I grew up with Harry Chapin instead of TV. I’ve been missing him a lot lately and found this song remarkably similar to the current situation.
Think of me what you will, but Harry was pure. He died a year after Lennon. The year peace and compassion was overtaken by the Ronnie revolution.
Please help save our planet. I beg you.
Peace… and reality… it’s all we’ve got left.
Do what you do.
Do what you do.The Smoke Witch says – Wahoo!
And the Wise Man says – Me too!
And the Guru says – Wazoo!
So do what you doThe priests stand in their pulpits
The Pope sits on his throne
The parishes are empty
And the choirboys on their own
Until the Second Coming
Yes, They’re leaving us alone
And God in his Heaven
Has decided to keep mum
Because He’s just another traveller
On the Road to Kingdom Come. And all is said and done, he’s just another one.
Pity Mr. President
He can’t do a thing
He says everywhere he went
We’ve tried to make him sing
Our lonely White House resident
Says we should have made him King
Maybe then he could have saved us
From the truth we were hiding from
But he’s just another traveller
On the Road to Kingdom Come. And all is said and done.
He was just another one.
The General’s in his game room
But his Soldier won’t salute
Ever since he was promoted
He can’t pop his chute
His shrink says he is paranoid
‘Bout communistic roots
So unfurl the flag boys
Start beating his drum
We’ve got to get another straggler
On the Road to Kingdom Come. When all is said and done, he was just another one.
Yes, another one.And the Smoke Witch says – Wahoo!
And the Wise Man says – Me too!
And the Guru says – Wazoo!
So do what you do!Woah! The lead Singers raucous
As he screams out the truth
Then the band holds a caucus
And decides to sell their youth
Our Manager he’ll hawk us
As along as we’re uncouth
And we’ll call it revolution
But we’ll crank out Bubble Gum
‘Cause that’s the marching tune for travellers
On the Road to Kingdom Come. When all is said and done, we’re just some other ones
Grampa swung into the orgy
It was his last hope
He was dressed to the nines
In deodorant and Scope
He found himself a woman
She brought Vaseline and soap
Well it started out exciting
But it ended up ho hum
She said – I thought that you could take me
All the way to Kingdom Come. When all was said and done
You were just another one grandpaSo Billy sells hot sermons
And cold wars through the mails
While Mr. Big is selling out
His business never fails
King Kennedy like Chaucer’s
Chasing Canterbury Tales
And though the brain is still a virgin
The rest of me’s well done
Don’t you know we’re all just travellers
On the Road to Kingdom Come
I’m just another one
When all is said and done
Just another one.The Smoke Witch says – Wahoo!
And the Wise Man says – Me too!
And the Guru says – Wazoo!
So do what you do!
I’ve pissed a lot of people off here because of my inabiltity to not snark loudly. But I only do so because I fucking care about our planet, and my own life to be honest.
And also, because for a long time, I’ve felt like a second-class citizen here because I’m Canadian and “don’t get” the unique American…okay, I’ll leave it there for my own sake.
I know people here care, but I care too. And I… oh never mind. If you get me you get me, if not, sorry, no offense intended. Except for Chris… how dare he post moose without at least one line of the Canuckian National Anthem… meh. My friendly snark is getting rusty.
If you don’t care for me, cool. I probably don’t care for you either. Hell, I managed to get myself banned by the bastion of liberalism dkos for one comment last week. Unfortunately I can’t take my Plame diary with me… hmmm… I wonder if that violates their privacy policy as revisted… digressions, sorry. Anyway..). So if you don’t like me, think I’m a punk, a cunt, a flaming hockey lover, whatever. Let me have it. But don’t take it out on Harry. He’s much beloved, and one my rolemodel’s (I never said I lived up to it you know).
Nutshell – I just fear for our world and the people in it so much.
Hi Spider, cheer up – you’re not the only misfit around here, imagine living in the redstate backwoods and trying to hang out with a bunch of urban sophisticates. I’m always glad to see your name. Isn’t everyone welcome here as long as they’re not a prick?
Thanks for posting this song – it’s just what I needed this morning. Since you mention John, I’ll toss in another one:
People say we got it made
Dont they know were so afraid?
Isolation
We’re afraid to be alone
Everybody got to have a home
Isolation
Just a boy and a little girl
Trying to change the whole wide world
Isolation
The world is just a little town
Everybody trying to put us down
Isolation
I dont expect you to understand
After youve caused so much pain
But then again, youre not to blame
Youre just a human, a victim of the insane
Were afraid of everyone
Afraid of the sun
Isolation
The sun will never disappear
But the world may not have many years
Isolation
Thanks Alice, a most beautiful and haunting song. Good to ‘see’ you!
Hell, we love Canadians. In fact, I’m hoping that you guys invade the US and send Bush’s flabby ass to Gitmo for some of that nontorture they specialize in down there.
Personally, I welcome input from wherever it may come, spiderleaf. Just jump back in the pond, the water’s fine. 😉
What Boran2 said.
Speaking for myself anyway, I especially enjoy the input from our Canadian neighbo(u)rs. We always benfit from an outside perspective.
And thanks for the Harry Chapin. When I was a freshman in college, a friend tried to get me to go see Harry but I blew him off due to an upcoming chemistry exam, saying “Harry Chapin comes to Philly every year. I’ll catch him next time.” Only there wasn’t a next time. And the friend transferred to Johns Hopkins. So all I was left with the next year were more chemistry exams.
🙁
Some things you have to learn the hard way.
KP 🙂 Good to see you – I get most of my science news from you!
My mom did the same thing the year before he died and it’s made her so sad ever since. I just watched the video of his final concert over the holiday’s and burst into tears at the line in “Circle” when he says “and we’ll all get together again and again and again.” Except we wouldn’t.
His voice and lyrics still give me hope though. A true storyteller.
I’m afraid to say anything in response lest it is held against me if I ever try and cross the border again 🙂
perhaps on or around January 27th? 😉
Lemme see if I can swing it and get back to you. 🙂
I think you’re a flaming hockey lover 🙂
If people didn’t piss each other off, then we’d just have an echo chamber. The important thing to remember is that it goes both ways; that’s sometimes easy to forget in the heat of an argument. None of us have a monopoly on the truth, and we all have things we can learn, and things we can teach.
off topic, but I checked and I didn’t get your email afterall. colorsplash62@hotmail.com or colorsplash62@optonline.net.
OK, I just sent it to your hotmail and cc’d your optonline account. Hopefully that does it 🙂
Dammit. I knew you’d pick that option. 😉
Your snarkoliciousness is very much missed by me … and I’d even support God’s team just for you … there, how’s that for a show of love … 😉
Seriously though, I hear you wrt the fear …
Oh my buddha. Please drive to T-dot and kidnap me if I ever suggest such a thing! 🙂
Love you too O.
I would have posted a bit of O Canada had my head not been filled with the haunting words of Государственны&#
1081; гимн Российской Федерации. All of the moose depicted in that post were from The Kostroma Moose Farm in Russia. I’m shocked, just shocked, that a Canadian such as yourself can’t tell the national origin of a moose just by looking at it. Didn’t they teach you anything in school?
I get you Spiderleaf. You say inconvenient things that make some squirm. I like seeing some squirm. You also say things that I want to, but don’t say. So, for my own good, pull up your chair. It’s the empty seat at my table that has an open invitation to Spiderleaf written on it.
And btw, as far as I’m concerned I’m much more interested in what Canadians have to say about all this than what most Americans have to say.
Well when you put it that way, how can I resist? Thanks for always being there for me super. I miss you tons.
but damn I love your courage to be exactly who you are and say exactly what you mean. Enjoy this sweetie!
Thanks for this, Leezy. Spiderleaf..I wish there were lots more people from many more countries posting here along with us, I really do. We all share this world as well as the outcomes of each others choices and actions.
Scribe, your words always hit me hard. The way you tell a story and turn a phrase is an inspiration. Hope you’re doing well… and you are so right about us all being in this together.
Thank you Leezy. When I think of strong women, I think of you. Always.
One of these day’s I’ll hopefully be able to give you a hug in person. 🙂
to that day Spider!
If we all agreed all of the time here this would be a fairly useless blog-only through different ideas and a different way of being made to look at something do we learn, grow and expand our horizons. I always always enjoy seeing your name here Spider.
And I always enjoy thinking of chocolate when I see your name CI. 😉 Good to see you and thanks.
I think you’re a flaming hockey punk. 🙂
Thanks for the lyrics. I’ve been listening to a lot of George Harrison, Harry Chapin and Cat Stevens over the last year. Something’s really speaking to me from these guys songs.
Guilty as charged 🙂
It’s amazing how songs written in and about another time still have so many universal truths that carry through the ages…
truths from another time, truths before your time and the truths carry on.
Pink Floyd and The Ramones are making a big comeback among my daughter’s friends (she’s a Jr in HS).
We each draw our view of the world from the experiences we’ve had, the environment we’re currently in, and the information we choose to fill our brains with – I’m always appreciative of hearing from voices outside of these imaginary lines that so many U.S.-born Americans choose to use as tools of division.
Snark, on the other hand, is a global language and should be exercised liberally 😉
“imaginary lines”. Absolutely. We’re all human beings with blood running through our veins.
I’m too rusty to come up with an appropriately snarky sign off… damn. 😉
Spidey!
Good to see you here!! Your voice, snark or no snark, is always welcome in my world. I think we are all envious of Canadian Sanity at the moment. Plus, I have to agree that most of us wish you would invade our country and set us upright again. You all have a lot of tolerance for your unsavory neighbors to the South.
Keep on, just keep on.
Thanks a lot for Harry Chapin’s words. Love the guy.
Big, big, big hugs,
Love ya
Shirl
Shirl, you always make me smile. Stop it damn you, I’m trying to be grumpy here! 😉
Love and hugs back at you sister!
Heheheh. . .
I understand. About 15 years ago I put an all out high energy effort into maintaining a huge grumpy, it was the last time I tired it and it didn’t work then either. Some darn someone who loves you always comes along and makes you smile in spite of yourself.
Besides, that smile looks so damn good on you!
more hugs
Shirl
What a highly appropriate typo 😉
ROFLOL
Hugs ejmw

One more thing Ms. Canuck, I’ll have you know that I spent a great deal of time the two days before New Years looking at the train schedule from New York to Toronto, trying to figure out how to make it work. At the stroke of 12 on January first I raised a glass of champagne in your name, my dear Canadian friend. You are welcome in my life, online and off forever. Bank on it.
We’re your ears ringing? We raised a glass to you too 🙂
You’re always gonna be a part of my family too, ya big teddy bear.
You’re brilliant and articulate and funny and you can’t help it if you’re a fucking Canadian. I’m glad you’re here.
I’m glad to see you writing here. Snark away, lady of the north. I always appreciate your viewpoint.
OK now…about that Clique ;o)
the clique’s just not the same since you’ve left … we need you back here to keep super in line … 😉
Wha…..??!! Outrageous! ;o)
I’m trying to get her back here … 😉
Oh, I get it …wink wink ;o)
Besides, in her absence I’ve formed an untouchable and powerful clique of my own. Someone had to fill the power vacuum. But I might consider letting her join my clique :o)
🙂
I lost the secret password. Did anyone find it? 😉
You think you’re a misfit? Try being a Black Evangelical in the Democratic Party – Pro Life and Pro Labor, supporting Family Values and a living wage to support families, opposing the homosexual agenda and the neocon agenda. So you think you’re a misfit, eh? Well, here’s to solidarity between us misfits, for the greater good and for the glory of God.
Let’s go Red Wings!
(I’m a Detroit native)
Oscar, somehow I knew you were from up here in Big D! Why don’t you move back to that house down the street from us that’s up for sale? Louisville is a lovely town, but it isn’t home, is it?
Oh, spider, not only do you have the best national anthem in North America (which my spouse and I can almost sing even in French), we don’t think hockey is too strange, here in RedWingsLand. I even have 2 glorious Canucks in my lab group, and several more as alums. They aren’t too strange.
If I can bear reading past your name (of the 8-legged living critter I am phobic about), what you say may make me laugh or cry or stomp around in anger, but so what? This is your community, too. Why would I flame you? Even with my very hot Scots-Irish-Mesclun-whathaveyou temper I don’t believe in flaming. It’s worse than anger, which is healthy. I have, mostly, stopped flinching when I see your name, which has nothing to do with you!
A Canadian perspective is good, enough like progressives in the U.S. to be understood, but without the mass hypnotism that we get here sometimes as progressives.
I remember taking my 4 year old nephew South across the border to Windsor. (I’ve been trying to work that in, as I get to drive south to Canada, not something most people in the US can say).He was geeked up! His first trip out of the US! Real foreigners!
We crossed the Ambassador Bridge, and drove into Windsor (Ontario for the non-Canadians), and he said “When will we get there?”
When we told me we were there, he said, “But these are just people! They look just like us! ”
We had to take him where he could ask someone (other than us) where he was before he would believe us. He kept saying “Canadians are just people too??”
Yep, you are “just people”, and good for being Canadian!
