What’s everyone having?
I’ll take a frozen margarita, light on the salt please…
The service in this place is crappy.
Pfft…where the heck is that bartender, anyway? I had to go comment elsewhere cuz I got tired of waiting!
How are you? I am counting the days till vacation. π
Yay – me too! I haven’t made it to the coast yet this year. π
Yeah, we need some pretty sunrise shots.
I’ll put in your order. But I really could just recycle the ones from last summer and you’d never know.
I thought we took pictures for our own gratification.
Maybe she’ll take enough pictures so I don’t have to. π
You don’t need another 200 or 300 pictures of the CBs?
I’m lazy, and SN’s pictures are always so wonderful.
Did you a Tequilla Sunrise, or the regular kind? How about a sunset shot instead.
It’s still cold and rainy here.
Spectacular. But where’s the tequila?
I was going to say no alcohol before noon, but I see that it’s just past (12:05pm Tuesday here).
You’ll probably want to supply your own, anyway, as it’s hard to get good tequilla down here. And don’t even get me started on Australian beer.
For all you hot Northerners, here’s a “cool” shot. It’s the Aurora Australis (aka the Southern Lights).
That’s the Southern Cross constellation in the top center (and the view from our front porch).
my earlier spectacular and apply it here instead. That’s an incredible shot.
I’ve been very fortunate in my sky watching, in that I’ve seen both the Northern Lights and the Southern Lights. I don’t think of myself as much of a globe trotter mostly because I don’t really like cities and therefore pass on the usual tourist travels), but I’ve been nearly to the Bearing Sea in the north, and stood on the edge of the Southern Ocean. Maybe I’m really a water trotter, as I grew up on the Pacific, have waded in the Atlantic, and have most recently swam in the Indian Ocean and the Tasman Sea.
Beautiful keres … π
We get the Northern version out in our backyard once in a while, but I’ve only seen them that fine three times in my life. Once here, once in the mountains in Montana, and once in a plane flying into DC during a hige solar storm.
What a great porch view.
Because we are at least 20 miles from greater Hobart, and especially because we are nicely situated in slender valley, we get great night skys. When it’s a clear night the milkyway stretches from horizon to horizon. It’s one of the reasons we bought the place.
Oh, the Yellow-tails just came back. I can tell from the screeching.
I’ll have a Founders Pale Ale!
so we’re heading out for soup/salad (soup can actually taste good on a hot day).
Only thing I accomplished today was reorganizing my iTunes music library; a lot of names were either spelled or categorized wrong (like “Weird Al” Yankovic and Weird Al Yankovic, that sort of thing). Also standardized some of the classical performances by listing them by ensemble, then added the conductor in the comments section. Makes it a lot easier to sort the list, and I think I even recovered some space on the iPod.
Too damn hot to do anything else — we reached a high of 92 here, down to 88 now. If it’s cool enough this evening I may tackle the last of the pantry shelves (mainly putting crap away).
Have a good one, folks…
Hey folks! I just finished writing my blog entry for the day. It’s about the environment (I know, I know, there are more important things to talk about), but perhaps you will read it and learn a little something! π
Well no, grasshopper, the environment ranks right up there at the top of the list of things to talk about because if we make our air unbreathable, our water undrinkable, and our soil poisonous, the rest of the shit we do won’t matter at all.
And on that cheery note, how ya doing?
I’m okay. Getting used to using my laptop again, as my desktop finally died last night. A long day, but once Monday’s over, it gets better from hereon out.
On the other hand, my legs are still extremely stiff from running over the weekend. Didn’t know I was this outta shape.
The really sad thing is that when you look back in twenty years you’ll realize it was the best shape of your life. π
Hey now! I guarantee I’m going to be in shape when I’m 40!
And don’t make me think about how old I’m going to be in the future!!! π
Okay, so how young are going to be in the future?
Not young enough, that’s for sure! π
I kinda hate to pull the old fogy card but really I have no desire to be your age again. Getting from 20 to here was a pretty damn good trip.
Of course, knowing what I know now. π
to be a baby.
Good one …
Have things cooled down some for you guys?
at least until Friday. Is it going to cool off any for you?
It’s already cooled down tonight — we’re only at 96 now!
I happen to kind of like our earth and air and water…so a diary about the environment isn’t a yawner at all for me. I’d like to think my future grandchildren will be able to enjoy the same things I do.
Cerveza, por favor. Sol perhaps, or Dos Equis. Just got my antipenultimate draft of the WebMage sequel off to my first readers, and that clears my plate of official projects for a month. Going to spend the first twelve days of that road tripping to Syracuse to go hang with a bunch of physics folks. Then it’s home for promotion stuff. Some where in there I should get started on a new trilogy too, but that’s still at the fun stage, before it becomes work.
How’s tricks?
Haven’t caught ya live in the cafe in a while.
Still riding the highs from getting all that stuff done? π
Yeah, I haven’t been around much. I tend to be extremely productive in bursts, with lulls where I’m still writing but at slower pace. The last few weeks I’ve been completely submerged in imaginary worlds and not terribly coherent. I’m actually coming down off the high. I feel so relaxed that I’m practically a liquid, and I’m going to need a couple of days with extra sleep here real soon. How is life in your neck of the woods. We just finally had the heat wave break tonight, so I’m on the screen porch at the moment.
And all good … well except for the liquid part … π
Things are hot here … like everywhere.
and humidity at 37%. Low tonight supposed to be low 50s(F) , so I may be making hot cocoa before the night is over.
Got back home last night to a 94F house, took forever to cool it down with outside air, finally hit 72 by the next morning.
Nice break after Sat and Sun.
Good to see ya NDD!
Now don’t start tempting fate w/ that hot chocolate talk … π
It got up to 110F here today. :0
You’re probably right about the tempting fate. Guess I’ll stick with the cold lemonade tonight.
I assume ya got your AC fixed then… just in the nick of time?
Made a visit to your b, always fun to see new photos. Phlox, I’ve never heard of. Interesting how the petals are configured.
And great shot of the mourning dove. I’m surprised she let you in that close, must be accostomed to your presence.
Do they sing “normal” up your way. Like oo, OO, oo, oo, oo, oo? Which is what I’ve heard all my life.
Or have you got weird ones like I’ve had here the past several years.
The last weird one that I heard just a few days ago was the above, then the first three notes of the above, twice, then back to the normal one again.
Then I’ve had some who just do the first five notes and forget the last note.
Yeah … the dove is in such a weird spot. I should take another shot further back to give you a better idea of how close that nest is to where we pass by. I could reach up and touch it easily.
As for songs, I’m not sure if it’s weird — it’s the regular coo coo coo sound. I’ve never counted it either, so not sure I’m any help to ya! π
It’s been too hot to take any photos or do anything. I was actually glad to be at work today b/c of the ac.
So how’d your w/e go? Did you have a good time?
The wedding involved a whole bunch of fun loving people having a great time. The highlight was the 5 year-old ring bearer dancing most of the night at the reception. He even got into some “break” dancing and had a huge circle of folks cheering him on, as his parents just stood off to the side shaking their heads and grinning. Quite a crackup that was!!
Hey, I think I found some sage growing wild around the farm. Sure smelled like it when we rubbed the leaves. (Got photo, but can’t load till I get back to the city.)
I thought you might be back in town.
That little fella sounds like quite the cutie patootie.
which sounds fabulous. Going to toddle off to bed now. Night all.
Hiya O
Kinda slow around here again tonight eh
It’s always slow until you show up … π
Are you dragging today?
too hot for comfort…although it wasn’t quite as bad today as yesterday; somethings wrong when you’re forced to say 90º+ is good, know what I mean?
Sounds pretty ugly in O-town too.
It was the kind of heat that catches your breath … After being inside the a/c’ed work all day, when I first went outside it felt like I was suffocating for a brief moment … very odd feeling. I hope that is the last to the triple digit temps here this summer.
It’s cooling down now and hopefully the rest of the week won’t be too bad.
Flying into a hot, humid climate from here and walking off the plane’s like getting hit in the face w/ a hot, wet towel.
May be back to hi 80’s by wkend, but far from over.
Any revision forward on the a/c date?
That’s what it was like. Okay … you’re right. It’s going to be 86 wed and 88 thu, prob w/ humidity. But tomorrow’s only going to 79!
They’re coming to give a quote on Thursday. And two others are being scheduled for quotes as well. One day at a time …
the nite time lows the past 3-4 days have been mid to hi 70’s.
Not good sleeping weather.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you on a/c asap.
But I thought I’d go and check the weather nerd links to see what our forecast was going to be … turns out you were right about us too … π
Thx for the fingers.
70s not good sleeping? Are you a cold sleeper too?
if it doesn’t drop below that then I’m screwed here too. When you’re down to a sheet between you and the air ain’t much left you can do to stay cool.
Angle the fan … sleep naked … break out the ice cubes … See there’s options.
draw the line at ice cubes…wet spots are uncomfortable no matter the temp…:{)
I leave a window over the bed open at nite all winter, set T to 50º and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I could say something along the lines of only if you’re not too preoccupied to notice them … π
I like it cool too … Like to snuggle.
occupations eventually end, unfortunatley…and then what?
That’s when you call dibs … Or you’re so satiated from your occupations that you fall asleep immediately … π
Yo dada, you so innuendoish… gotta love ya for that, if there weren’t enough other reasons!
You and Bu doing ok tonight? Pretty much had comatose pups around here tonight, despite a brief spell of playing when we got home…
in the garage or basement. X had her up in the mtns yesterday and wore her out…she loves it tho. She was up here but now’s down laying in the ctyd.
Good to hear Andy’s beginning to get it…Pepa the Enforcer-gotta like that…hopefully Rolly has his Don Coreleone face on.
many decadences ago 3 couples worth of us were in Winnipeg on holiday. We’re eating at a Mexican place on Osborne, just before ya get to River Ave. The women go back to the restrooms and come back snickering, ha ha!
We say, “What’s so funny?”
They say, (or as near as I can remember) “Well, on the wall of the stall it’s written, Women of the world unite, let him sleep on the wet spot.”
So there ya have it, and I’m here to tell ya it all started in Canada… some years back.
What a great thing to have started … π nt
what, and take a chill?
Hmmm, naked sound good!
But ice cubes… what would one do with them?
Oh my, I know it’s hot (still 80 here at this hour), but day yammmm…. have we gone from petal porn to ….?
How are my favorite loons doing tonight, aside from us all moaning about the heat?
Oh, and for anxious fans of IT, We have concluded that it has done its thing for the year and will not bloom, unless a big surprise awaits us… looks like it’s dying back for the year… <waaahhhhh>
But there has been an unusual development in the bulb department that I hope to chronicle tomorrow after work. A mystery of sorts….
It’s good to see you … excuse me while I give you some smoochies … {{{:*}}}.
Okay, now that’s out of the way. π
Things okay w/ Andy … how ’bout work. Bummer about IT …
Thanks for the smoochies, hon! It’s been a blue day for the most part, and the heat hasn’t helped… but I tell ya, having to run that stupid space heater in my cube when it’s 98 outside just frosts my balls, so to speak. To think about the energy wasted in this country due to idiotic ‘climate control’ in office buildings! I’m ashamed… when dear Canadians are sweltering w/out a/c!!
Well, as Snakefinger used to sing, There ain’t no justice in life! (If none of you are Snakefinger fans, that’s too bad… he was great… if you can ever find Night of Desirable Objects snap it up… or have me burn you a disc of it… hehe.
Andy is doing well, in fact Pepa has been giving him “lessons” the past few days and he’s working on fitting in, I think… though he’s still a bit too barky for my tastes, since he sits by the window during the day and barks at anyone who goes by…
Currently, however, he’s stretched out on the floor snoozing to the left of me here in my study… looking really cute. π
Shouldn’t that prevent the whole frosty ball thing … π
Sorry to hear you’re still a little blue. Are you taking the St.J wort?
I imagine Pepa could give good lessons … LOL. It’s good to hear that he’s settling in though, and he’s hanging w/ ya.
So what’s up w/ the unusual bulb development situation? Can you give us any hints?
night for reentry.
Yeah, ya gotta keep your eye out for O/dada they be generating lots of “heat” tonight!
I’m breaking my rule about late nights, but what the hell. I won’t feel any worse in the morning than if I had gone to bed 2 hrs ago which was the plan… Besides, I have really missed my time here lately, and despite the near tears that hit me off and on, things do seem to be looking up a bit here. Got more of my St. John’s Wort and am dosing up on it, which is another reason to stay out of the intense sun for a while…
I will have a ripe tomato soon… perhaps within the week, I just have to check again when I can actually spend more than 10 mins outside at a time, lol.
I have christened the chosen plant Olivia, and it will be blooming soon, I think. You’ll all see it in its glory when that happens… and that mystery flower I alluded to earlier will also make O smile… more on that tomorrow.
Make it easier to load …? Not sure how late everyone’s staying, so let me know.
I see you’ve answered some of my questions about the St. J wort. I hope you’re feeling better IVG.
An excellent on the tomato! Those first blooms/ fruits are exciting.
You named a plant for me? Wow! What plant is it? I guess you’re not going to say … π
yup, I’ve been taking the SJW, but ran out for a while last week, which I think set me back a bit, but back on track now.
No, I will tantalize you with the Olivia plant for a while, but you’ll love it when you see it (as we always do) … it reminds me of Canada in more ways than pink.
Think Hockey.
You’re way good at this tantalizing stuff … π
I’ll go pop up a new cafe — brb.
We’re glad you made it…
Hopefully a sign things are getting better.
Did I miss any spine tingling excitement from your neck of the mtns?
O kept me up till dawn the other night, and I’m still trying to recover from both.
records of ’36!!
I know someone who was out farming back then and cultiviating summerfallow at 114F. Didn’t realize it was that hot, but when informed of the fact, took the rest of the day off.
’36 was also the year the original family farm house burned to the ground. They figured some sort of spontaneous combustion.
As far as that “O” character… must be one of them thar “instigators” that my high school English teacher warned us about… during his lecture one day on which of us was likely to end up as either “instigator” or “ditch-diggers”.
Interesting … π
Your farm spontaneously combusted?!
(I think I’d rather be an instigator than a ditch-digger … wouldn’t you?)
It would have been my grandmother’s farm house that burnt, Aug I think. The hired man had to jump from a second story window… with only his T-shirt on. First he had to be convinced it was OK to break the screen, ha!
BTW: I was listed as “instigator”, no doubt still am!
records already this year.
It’s so hot that the thermo cut offs in the recessed lights that are in the roof cavity kicked in…
got any idea what temp they’re set for?
but it’s pretty high, this is only the second time it’s happened in nearly 10 yrs…they’re IC cans [insulation contact] as everything is cathedral clgs.
and curious if the insulated areas are vented at all? Or how, if so.
1″ air space above insul…2×12 rafters, 10″ insul, w/ ridge vent and low profile roof jacks…top of rafters at hip bds are notched…pretty minimal air flow, but primarily for moisture venting not heat.
for moisture.
Before I left N CA I heard a real roof disaster story from owner-built cath style homes with NO venting.
Hmmm, they just couldn’t figure out why their roof boards were rotting under the shingles…
up here, but moisture will find it’s way in, and then back out somewhere you doen/t want if.
Plus, if you don’t allow a little venting it’ll bake the shingles big time. Mile high + elev UV will chew up just about anything…25 yr roof shingle’s rarely get to 20.
Ya know guys, you make me feel so stupid sometimes, lol. I’m such an ignoramus on these matters that it fascinates me to see you guys talk intelligently about such matters.
Makes me envious of such manly construction dudes… and oh, btw, you are coming to Chicago in Oct right? We have some beers to quaff there…. (since MaryB’s not here, I have to apply the subtle pressure…)
too, but not at a rate that generates much if any talk about it as far as bldg materials.
Would you happen to know if incoming UV rates are higher in recent years?
I had an experience several years back; I was sitting on the front deck around 9AM with a cup of coffee. And the sun felt so uncomfortable on my skin I had to go back in the house. I had no other explanation for it than that the intensity of the UV that day had to have been quite a bit higher than previously experienced.
but I would suspect it has increased. Primarily due to the degradation of the ozone layer.
Effects are higher at altitude and the closer you get to the equator as well.
I don’t think it’s the uv that makes you feel hot, but my memory’s a bit clouded on that.
It’s a strong consideration/determinant up here when looking at materials…polycarbs and most plastics do extremely poor, and all materials suffer. Finding paint that lasts even 5 yrs is a bitch.
That and the temp extremes, especially surface temps in winter and differentials from sun to shade…just more shit to think/worry about…
Got my copy of WebMage from Powell’s today! Read the first few pages till the spouse made me put it away till tomorrow, else he knows I’ll stay up all night reading it. Reading, feh…I tend to devour good books, and from the opening, this one looks like a fantabulous read — great that there’s already a sequel in the works. π
Oddly enough, the other book I got was #3 in David & Leigh Eddings latest series The Dreamers — in for quite a bit of SF/fantasy reading this week. #4 is due out in hardback next month (#3 just came out in paperback); don’t think I’m going to be able to wait a year for the paperback version… π
Definitely need more bookcases — it’s either that or (horrors!) fewer books…
Wow-people are still around! Of course as usual I won’t be able to stay.
Went on a blind-date/meet-up in the next town over. Guy was interesting enough despite being a software engineer-no offence but I’ve been out with a number of them and they often lack basic social skills. But I had to drive through miles of one big box/corporate franchise strip mall after another to the restaurant. I got to thinking that some people don’t know anything but them, that they eat, drink and wear what they’re told by these places and think they’re free.
I mentioned this to my eccentric housemate and he was of the opinion that I was about as far away from that culture as a person could be, farther than anyone else he knew. Knowing his friends that’s quite a compliment…I think.
the dating scene is one thing I DON’T miss from my singlehood days…
Still up for a bit till it cools off…starting to be more impressed with Brangelina (Brad & Angelina); first they give money to Namibia, now Brad’s pushing “green living” using renewable resources to rebuild New Orleans. He sponsored a contest to design a 12-unit apartment complex using renewable resources; it got over 3000 entrants and has been narrowed down to 6 finalists. “Today” show did an interview with Brad Pitt; “Countdown” showed part of it tonight. Plus after the first flurry of baby photos of Shiloh, they’ve pretty much pulled the spotlight back from her…good move.
Hope everyone has a (relatively) cool night…
Howdy, Cali! Funny you should mention Brad P… I too got more respect for him after seeing him on KO tonight as well… he still sounds like a dumbass piece of beefcake, but at least his “cause” is a good one, and one I can cheer. Keith’s closer on that piece was priceless though… that little groan he gave before the sign off was hilarious.
And wasn’t that Coultergeist slap down brilliant? That should bother your conscience, IF you have one… I laughed out loud and professed my undying love for KO. In a nice, kinda platonic sorta way… that is, lol.
I still refer to Keith as “my imaginary 2nd husband”, which alternately amuses and annoys my real-life current 1st husband. lol
My favorite was the end of the original Coultergeist smackdown, when he said, “Imagine defending her at the Last Judgement — and trying to find her soul.”
Classic… π
Things are cooling down here … Had a bit of rain earlier. I hope you can get to sleep soon.
Down to 15C, 59F, so far. Should make for a good night of sleep if I can extricate myself from the computer chair.
cuz I don’t want to break the margins!
The great bulb mystery (such as it is, lol) is something that we planted several years ago and has never bloomed, but comes up every year… well, this year it decided to bloom, and it was not what we were expecting. Goes contrary to all notions of hardiness in this zone… more than that, I won’t say just now. It is pretty though, and yes it’s pink!
Do you need a fresh one?
I love surprises — of the good, flower-y blooming, pink kind. π
I hope you can get out to document it!
Here
