Still waiting to hear from my friend about his web page. So, here’s some of what I’m listening to.
My Pink Half Of The Drainpipe – Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band
I Ain’t Gonna Eat My Heart Out – The Rascals
Redemption Song – Bob Marley and the Wailers
Mary Jane’s Last Dance – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Never heard of the Bonzo Dog Doo-dah Band, but I have that Chieftains disc…and I love TMBG. We used to listen to them in my Friday afternoon chromatography lab.
They started out as a group of art school students who got together to do for music what dadaism did for art — namely, give it a big kick in the pants. (In fact they were sometimes known as the Bonzo Dog Dada Band.) Much of their stuff was surreal, some was satirical, all of it was funny and well-done.
One of the main perpetrators was Neil Innes, who went on to write a bunch of songs for Monty Python, including the songs for Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Life Of Brian (including “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life”).
Some of their better known songs are “I’m The Urban Spaceman” which was a minor hit in the UK at least, “The Intro And The Outro,” “Hunting Tigers Out Indiah,” and “Death Cab for Cutie,” which appeared in the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour film. In fact Paul McCartney produced “Urban Spaceman” under the pseudonym “Apollo C. Vermouth.” “The Intro and the Outro” is particular silly — it introduces all of the members of the band and the instruments they play, and then goes on to such unlikely introductions as John Wayne on xylophone, Adolph Hitler on vibes and General de Gaulle on accordion. (When they introduced Eric Clapton on ukulele, though, that really was Eric Clapton playing the ukulele.)
Best piece of trivia about the Bonzos: Do you remember the novelty hit “Winchester Cathedral” by the New Vaudeville Band? When the single unexpectedly took off, Geoff Stephens (the guy behind the single) found himself with a problem. People were asking for the band to tour, but there was no band — he just got a bunch of studio musicians together to record it. So he asked the Bonzos if they wanted to be the New Vaudeville Band. They declined. (Well, all except one guy who joined the touring incarnation of the New Vaudeville Band, but that’s a different story.)
Second best: If you’re familiar with Mike Oldfield’s album Tubular Bells (the source of the theme to The Exorcist), Bonzo Viv Stanshall is the guy at the end of side 1 introducing the instruments.
I just got my hands on that Chieftains album and I love it. I’ve always liked “Down The Old Plank Road” from when I heard a recording of Uncle Dave Macon doing it back in the 20s or early 30s.
I’m not sure what’s going on this weekend. Our church is doing a chili cookoff next weekend and they want a bunch of us to get together and do some “hillbilly music” for it, so I suppose at some point we should get together and rehearse. We’re looking at some of the songs from O Brother Where Art Thou with a couple others thrown in (like This Land Is Your Land).
I’ll have to pull mine out and listen to it- it’s been a while. They’ve done a lot of cool albums where they collaborate with other interesting musicians.
I know I should remeber this…do you play banjo, Omir?
Psi-better study hard so you can get a good job (doubles over with laughter)! Oops-sorry-I was overcome by a cloud of cynicism about the future of the labor force (not your talents).
We’re finishing up a pile of projects that need to be done or almost done for practical and aesthetic reasons before the school starts at the end of the month. I’ll be happy to get back to doing just maintenance. The admin knew all this stuff needed to be done long ago.
So I guess my random 10 is one long whine.
(Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty – KC & The Sunshine Band
All Day and All of the Night – The Kinks
Point of Know Return – Kansas
Delirious – Prince
Movin On – Bad Company
Come Back Down – Toad the Wet Sprocket
Vasoline – Stone Temple Pilots
Bad to the Bone – George Thorogood & The Destroyers
Big Yellow Taxi – Joni Mitchell
Last Chance on the Stairway – Duran Duran
I’m kinda halfway around today, lots of personal stuff this week, but glad I caught the FRT Lounge. 🙂
Big Country – Béla Fleck & The Flecktones
The Mountains Win Again – Blues Traveler
Love Sneakin’ Up On You – Bonnie Raitt
Lullaby Baby Blues – Keb’ Mo’
Punta Del Soul – Dave Grusin
Carey – Joni Mitchell
My Wild Child – Cowboy Junkies
Ice – Spirit
While My Guitar Gently Weeps – The Beatles
Epilogue – Bill Evans
I played the trombone in jazz band. Additionally, I have also played the violin, viola, piano, baritone, and guitar in the past as well. Unfortunately, college doesn’t really lend itself to playing instruments just for fun. :/
I guess that’s a sure sign that things have changed since the old, old days because the dorms were full of people who played for fun (mostly guitars but there were a healthy smattering of wind and reed instruments too).
I’m impressed with your musical ability — I have zip.
Thanks – I’m sure I suck for the most part nowadays. I’d love to pick everything up again, particularly in getting better on the guitar (I self-taught myself up to a basic level), but I just don’t think I’ll have the time.
Ah…so this random 10 is just a list of 10 random songs that you’re listening to? I’m afraid to post my stuff up, as much of it is probably too new for all of you ancient folks. 😛
Party shuffle? Is that something different than regular shuffle?
Anyways, here are my 10 songs. Surprising that with 283 different artists, I got some doubles on some artists.

Exactly — there’s only a very small difference in our heights so no you aren’t tall in comparison to me — unlike the differences in our hipness. I’m just really very sorry but you’ll just have to accept that you are too kool for skool.
Well, I know me much better than you do, and since I am certain that I am not hip by any measure, it actually looks like you’re just going to have to accept that you’re wrong.
PS. You’d also be wrong if you quibbled with me about that “blissfully fulfilled” thing — wow, it’s a really bad day to be your ego. ;p
Indy, when someone calls us the kewl kids, please don’t tell them to stop…let me bask in it for a minute before the cold harsh reality of my un-hipness sets back in. 🙂
How do you figure? You seem like a pretty kewl chick to me.
Trust me, while I have been friends with the kewl kids, I am a huge dork. Always have been, probably always will be. I don’t think this is an insult; merely an accurate social categorization that doesn’t reflect on anyone else but me. And I’m okay with it, really. 🙂
Now for the mini rant. I really get tired of Democrats and Progressives giving up completely on Texas. We have some damn fine candidates running who are going to win and lots more would if people would just start helping!!! It gets old seeing articles on blogs and news site that never mention the races in Texas at all but will talk about every other candidate even if they don’t stand a snow balls chance in hell of winning. ( Okay, now I feel better. LOL)

Why yes, yes I do. At least sort of. Kinda.
OK, I’m only barely musically ept. But I have a good time at it.
Hey Frog Ponders! How goes it? It’s a Friday afternoon…and I’m studying for my classes. No fun for me… :/
Psi-better study hard so you can get a good job (doubles over with laughter)! Oops-sorry-I was overcome by a cloud of cynicism about the future of the labor force (not your talents).

Yeah, it’s always way cool to see what everyone’s listening to, even when I don’t recognize half the songs.
Glad you made it! Especially with KC and the Sunshine Band in your 10…
Heh, I actually dated one of “KC”‘s cousins for a short while. She was quite the booty wrangler; apparently it runs in the family.
Crossed over to both Indy and CG — amazing.
Big Country – Béla Fleck & The Flecktones

I think I know almost all your stuff this week. Who is Bill Evans?
He’s one of the greatest jazz pianists.
My lack of culcha is showing…
Forget about the culture — you really are missing some amazing music — awesome in the old meaning of the word.
Wish I had some jazz music at all…I was in the jazz band at high school. Absolutely enjoyed playing the music.
4600 songs and no jazz? Methinks the lad doth protest too much.
What instrument?
I played the trombone in jazz band. Additionally, I have also played the violin, viola, piano, baritone, and guitar in the past as well. Unfortunately, college doesn’t really lend itself to playing instruments just for fun. :/

and get the next 10 songs.
Certainly too new for me but CG is very, very hip and Indy isn’t far behind.
OTOH, I’m betting I’ve got all kind of old, old stuff you’ve never heard of.
Not much of a surprise. 😛
Okay, lemme put iTunes on random…hold on…
I use the party shuffle.
Party shuffle? Is that something different than regular shuffle?

CBtE would like to borrow your music collection.
All 4,600 songs or so? 😛
I would love them all Psi!!!! I am always gleaming through my many cds and songs to find ones for my podcast. LOL
Well, I can tell there would be some duplication with his own collection… 🙂
LOL I have very eclectic taste in music and have some of most everything.
I can tell. What are some of your faves?
Some of my faves……
almost anything by Bette Midler, Cleo Lane has one of the best jazz voices on earth, Eartha Kitt is a favorite for many reasons,Elton John will always be a favorite, Carly Simon rules!!!!, Rob Thomas not on sings like an angel but ….., Santana is one of the best bands ever to play music!!!!, Jethro Tull is out of this worl, … throw in lots of disco one hit wonders and others and don’t forget great classical music, country western like Mary Chapin Carpenter, faith hill, Linda Rhonstad(sp) can sing anything, Queen Latefa,Queen,Donna Summer, Earth, Wind and Fire, … the list goes on and on. Eartha Kitt is excellent…and you should hear the CBs sing along to Santa Baby with her!
YOu know who else has the most amazing voice as far as I’m concerned? Aaron Neville.
Yes He does!!!! I heard Eartha Kitt Sing wityhnthe SF SYmphony when I lived there and loved it!!!!
I am not hip, not even remotely. I am what the kids [used to?] call old skool.
compared to me, you are the height of hip
Yeah, but that’s like saying compared to you I’m tall, when in fact I’m 5’4″. ;p
Nope. To be equivalent, you’d have to be 6′.
I know how tall you are, and I totally don’t buy that “talk tall” bullshit you like to sell. 🙂
Exactly — there’s only a very small difference in our heights so no you aren’t tall in comparison to me — unlike the differences in our hipness. I’m just really very sorry but you’ll just have to accept that you are too kool for skool.

Since I know my ego much better than you, I think not.
Indy, when someone calls us the kewl kids, please don’t tell them to stop…let me bask in it for a minute before the cold harsh reality of my un-hipness sets back in. 🙂
I was only exempting myself from the categorization, not you. 🙂
If you aren’t cool, I’m not cool either. :p
Kwel or even the correct spelling cool is not what comes to mind when I think of you. The word that comes to mind is FABULOUS!!!!
C’mon, open up your iTunes and give us the first 10. We might surprise you.
I have kids your age!…Wait a minute…:(
She’s acting sort of coy and centerfoldish here.
like HJ is worried you’re going to try to steal her pillow.
At least she’s good about putting her head on the pillow instead of her puppy butt.
You mean you don’t like that old song “put your butt on my pillow”?
No, especially not the ‘whisper in my ear’ part. P.U.
the problem is that it’s rarely a whisper
What a sweet baby!!!!!!
1.Devil’s Kitchen -The Flying Other Brothers
