Lovely way to wake up.
See you all when I’m juiced again.
Have a good trip SN.
Sorry about the power being out!!!! Sending warm thoughts your way!!!
the power is back — though the way the wind continues to roar, it wouldn’t surprise me to have it go out again.
Did you have bad weather, too?
no the weather turned out okay, but I am having a slight reaction to the flu shot. Fever and light flu symptoms. I came home early yesterday and will most likely stay home today.
So far other than buckets and buckets of rain and the howling wind, we’ve escaped, too. We might have some snow later but no more than an inch.
Sorry you aren’t feeling well — the only time I took a flu shot, I had a 101 fever for three days so I’ve never taken another one.
we have electric heat here…we just finally went ahead and turned the heater on.
Best of luck to you and JimF with the power (or lack of same)…
Morning Cali Scribe!!!
Good morning all.
I see the cafe had a record early opening this morning.
The weather is weird – 66 deg this morning.
I couldn’t shut down the system without putting up a cafe first. I was really surprised to get power back so quickly.
Good morning.
Ok, even though the effexor helps me to not be phobic about flying anymore, I still don’t like the thought of taking off in high winds, flying around a bunch of severe thunderstorms, and landing in thunderstorms and high winds. Call me crazy. And give me a stiff drink.
What is that white stuff in the photo? It’s luminous.
I call them frost curls but I don’t know if there is a real name for them. It’s frost that starts out curling around a leaf or stalk and them builds on itself. They make all kinds of interesting shapes.
So are you hoping the flight is cancelled?
No, I’m hoping that somehow I just survive the flight.
Those frost curls are amazing.
I take pictures pretty much whenever I find them. You have to get them in the early morning since they don’t last long so a lot of the pictures don’t come out because of low light (I’m too lazy to walk with a tripod) but I’ve got a few more that are probably good enough to post. I’ll wait till you get back to post another one.
What time are you supposed to get into Cleveland?
RIght at 4 PM. I’m most concerned about the winds.
The dogs and I will be sending out good vibes that will cushion your landing.
I hope the winds die down by them. It’s 40 here but if you go outside if feels like 20.
I guess that means I should probably bring socks. 🙂
we’re supposed to have lows in the teens by Sunday.
I’ve seen web pages of these photos before. They can be downright stunning.
Just rain and warm air here in North Carolina this morning. Too bad we had that week of sub-freezing nights that killed off all the mums.
Hey Robert, are you in the triangle? Raleigh here.
Chapel Hill.
Yeah, they are really nifty. Did you happen to notice if the web pages had a “proper” name for them?
It was a random link, long ago.
From good ole’ Caltech.
Frost flowers and frost hoars
I’m really glad to know the proper name and a little bit about the phenomenon.
EXCELLENT LINK
Even though I was born in & lived in a very cold climate, I had never seen this form of frost.
I am envious of Andi`s having even seen it in person.
SN! If it feels very wrong to take this flight, for the sake of all that’s luscious & lovely, don’t do it. Postpone, darn it! No need to be heroic.
Mornin’ folks. Up early to study for an exam in a couple hours.
I was of the stay up late and study persuasion. Mornings are for vegging out.
Good morning all! Still unseasonably warm here. Gotta run.
Iraq study group studied and studied and studied and flunked. Must do laundry………sometime….today I suppose.
power is gone again as predicted.
Ta.
I’m betting (again) that you’ll be with us again soon, Andi.
Amazing picture up above, btw! Unlike anything I’ve seen personally.
I am back again but the wind is still going furiously so it could easily go again. There are limbs down all over the place.
And wood-heating season officially started today.
On the pic — did you see bob p’s link above that explains what they are. Interesting that it says the come from wood but we mostly see them on leaves and stalks.
Haven’t checked the link yet, but I sure will!
Do hope your on-again-off-again power remains on this time. I always found that kind of stuff a bit unsettling — though for us, it was more often a brief flickering, then out for 12 -48 hours.
I’m guessing you saw some ice on the limbs & lines?
No ice, just wind, lots and lots of really strong wind.
I’m not used to getting the power back so quickly, usually 6 hours is a really response. I guess it was something that the local guy assigned to this area could fix on his own.
Excellent.
Frankly, I’ve always been terrifically grateful to those folks — considering what types of conditions they’re generally working in.
Let’s hope your guy can relax for a while.
Went over & had a look at the Caltech link. Great, great stuff! Very cool(ing).
I was inspired to re-post this image of some pretty impressive window frost — maybe you remember it. The structure spread over an entire 6′ x 2′ window.
‘Course, the intricate clarity’s lost somewhat — but I’m inspired by the images I’ve seen today (including yours) to procure a better camera at some point after I’m home again.
You should think about shopping for a camera while you’re still in Florida since I’m sure there are lots of places to shop for good deals.
Yes — I bought my first one here, actually.
Now, though, I’ve got to put any available financial resources into getting home & taking care of necessities (like wheels). Then I’ll see where I can set up my little photo shop.
I have a definite sense that SN’s flight isn’t going to come off, somehow. Definite hassles in store.
If our weather is any indication, I’d agree — thepower just went out again.
today’s clammyc’s birthday!
to clammyc!
psst…put this on the front page where it belongs. 🙂
Those frost flowers are lovely-we don’t get anything like that here in Cascadia. Good morning all, stay warm and stay away from people spreading germs about. I feel much better although am congested but no feverish feelings like yesterday. My herbalist housemate sacrificed an entire echinacea plant (roots) and boiled it up for us to drink-it seems to have worked.
Saw a hilarious film (a food bank benefit) from the ’60’s by Otto Preminger called Skidoo in which Jackie Gleason takes LSD and then he and some others give it to everyone in the prison they’re in and escape. Groucho Marx plays a sinister mobster named God and there are other stars of the era: Frankie Avalon, Burgess Meredith, Ptere Lawford, Frank Gorshin, Carol Channing. It’s said they all all really did go trippin’ during the making of the film. It’s not on DVD or video although I hear there are clips on youtube. And if you haven’t seen the Communist Manifestoon on youtube, please take a look-really funny and scary at the same time.
Hey, ‘soup! So glad you’ve been helped by those botanical blessings. Your housemate definitely knows what’s up — you’ve gotten the full benefit of the plant’s living medicine.
If there are other echinacea plants around, you can keep your immune system in shape just by chewing on the leaves occasionally. It’s worked for me.
Skidoo seems equally amazing, IMHO.
Nice to know there’s something we have here in the midwest that you don’t have in the northwest. 🙂
Glad you’re feeling better.
experience. I remember when I felt like prey in my own homeland and some of that horror and despair is beginning to lift. I have stumbled upon something that I have missed these past few years as America has grown angry and divisive. I miss when the spark in my eye would so easily and freely acknowledge the spark in anothers eye and see another life. I miss when people embraced each other in that acknowledgment and a person was immediately considered of importance because we are here. Some how we have all come to be here in this place together. I sat and spoke to another Army spouse/mother a few days back and we realized we had vast areas of sameness, really vast areas. When she realized though that I want our husband’s out of Iraq I experienced almost a total withdrawl of her selfness between the two of us. I saw her the next day and she could not look into my eyes. I see that she feels very right about her position but I also see a giant weariness that engulfs her body as she walks down the sidewalk. She is very tired and depleted but she fights fights fights acknowledging it. I no longer have the anger at other military persons cheering the Iraq War on that I used to. I see how depleted they have been made cheering on the insane and sacrificing for the secret agendas and lies and they are very weary now. More truth raises its head every day now and running is harder for them. They are so tired and many of them don’t know how to process what has happened and will lose a portion of their Higher Power that has feet of clay and that will be hard. I want to find them a blanket and cup of tea, a daybed in filtered sunlight and as the horror of what they have endured and survived settles in we must talk of REAL things now and define the mystical shadows and the conjuring of men desiring power telling tall tales. We must talk about how we will all really live real lives now in the real world. I wanted to write this down some place before it slips easily from my thoughts and is replaced by noticing that we need more laundry soap.
Thank you for sharing this with us, MT.
IMHO, the spirit of compassion exists despite the abilities of others to experience it — either in others or in themselves, for themselves.
The important thing is that it continues to live within those who carry it. We step back & let others find their way into its grace, if they will. This requires their openness, an abandonment of their defenses — which, under the type of duress so many now deal with, is a ‘weakness’ that must be resisted.
It’s only a matter of time until exhaustion & isolation gives way & what’s sustained these things becomes as weak as a clay wall under constant seige.
Collectively, I don’t believe we’ve been readied for the uses made of us by this administration — the complete perversion of our honor, our willingness to sacrifice, our nationhood, our collective humanity. When we, as individuals, wake to the horrible truth (as so many already have), our wrath against those who’ve perpetrated these criminal obscenities holds the immense power of righteousness.
The sleeping giants within us arise, day by day, in their turn — or they remain chained within us, darkly, weakening & twisting our spirits. The choice becomes inevitable.
The already awakened remain vigilant; wakeful compassion awaits the change.
Hurray. Our holiday party tonight has been postponed!
my power just went off for the 4th time since 2:20 a.m. and I’m in a very, very bad mood. So far the longest it has stayed on is 2 hours; the shortest 30 minutes.
Of course, I really shouldn’t be burning up my laptop battery screwing around. I should be doing work instead but it’s hard to work when you’re royally pissed at life, the universe, and everything.
That’s why it’s very, very important to burn up your laptop battery to screw around.
You’re probably right but I’ll give in to guilt in a few minutes and go work.
I hope your power company guy doesn’t ring your doorbell in the next hour — he may never be seen again 🙂
I heard you have high winds in Indiana today? But no ice? Did you get snow?
we don’t have a doorbell .
(besides, you don’t need a doorbell when you have dogs).
Buckets of rain, howling winds, no ice and just a skim of snow so far. Of course, all the standing rain is starting to freeze so it’s really slick out.
Hurrah! Thank Gaia.
and since i’ve been bad lately, there are multiple Bud photos for today.
.. to brighten your day as it’s brightened mine. Or: life with a woman of 78 who’ll always be 56.
We’ll call her M.
M: Where’s that salad dressing I just bought?
WW: Look in the refrigerator door.
M: It’s not in there.
WW: Okay, look in the cabinet.
M: What?
WW: Look in the cabinet.
M: What?
WW: The cabinet. Look in the cabinet.
M: It’s not in the cabinet. I can’t imagine where it went.
WW: I’ll find it. .. Here it is. In the refrigerator door.
M: Ha, ha! I told you it wasn’t in the cabinet!
Yes, Andi, I will take your power outs, if you take my mother.
got my own version — an 85 year-old very Jewish mother.
okay I’ve got to preserve my laptop battery.
Later.
Hope so!
It’s been quite a week, what with the nasty winter storm and all. How is everyone?
