I thought my beloved Broncos getting a miracle win against the Bengals last night would be the best gift I received, but then my son gave me this calendar, and it was an even better present. So, what was your favorite gift to give or receive this Christmas?

Merry Christmas Steven,
The best gifts I got were a Stevie Ray Vaughan live in Austin dvd from my son Justin, a new NY Giants mug from daughter Sarah, and a manly little Teddy bear from daughter Allie :o)
Sad to hear about James Brown though.
Peace
Yes, it was. A classic performer. A lot of the greats dying recently. Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, and now James Brown.
My brother sent me the same calendar. If I’m thinking about my material gifts, I love my new jean jacket. Otherwise, I loved watching Andrew play with his new toys and give gifts to Daddy, Nan, and his uncle.
First, a little background: my husband gave up a great deal to move back to Colorado and help take care of my folks. He’s the unsung hero, going to work every day, taking on all the little extras to make our lives more comfortable.
This year my daughter was able to go to school, and in my part time job I was able to save enough to get him (almost) a motercycle. He’s wanted one for 10 years but something else has always come up and he’s quietly faded that wish into the background. So it’s a little bike, and something like this will never happen again, but he has one.
That’s a womderful story. Just tell him to be careful. I had a bike when I was back in law school and was hit by a drunk driver who made a left turn in front of me, probably because her blurred perception couldn’t pick out the small head on view of a motorcycle.
Just a word to the wise. People in cars don’t always do a good job watching out for bike riders with whom they share the road. They follow too close, cut you off unexpectedly, and as in my case turn into you because they’re mind doesn’t register a bike when it’s checking for oncoming traffic.
My daughters offered me a foam-rubber GW Bush I can squeeze in my hand to help me destress. It’s named “Smush Bush”
The tag even says:”A portion of the proceeds willbe used to support progressive causes and candidates”!
The Giants’ self-immolation.
A team just FULL of of BushCo-like poseurs finally got impeached.
As above, so below?
Let us pray.
Sports as prophecy.

The unhyped.
Winning on merit and teamwork.
Versus the hyped.
Losing on ego and bullshit.
So it goes.
I hope.
I feel bad for real athletes and coaches on jive teams. (Relatively bad. I mean…NONE of ’em are exactly scuffling.)
Joe Torre.
Plaxico Burris.
Derek Jeter.
Others.
But I root on a socio-poitical level.
Go JETS!!!

(though I let the spouse open his aftershave/cologne last night so he can wear some today to the folks) — I know one gift will be late, as the spouse couldn’t find it yesterday; Watchdogs of Democracy? by Helen Thomas was on my request list. Probably my favorite gift I’m giving is the new watch I got for him — he just mentioned yesterday that he’s going to have to get a new one after the holidays because the Velcro band is wearing out (he loves the cloth band with Velcro as it’s more comfortable when he’s driving the bus and the sun is shining through the driver’s window). Second favorite is the pair of dolphin earrings I bought at the Mirage in Lost Wages for my mom-in-law this month — they’re quite lovely.
But my favorite gift of all arrived quite early, November 7 as a matter of fact… 😉
I got a new battery for my laptop. That’s pretty kewl.
Other than a couple of little things in the office, I didn’t get any gifts. I did enjoy giving the boran2boy his Chanukah gifts, including an mp3 player.
Watching my 2-year-old son open presents has been best this year (“I like more train tracks, please!” – almost everything he opened was train-related LOL). I did get some new music and was thrilled about that – the new Tom Waits 3 CD set, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sonic Youth. I will have to kick the guy off the computer so I can put them on my iPod.
And now the 2-year-old is napping after a toy and chocolate wonderland morning marathon…ah, nice.
A flock of chicks. No, not for me. It has be come a tradition for Tom to make a donation to Heiffer International in my name.
We also treated ourselves to an amazing lamp made of Japanese paper and dried flowers.
.
Interesting!
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
Not exactly. More free form. The artist ties bunches of twigs or stems together to make a framework and fills in the space with the paper. I’m not sure what flowers were used; looks like echinacea or maybe galinderia.
I looked to see if the artist had a website so I could show you but no luck.
Anyway, it is fun and lovely.
One of my daughters, knowing that I’ve got a Worst.President.Ever bumper sticker gave me one of these calendars; it’s already hanging in my office.
