here’s Bush’s supposed attempt at ‘bipartisanship’: AP/Yahoo
The Bush administration, trying to push through judicial nominations before Republicans lose control of the Senate, resubmitted six nominees deemed by Democrats too conservative for the federal bench.
Five nominees were the subject of an angry exchange in August when Democrats said their selection was a sop to the president’s conservative base…
“Democrats have asked the president to be bipartisan, but this is a clear slap in the face at our request,” said Sen. Charles Schumer (news, bio, voting record), D-N.Y., a member of the Judiciary Committee. “For the sake of the country, we hope that this is an aberration because the president feels he must placate his hard-right base, rather than an indication of things to come.”
Sen. Jon Cornyn, R-Texas, a vocal backer of many of Bush’s judicial picks, said he thought it would be “very tough” to get the nominees through the Senate during the lame-duck session. But, he added, “Hope springs eternal.”
Cornyn said judicial nominees will test the Democrats’ stated desire to run the Senate with greater bipartisanship.
So, if the Dems try to exert any oversight, the little boy preznit is going to whine they aren’t bipartisan enough. We just want him to take his toys and go home.
Apparently Junior isn’t THAT miffed at Karl. He’s obviously still taking his bad advice. This election was a blowout for us because people are watching. This would be a good time to drop the histrionics and honestly make a few decisions for the country, not for republican politics. They are so transparent even a 10 year old could see through. I figure that they want to stir up some pre-emptive rancor. That way, when the Dems actually start oversight, these morons think it will shine a bad light on us. Won’t work. I am Teflon you are glue… bounces off me and sticks on YOU. Junior can take his suppository judges and stick ’em.
They had Ted Koppel on this morning, giving his opinion on Iraq. It was bleak…he pointed out that the Iraq war has “done for Iran what they couldn’t do for themselves”, by making Iran the major player in the area, and that when we the US pulls out, they will be moving right in to Iraq.
When asked what he thought Iraq would look like in a year or 2, he said that it would be better if we stayed until they had some governemental structure so that the civil war that’s already going on doesn’t get much worse, but that either way, we aren’t going to like the results.
Oh, they’ll stay the course until ’08, Dems will win the White House and they’ll try to blame Iraq on the Democrats. In the meantime, no matter what anyone recommends, no matter what is done, Iraq will probably get worse.
I caught part of Abezaid’s performance yesterday and could just see Rummy standing behind him with his arms folded. Abezaid will never tell the truth, he’s Rummy’s parrot and is only allowed a few phrases that all add up to one: “Stay the course, stay the course… Polly want some kickbacks… AAACK!”
While his fellow incoming freshman were attending a private White House reception with President Bush Monday night, Rep.-elect Keith Ellison had what he considered a more important appointment to keep.
“I went to the AFL-CIO reception, because I wanted to meet and greet leaders of labor, and get to know them,” Ellison, D-Minn., said in an interview during a break from freshman orientation Tuesday. “Those are the people who I came here to support.”
“It wasn’t even a close call,” added Ellison, who is replacing the retiring Rep. Martin Sabo, a Democrat. “Maybe one day I’ll get to meet the president. He’s the president, and I respect him in his role as the president, but I have exceedingly sharp differences with him on a policy level.”
Ellison is one of four new lawmakers who will represent Minnesota next year. He’ll be the first black lawmaker from Minnesota, and the first Muslim to ever serve in Congress.
I read yesterday that Glen Beck, one of CNN’s pet wingers that they try to pass off as newspeople, made a remark that Kieth Ellison has to prove that he’s not working for the enemy!!!!! I think Beck should prove he’s got a measurable IQ.
I thought Bill O’Reilly was pretty impressive with some of the things he cooked up “War on Christmas” and such. The stuff that Beck cooks up though, Holy Shit…..there are so many variables in his theories it’s like a three ring circus. I wish my old Algebra teacher would have allowed me to get away with coming to my solutions like that, it would have made things so much easier.
Strategy document calls for extra 20,000 troops, aid for Iraqi army and regional summit
President George Bush has told senior advisers that the US and its allies must make “a last big push” to win the war in Iraq and that instead of beginning a troop withdrawal next year, he may increase US forces by up to 20,000 soldiers, according to sources familiar with the administration’s internal deliberations.
Mr Bush’s refusal to give ground, coming in the teeth of growing calls in the US and Britain for a radical rethink or a swift exit, is having a decisive impact on the policy review being conducted by the Iraq Study Group chaired by Bush family loyalist James Baker, the sources said.
The American people have made it clear they want out of Iraq, and the administration’s response is to ramp up. Were are they getting these 20,000 soldiers? And isn’t Afghanistan falling apaprt at the seams as well?
I think they’ve been living in Orwell-land too long.
“Any attempt to send more troops to Iraq would, “at the moment, threaten to break our nation’s all-volunteer Army and undermine our national security.”
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s president, Joseph Kabila, was formally declared the winner of the first presidential election since independence yesterday but the opposition described the result as a provocation and said “the people will resist this fraud”.
Congo’s election commission said Mr Kabila, 35, won 58.05% of the vote against his only opponent, Jean-Pierre Bemba, a former rebel warlord. The commission rejected opposition claims of widespread fraud and international observers said the election was largely fair.
D.C. Moves to Become Pioneer In Forcing ‘Green’ Construction
The District is poised to become the first major city in the country to require that private developers build environmentally friendly projects that incorporate energy-saving measures.
By 2012, most large construction in the city — commercial and city-funded residential — would have to meet the standards, if the D.C. Council gives final approval to a new bill next month.
The era of “green buildings” would include devices such as low-flow shower heads and recycled materials and would require designing passageways that encourage walking, choosing drought-tolerant plants and improving air quality by reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling.
This is good news. Now if all the Federal buildings had to conform to the regulations of the elected government of DC, that would be even better. Which is a short trip to the radical notion that the citizens of the nation’s capitol should be represented in the Federal Govt. But Green buildings is still good news.
Brits face tax war on 4 x 4. Owners of 4×4 vehicles — the so-called Chelsea Tractors — will pay £25 (about $ 50 ) a day for the privilege of driving in London under plans announced yesterday by the city’s mayor.
Also related, there’s in the EU a proposal of taxing products imported from countries who snub the Kyoto treaty.
London has enacted strict fees for driving in the city in an effort to cut down on the appalling traffic mess. This sounds like another tough move in that direction. Besides, you’ve got to be a nutter to drive a Chelsea Tractor in the Big Smoke.
Agent Orange Harmed Sexual Health of Male Vietnam Vets
DALLAS, Texas, November 15, 2006 (ENS) – A toxic chemical contained in the herbicide Agent Orange affects male reproductive health by limiting the growth of the prostate gland and lowering testosterone levels, researchers have found in a study of more than 2,000 Vietnam War Air Force veterans.
Published in the November issue of the journal “Environmental Health Perspectives,” the study indicates that exposure to TCDD, the most toxic of the dioxin family of chemicals contained in Agent Orange, may disturb the male endocrine and reproductive systems in several ways.
“Until now, we did not have very good evidence whether or not dioxins affect the human reproductive system,” said Dr. Amit Gupta, a urologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the study’s lead author.
“Now we know that there is a link between dioxins and the human prostate leading us to speculate that dioxins might be decreasing the growth of the prostate in humans like they do in animals,” he said.
Agent Orange is an herbicide that was developed for military use in Vietnam to deny cover and concealment to enemies of the United States and its allies.
Embracing a technology that has unnerved media and telecommunications companies, a major European wireless provider will let customers watch their home cable TV on a cell phone if they also have a device called the Slingbox back at the house.
3 Group will launch the new service in Britain first, starting Dec. 1, followed by three more of its 11 markets in early 2007, the wireless company announced Thursday.
Two new handsets running on 3’s next-generation wireless network will feature the Sling application, which customers can use to watch any channel available on their cable TV at home. The phones also can be used to control a digital video recorder at home, pausing and rewinding live television, playing previously recorded shows, or setting up the DVR to record a program..[.]

The rubber-stamping days better be over.

You must’ve been up early
I don’t think anybody really cares at this point, and with his approval rating nobody is going to care any time soon 🙂
well not exactly. In Israel, they do care and are grateful….there’s the go ahead to build the ‘Bush Center’
“freedom will be a worthy focus.” Now, if only that could extend to the Palestinians. huh.
Again, I predict sometime in the future, Bush and Olmert will be neighbhors, with adjoining cells for war crimes.
one is snubbing Boy George already: NBC
Good for him.

Ellison is working for the enemy…you know, the people of Minnesota and of the United States.

Bush’s “last big push” means to me. It isn’t fitting for genteel ladies to type such things let alone think them.
a Draft. They’ve already been taking grannies and granpapas – over 50s.
20,000 is a nice soundbite, the ‘win we must’ crowd are in serious denial.
Gen. John Abizaid gave McCain a smackdown yesterday
“Any attempt to send more troops to Iraq would, “at the moment, threaten to break our nation’s all-volunteer Army and undermine our national security.”

A sop to John McCain? Trying to set up his Presidential run?

yes, a day! That’s why, ‘the park it”
