The headpiece is called a “gutra.” I thought I remembered the robe being called a “thob,” but in an article on Kuwaiti culture I found it says the thob is basically a woman’s overdress. Could be that the usage of the word is slightly different between Kuwait and the oil patch of easter Saudi Arabia (Dhahran-Ras Tanura-Khobar area).
The bigger question is: How can you wear red check after Labor Day?

Is there any significance to the pattern on the headgear? Like how the Scots wore / wear their clan tartan on their kilts?
I don’t think so. Granted, I’m remembering from almost 30 years ago, but I seem to remember that pretty much all the gutras for sale in the markets in and around al-Khobar (eastern Saudi Arabia) used a houndstooth check pattern. It could be that that’s the local pattern for that part of the Gulf, but I honestly can’t remember any other pattern in pictures and the like (I think even the King’s portraits showed him wearing the houndstooth pattern).
I think the middle eastern wear is authentic & should not be ridiculed. I didn`t know there were any moose in Dubai, though.

I read the Reid interview, a good interview indeed. Reid’s answers give me confidence in his leadership. I think the country will see that Democrats will handle responsibility in ways that provide and protect every one of us citizens.

If the likes of Pat Buchanan and Bill Bennett can be welcomed by the bigtime corporate media, why not Delay? He likely sees a bright future as a pundit – no way he thinks he’ll go down for what he’s done. If he stays out of prison, he’s probably right, too.

Actually, when I was in Saudi Arabia the locals would often find great amusement in expats putting on native robes and headgear. They didn’t seem to mind at all.

I’ve been saying for years that I think American men should switch to flowing robes. I’m tired of shirts that don’t fit right, ties that choke you, etc. I think I need to get one of those robes for Christmas.
