24 won the Best Drama Emmy. While I’m glad it did, it shouldn’t have own for this season (any of the first three seasons, it should have). However, seeing a couple of the actors who have starred on the series since the beginning – Dennis Haybsert and Carlos Bernard – who were killed off this year, being up on the stage when the show got the award, was a bittersweet touch.
Well, having seen all five seasons, and most more than once, I think this was the best, most relevant story line yet. A president out of control, a cross between Nixon and Bush, with a Martha Mitchell wife thrown in – and Jack Bauer saying “We’re going after the president”! What more could one ask, in these dark times??? I’m really glad it one. Yeah, Dennis was fabulous. He’ll get his sooner or later. THAT is written in the stars already.
It may have been the best storyline for those of us politically inclined to the left. However, what I want in a TV series is good writing and continuity. This past season of 24 had next to none of that, which was extremely disappointing.
Well, we would still disagree on artistic grounds. The scene where Martha seduces her husband? That alone was Emmy-worthy. There was a lot of really good writing this season. The scene where whatshisname had to die to save the rest of the team? His cohort who didn’t want to make the sacrifice until the reality of the situation became crystal clear? Edgar’s death and Zoe anytime? I think the writing was absolutely compelling.
I have been following Tropical Storm/Hurricane Ernesto. On Dr. Jeff Masters’ Wunderblog I saw Haiti with 99% of its forests gone – desertification of a tropical island.
I have been seeing trees around my community dying this summer – too hot and too dry. It hurts to see this “beautiful, blue planet” destroyed.
Steven D shared a quote from General Omar Bradley that was something like: We know a lot more about killing than we do about living.
Sometimes…sometimes the sadness overwhelms…
Time for everyone to read “Collapse” by Jared Diamond. When cultures stop caring about their environment, and when the rich separate themselves out from the rest of the population, collapse inevitably follows. Haiti’s been hanging on by threads. And American business interests have had a lot to do with that too. Why fix a source of cheap labor?
Saw most of the Emmys tonite. Since I’ve been in the ‘Arts-related business’ for some years, I’ve had some personal contact with a couple of the winners: Barry Manilow and Cloris Leachman.
Re: Barry
I don’t know what all of you think of Mr. Manilows’ songs, stylings, etc. but from having met/talked with him on several occasions, I can offer this:
he is one short, really weird-looking dude. (IMHO).
The last time I was involved with the presentation of one of his shows at a Theatre I was with at the time, Mr. Manilow stayed at a very, very nice hotel, one short block from the Theatre. Nevertheless, he demanded a Mercedes stretch limo to transport him the approximately 150 feet from the front door of his hotel to the Theatre (and to remain on call and on the clock, ‘just in case). In addition, after the first rehearsal, he decided that he was ‘just not confortable with other people seeing him’ in the Theatre backstage — like stagehands, Theatre staff, etc. So in order not to offend his sensibilities, the same stagehands he was so disturbed actually to come in contact with, had to contruct a ‘temporary hallway’ from 4′ x 8′ sheets of plywood on custom-built stands, to run the entire length of the backstage hallway from the Stage Door entrance to the Master Dressing Room to which he was assigned, so that he could come in and walk the entire way to his dressing room, without seeing anyone he ‘was not comfortable with’. I thought this was somewhat eccentric.
Can’t tell you the Cloris Leachman one, though. If she caught on, she’d likely sue…
The utter wankerness of Rahm Emmanuel. He won’t accept emails from Americans who are not his constituents but has noooooooooo problem telling them how the should vote:
For the vile Losermann.
This AssClown has to go along with the rest of the Demcrat Party ‘aristocracy’!
Off with their heads! politically speaking that is, say I.
I heard that Emmanuel is the Mossad’s man on the hill. I don’t know if that’s true – that was just gossip I heard when I worked with various Congressional offices for a while….
I lost Man Eegee.
How did you lose him?
I lost him on the road (17) between Phoenix and Sedona.
Check under your couch cushions. That’s where I usually find things.
Me, too. But I’ve never found a comma down there — which is all that boran2 seems to be missing.
LOL!
I found 37 cents, but no Man Eegee.
