How are you doing with the weather up there?
It was a nice day, a little chilly but not bitter. I did Christmas shopping in small spurts of 1/2 hour here and there today and in between came home and put up a Christmas tree. I’m not quite finished, but I’m kind of pooped.
Here at the house I don’t put up a tree. I have a s-i-l who loves to do that stuff. I don’t do any Xmas shopping either. I’ve always felt it’s better to receive than give. š
I meant to ask. Did anyone find out how Psi did on his exams?
He said he did fine on the ones he had been graded on. He’s in Florida for the weekend – no, not having fun. Working for his stepfather I think he said.
Geeze he needs to be down in the Bahamas letting off steam and enjoying himself.

We’re finally heading out shortly — hitting Penney’s to pick up a shirt for me and socks for the homeless drop-in center (when it’s wet they really appreciate having clean dry socks for the clients), then dinner at TGI Friday’s (they’ve got some good non-alcoholic drinks IIRC). Been basically taking it slow today — will get back into the swing of things next week…

No. We decided against it after all. My biggest concern is that we’ll at my m-i-l’s for Christmas. That’s 5 days with 8 wired cats, 6 of whom are young enough to cause real damage. Plus the nice neighbor lady who feeds our cats and cleans the boxes while we’re gone would have to water the tree.

You know I’ve never not liked fruit cake. Of course the last one I remember eating was my Grandmothers and everything she ever cooked was good.
My mother makes a cake that is a type of fruitcake that is fabulous. It is called a friendship cake and taste out of this world!!!!
Speaking of menorahs, my mother makes something called a “Jewish Apple Cake” that is very tasty. I think the recipe calls for circumcised apples.

Happy Chanukah
I gave my antique menorahs away when I broke up with a boyfriend years ago. LOL
I like the old menorah’s better than the modern one. When I was a kid we had a huge silver one with lions on it.
I bought 3 antique menorahs many years ago when a bf parents announced theyw ere coming for hanukkah. It was one of the years when hanukkah & christmas were at the same time. I took all t5he christmas stuff out of the dining room and redorated it completely. I even had a rabi teach me some of the prayers and give me instructions about kosher kitchens. The last night of hanukkah I gave one of the menorahs to his mother even though she hated my guts. LOL One of the ones I had was a huge one that was silver with lions at the base and the star of David.
That sounds almost exactly like the one we had when I was kid.
I was living in SF at the time and went up to the Russian hill area where the Jewish community center is and went to the antique stores. They always had incredible ones. The rabi also helped me by telling me which stores were the best for finding that type of thing. He thought at first I was converting and then when I explained why I was doing all of it, he was even more helpful. He thought accepting each other’s cultures was important. I guess I was lucky and found a liberal rabi. LOL I know there are quite a few of them but I know that some would never have helped me at all… sort of like the bible thumping preachers we have. LOL
The modern ones make me think of getting stoned instead of tradition. LOL
Seems like many of the modern ones are so devoid of any symbols remotely Jewish that they look like stripped down candleabras.
and ugly to boot. Some of the modern ones look like building blocks glued together.
I saw a collection of Judeica at and antique mall a few years back. The silver menorahs were stunning. They where from a time when religious symbols and artistic expression merged. They were also from wealthy families, of course.

The Maccabee’s , the oil jar. All the Sunday school lessons are coming back to me now.
The reason the oil had to last 8 days was the process took that long to make new that was fitting for the temple.
The Jewish people never seem to have oil.

I bet your Mom is a hoot!!!! I will say I am lucky that even growing up in a small town in N.C. I was able to experience a lot of different cultures and religions. Also any that were not in town, I was able to learn about if I wanted to. I have always been curious and wanted to know a little about everything.
Some days she’s a hoot, other days … ah well.

I just got a call from a friend of mine and he got a really good deal on tickets for fly to FL. He and the family are waiting for the shuttle launch. He called me to check up on the NASA web site to see if anything had changed.
He told me to go outside and check to see if I could see anything. I doubt it, but I’m going to give it a try.

Nope he got tickets for $75 from MI to FL. He has two kids and he wanted them to see it. Plus his sister lives there, so no hotel. He’s always finding great deals for travel. Don’t know how he does it.
