If I were Bush I would offer the U.N. Ambassador spot to Joe Lieberman. But if I were Joe Lieberman, I wouldn’t take the job.
Whatever Joe’s flaws he must see that Bush is a hopeless fool.
…as Bush rethinks his strategy in Iraq and approaches one of the most fateful moments of his presidency, he confronts difficult questions: At what point does determination to a cause become self-defeating folly? Can he change direction in a meaningful way without sacrificing principle?
If Joe needs an answer to those questions, he can look to Colin Powell’s former chief-of-staff.
“I just don’t believe that this president, with this vice president whispering in his ear every moment, is oriented to change,” said retired Col. Larry Wilkerson, who was chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin L. Powell in Bush’s first term. “And even if he were, I don’t believe his administration is capable of implementing change.”
Why trade a fresh six year Senate term in for a two-year gig representing this failed Presidency before the United Nations? Lieberman is too much of an egomaniac to make that kind of miscalculation.
Whatever Joe’s flaws he must see that Bush is a hopeless fool.
Let’s hope. Joe does have a problem recognizing reality sometimes.
Lieberman would be less welcomed at the UN than Bolton.
In any case a ‘flip the Senate’ move would be seen as helping Bush steal the November elections, Again.
In that regard, would we then see any republican go independent such as senator snow. I do feel that the republicans are getting scared enough now that they have seen what the American public is demanding through this last election and they want to keep their job. I do not feel that bush is smart enough to do the right thing for the good of all. He is smart enough to do what is good for bush and only bush. Just look at the lackey he just appointed to the AK circuit court –if I have that position right– it is yet another recess appointment/payback for doing the dirty business for bush in FL in 2000. The way I hear it is that both the dem and rep senators from that state were very surprised as to this move. I have said this before and I really think it is how Lieberman thinks. He now knows that the dems will win in 08 and huge and he does not want to be on a loosing side of politics for his own sinister reasons. He is a sly and crooked old fox. He has too many of the AIPAC to please..They, after all, are who put him where he is today. I think they need to get rid of all the pac’s! That would help rid us clearly of the Israeli gov. hand in our gov. and further diminish our standing in the UN. I really do hate this way of politics.
We really must change our policies in order to change the course of the way the world is developing the wars and reasons for wars…to change the course of poverty and the cause of poverty….to change the course of disease and that which causes disease…..that change that is needed for peace and that which would prevent peace……..so fourth and so on. Our own policies are what is the hindrance for our own good and standing in the world. Bill Richardson is a good one who will stand a good chance to institute this reasoning with the diplomatic course in reasoning. I do think the politicians do understand this..If they do not, then they all deserve to be fired…every last one of them,,,,,,,period!

we are so weakened in our standing worldwide, it’s gonna take a lot of hard work to repair the damage by BushCheney..
Bush picks Joe. Joe accepts. Senate rejects confirmation. Joe stuck. What does Joe do then?
In this scenario it seems to me the democrats are screwed whether they confirm him or not. Can you picture the whiny temper tantrum Lieberman would make against them if they didn’t confirm him? Like it or not, Lieberman is in a position to dictate his own agenda.
That would be far too funny! but Joe is a master at keeping all his options open.
He wouldn’t accept the offer, I don’t think. What would all his pharmaceutical lobbyists do?
I think you’ve hit it on the head there.
About the only Bush is good at is frat-boy ego-manipulation.
that Joe can see that Bush is a hopeless fool. I WILL accept that Joe is enough of a pragmatist and would see no good coming from a two year stint at the UN.
I doubt it, for the following reason. It’s two years to 2008, and the odds of a Republican Presidency can’t be better than 35 percent right now. Joe quits his Senatorial post for at most two years in New York? He’s 65 and in apparently good health, and so has at least a dozen years of Senatorship ahead of him (in the unlikely event he gets re-elected). So why should he give all this up for a seat at the UN, especially as there is no guarantee the Republican governor of CT would actually nominate a Republican (except maybe Weicker) to the post?
I don’t see it happening. It doesn’t make any sense. But then, neither did invading Iraq.
