Now I’ll be the first to admit that this isn’t the biggest deal ever, but any time an opportunity to call Pennsylvania’s junior senator a lying sack of shit presents itself, I feel compelled to do so. You may recall that among forty to fifty thousand other things that freaked people out about everybody’s favorite dog loving lying sack of shit, Rick Santorum, was the portion of his book, It Takes a Family where he writes that “It’s amazing that so many kids turn out to be fairly normal, considering the weird socialization they get in public schools.” More amazing, of course, is whatever strange socialization that produced little Rick, but that’s besides the point. Just in time for the holidays, It Takes a Family, as read by Santorum himself, has been released as an audio book, though strangely enough the sentence has been softened a little and changed to “It’s amazing that so many kids turn out to be fairly normal, considering the strange socialization they get in public schools.” (Audio clip here). He also omits the portion of the book where he talks about his kid’s cyberschool, the one he forced the Penn Hills School District to pay for, even though he doesn’t live there. Again, not the biggest deal ever, but what a lying sack of shit. Will Bunch has more.

Here is a brief primer of how I see American socialization potential! IMHO, socialization of our young can be accomplished by one of 3 broad methods up through high school age.
Method 1: Parents socialize according to their traditions up thought kindergarden, and then public schools and various diverse peer groups add or subtract to the mix. This is the American norm, IMO!
Method 2: Parents do very little personal socialization through kindergarden, and then public schools and various diverse peer groups take over once school begins. This may be a more neglectful method, but it all depends on the intent of the parents. More later
Method 3: Parents totally dominate the socialization of their kids through high school, fearing the effect of the outside world. They thus prevent contact with that outside world, and are likely to home school and otherwise smother and totally brainwash their children in the parent’s ideas of social living. This is the Ricky Santorum and fundamentalist religious method!
Personally, I thing parents should protect their children while very young, but not indoctrinate them in a culture/religion. It would be nice if all religions count be taught in public school and young adults could make an objective choice of a religion at say age 18 or take on no religion. That seems totally against human nature, but it may well lead to a better world if tried. The traditional method (method 1) leads to mixed results but has not been too bad, IMO, in its results because children seem to be able to get outside ideas at an early enough time to allow them some independent thoughts and actions!
Then there is the stiffling method, method 3 or Ricky’s method. That method forces all the parent’s good and bad beliefs on the children without any competing themes until the children are basically adult. Can a child so brainwashed ever break out of such a mold after so much “protection” and brainwashing? I doubt it. That in a nutshell is Ricky Santorum’s socialization method. I dare say also that Bob Casey woud not be that different in his views of the process, and I bet he would favor method 3 as well, but maybe not!
“I dare say also that Bob Casey woud not be that different in his views of the process, and I bet he would favor method 3 as well, but maybe not!”
I think that would be a good bet, though I don’t know that you could find anybody foolish enough to take you up on it.
everybody’s favorite dog loving lying sack of shit, Rick Santorum
Nothing wrong with dog loving, it was the whole dog fucking thing that was so disgusting.
So true. Being something of a prude, I just have a hard time writing it that way.
