When I followed the link to MyDD and then the one to Heather Wilson, I got a message from Norton that the security had just stopped an attack on my computer. Being a dummy about technology,I’m not sure if this was coincidence or some kind of cyber retaliation. I just thought I should warn you all.
I didn’t get that warning, but here at work we use a different virus scanner. If it gives you any information about what virus it says it’s blocking, let us know.
Anybody who doesn’t have a particular horse in this race is welcome to join me in attacking Jim Talent — that stem cell hating, Rush loving conservative Bush follower 🙂
the nature of a Google bomb. You can’t just mention the no-talent hack McCaskill is running against, you have to do it this way:
Anybody who doesn’t have a particular horse in this race can join me in attacking Jim Talent, because only Jim Talent could be as corrupt, inept, lazy and criminally negligent as Jim Talent has turned out to be.
Notice the difference? Anytime you refer to Jim Talent, you use that link to do it. Do it enough and anytime anyone Googles for Jim Talent, the Contra Costa Times article the link points to will be the first thing that comes up in the search. That’s the entire point of a Google bomb.
(Darn, my favorite example is gone. It used to be that if you Googled the phrase “more evil than Satan himself,” the first thing that came up was the entry for Microsoft’s home page. Now the first few entries are meta-entries from news sites talking about that particular whispering campaign.)
I certainly didn’t…thanks Sir Omir, for the first answer I’ve ever read that made the light bulb go on…NOW I get it!…:{)
The way a G-bomb works is to create enough links to a particular phrase to have that phrase come up at the top of a Google search. The less common the phrase is, the better the chance of success. The example I quoted to Mary above used the phrase “more evil than Satan himself;” the first person to figure out how to Google-bomb used a phrase like “no-talent hack” to, um, surprise a designer friend of his.
Phrases like Jim Talent are unfortunately pretty common, since they show up on news sites and political sites and stuff all the time, so I’m not sure if this is going to have much of an effect on the Google rankings of, say, Dave Reichert. Still, it’s nice to have all these links in one place; you could market it as Sleaze-In-A-Box, your all-in-one solution for links to Republican crime, corruption and cronyism.
Nobody actually has to click on the link, the link just needs to appear. Google doesn’t count page hits from the link, it counts the times the link appears. Right?
Google just counts how many links it finds to the phrase in question. For that reason I’m pretty sure that means that even if you refer to Dave Reichert or some other candidate in your sig, you should probably still use the Google bomb if you refer to him or her in the body of the post. (Sorry, I’d do your guy, but I have Dave Reichert in my paste buffer right now and I’m going to pound him a couple more times. He wouldn’t be my congressman, as he represents the area where I work but not where I live, but I’d still like to see Darcy Burner beat Dave Reichert.
And we should try to do that. AND/OR … we could makes lots and lots of posts in a one day period and rely on the link in the signature to be picked up all those times 🙂
I guess I now have an excuse to visit the cafe more.
Oh yeah, like you need an excuse for that. 🙂
I live to serve. I may not know a lot about politics, but hey, I know my Google bombs. 🙂
The link is in my signature line so it’s in every post I do.
Anyone who doesn’t know what candidate to choose to google bomb can join me by adding the google bomb link for Talent to your signature line.
I know I’ve been told a couple of times, but I just can’t remember how to do the quick and easy link. Would you or someone else be so kind as to tell me so I, too, can change my sig?
using my favorite candidate, Dave Reichert:
First, you have to know what the link is. The easiest way is to go up to the original diary, click the link and copy it out of the address bar in your browser (highlight, then control-C).
Then if you want to put it in your sig, you paste it in (control-V) like this:
The and are optional but useful here on BT because sigs are not italicized by default like they are over at Big Orange. It makes it more obvious that the line is a sig. Also, remember that sigs are limited to 160 characters, and every character in the link counts, so you have to keep it pretty short when you’re linking to something.
Thanks a million. That Richard Pombo is true scum. I would love to see Richard Pombo thrown out of office. Richard Pombo is totally corrupt and is destroying the environment he is supposed to be preserving.
Never bothered with a sig line before, but here goes.
