The title of this diary is a line from the chorus of Better Days, by one of my favorite contemporary alt-pop-rock bands, the Goo Goo Dolls. I don’t think it would be possible to sum up how I feel about tonight any more completely or succinctly.
And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
just a chance that maybe we’ll find better days.Cause I don’t need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire or love or empty things
Just a chance that maybe we’ll find better days.
— Goo Goo Dolls, Better Days
For the first time in years, I am truly hopeful. Hopeful that things are turning around. Hopeful that people are waking up. Hopeful that, after 6 years of falling backward, we can begin to move forward again.
But don’t doubt for a second, the most important word up there in that title is Begins. For if we look at tonight in any other way, any victory we may achieve will be fleeting and shallow. We have gained a foothold in our fall, nothing more. And now we must being to climb.
When the sun rises tomorrow, it will be the dawning of a new day. Let us continue to make sure that corruption and injustice are in full light. Let us not tire in the work of pushing ever harder for our ideals.
Let’s make tomorrow our day.
for hope.
and courage. Because I think it’s going to take an awful lot of courage to get things done regardless of the outcome.
Great song… every time I hear it, it makes me cry.
The Goo Goo Dolls played this song live outside the Superdome before the first Saints home game this year. While playing a football game is certainly not the most important part of reconstructing a city, I have to admit it was an emotional moment.
It’s a powerful song. The ‘Dolls have helped me through many a tough time.
reminds me of my son. Some of us may be “broken” but my love for him isn’t.
Here’s to hope… and courage. Have a good day emjw.
From your fingertips to FSM’s noodly eyestalks.
to clean up the shit this misAdministration and their rubber stamp Congress has produced.
Tomorrow is just the beginning, as we form our work squads so we can start shoveling in January (when the new Congress is sworn in).
My beloved imaginary 2nd husband, Keith Olbermann, put it best last night:
Those vaunted Founding Fathers of ours have been so quoted up, that they appear as marble statues: like the chiseled guards of China, or the faces on Mount Rushmore. But in fact they were practical people and the thing they obviously feared most was a government of men and not laws.
They provided the checks and balances for a reason.
No one man could run the government the way he saw fit — unless he, at the least, took into consideration what those he governed saw.
A House of Representatives would be the people’s eyes.
A Senate would be the corrective force on that House.
An executive would do the work, and hold the Constitution to his chest like his child.
A Supreme Court would oversee it all.
Checks and balances.
Where did that go, Mr. Bush?
And what price did we pay because we have let it go?
Read and watch the whole thing here.
Damn, I’ve always had a thing for men with big…errr, ahem, brains…
Got to get out of here and head to the polls…catch you folks on the flipside…
I can’t wait to get home tonight and watch Keith’s election night coverage.
If the results start taking an improbable turn to the right, you know he sure as hell isn’t going to keep quiet about it.
had MSNBC’s coverage (with Olbermann and Chris “Tweety” Matthews) might be the “most entertaining”. Definitely must-see TV…
Oh, great line from Joe Freakin’ Scarborough of all people; talking about election “irregularities” and the need for a paper receipt on the machines, he turns to Pat Buchannon (on the panel) and says, “You can’t even blame the Mexicans or the gays for that, Pat…” I almost fell off my couch howling… 😉
So beautifully put ej. We all have to remember that winning a majority in either and/or both tonight is not a miracle fix but the beginning as you said. We must stay focused and vigilant so that these power grubbing, war profiteering corrupt creeps can never take us in the wrong direction again. Enough is enough. Keep up the great work! I love your presence here.
Thanks aloha!
The 50 state strategy is the engine that we can use to drive these criminals out of power and back under their rocks, and our efforts are the fuel.
Bless Howard Dean for seeing that right out of the shoot!
Keep Hope Alive! Keep Hope Alive!
Saw Jesse when I was a boy. Will never forget him screaming this.
Keep Hope Alive!
Thanks E, for the reminder of things yet to come. I love the way you think! hugs and hope all is well for you and friend.
Thanks Brenda! Things are great, but we’re both busier than we want to be right now. Should calm down soon. Hugs back atcha!
Thank you for the inspiration–beautifully stated.
That’s what I woke up singing. And sang and sang–and then I voted of course.
