenn Miller I like. My Mom loves big band so growing up that’s about all I heard.

That’s cool! Are 78’s those really heavy records that you could break into a million pieces? My mom had a ton of those (literally) and I don’t know where they went. What a shame.
You are so lucky and that is cool.
Yeah they are the heavy one-song records that break into lots and lots of pieces. Sharp pieces 🙂
I think it’s cool. My grandmother bought it for her mother (my great grandmother). So it has nice family history as well as being a nice piece of furniture.
I love having family history stuff like that.
I always liked Benny Goodman more than Artie Shaw. But I’m starting to appreciate Artie.
HI everyone, I have been busy lately shopping and gardening, etc. thought I would bring a nice garden pic. over here to the cafe.

Much better than last week’s, I assure you.

But is ELO really singing or are they just lip syncin?
Are you confusing ELO with Milli Vanilli? I don’t remember them ever getting busted for lip-syncing — but then I’m a radio guy, so how would I know?
Omir at least Milli Vanilli had some class. They didn’t pull an Ashley what’s her name.
Nothing reminds me of high school more than The Year of the Cat.
Mine was more the Turtles and Classics IV. Although back at that time it was a lot of soul music I wished I had now.
Omir I like your music. That means I know a lot of them. 🙂
Hey, I have to head out to the fair with the CabinBoys for a while…can someone throw up a froggy bottom if we need one? Thanks.
See you when I get back!
gotta go. See you all tomorrow.
Everyone give me a minute and I’ll go over and open up a new lounge.
Back in a few.
but I’ll wait till the next Cafe so more than two people will see it…
Must be time for my meds again. I have no idea what an Ashley-what’s-her-name entails. That’s probably a good thing.
