snow is highly overated. It loks great on Holiday cards, paintings, and tv. It truely sucks if it is on the end of a shovel in my hand or on a road I have to drive on. LOL
The dogs only go out when they absolutely have to. LOL
They are not big fans of cold and damp either. They have already cancelled all the MLK celebrations for tomorrow as they expect the weather to just get worse.
from a cpl weeks ago maryb…I’m running out of places to put it
this last one put us at or near the normal yrly/seasonal total…about 7.5′ cumulative…and we’re only half thru it. I’ve had about 18″ more here at casa d…gonna be a record setter if this keeps up.
and RF’s right, it’s not a lot of fun at the working end of a shovel…:{)
sooner or later winter’s going to get mad and leave and come visit you…<fingers crossed>
but … but … but we HAVE winter – just the ugly part of winter. Lots of freezing rain. Lots of power outages. I want the pretty stuff. I want to be snowbound. Bring it on!
guess we’re just spoiled…usually get enough sun and temps high enough to make it melt between storms…have been buried since thanksgiving…and a lot of grey skies…unusual weather patterns…all climate changes due to warming aren’t heat related… for sure.
I’d send you some warm weather but I really don’t want to share. I walked around the outdoor flea market today and was hot in the sun. I think it was in the low 70s and we’re due for more of the same tomorrow. The magnolias are blooming in January. WTF?
well … yes. Because my little freckled nose would get sunburned whether it was down in your hot weather or surrounded by the blinding glare of SNOW!
Frankly I think I can get sunburned on a rainy day if I’m not careful 🙂
Clam diggers enjoy many resurgences – as capris, crop pants, etc. They never go out of style. If you just mimic Katharine Hepburn I think you’ll always be stylish.
99% of all people who wear clam diggers look like hell in them. LOL They are not made for everyone but everyone wants to wear them. That is why you always have a friend who is honest and will tell you when something looks bad on you.
Teach and the others in the pond who are teachers are our un-song heroes!!!! I am so proud to know them and am always thrilled to hear about their work with students. Someday all schools will be equal and a good education will be a given and teachers will be revered and paid a decent salary. Until that day we must do what we can to give them the moral support we can and keep fighting to make a difference.
No, seriously, you’re right. Speaking as a teacher’s child — teachers are hard working and vastly underpaid. They spend mucho time with other people’s kids and the other people often don’t appreciate this. And they are expected to work miracles and make up for all the deficiencies of society. They need to be appreciated in tangible and intangible ways. And I’m proud to know Teach and Jim and all the other Bootrib teachers too.
Of course, speaking as a former student ,some teachers are mean and unfair … but we won’t go there because none of them belong to BT 🙂
My two ends of the spectrum: Sr. Anella who taught me to read and secretly laid a small carton of chocolate milk on my desk each day so I wouldn’t be the only one without one.
And Sr. Mary Rita who never had one nice thing to say about or to me and seemed to smirk when I failed.
ah yes, nuns. They DID run the gamut, didn’t they.
I actually had the Sisters of Loretto in highschool and they were wonderful. Very liberal. In fact our school almost closed when one member of the order protested the Vietnam war by joining in a protest that involved breaking into the draft office and pouring blood all of the draft records. And of course was arrested and went to jail for her belief that the war was an atrocity that should be stopped by any means possible. I can’t remember what city that was in, not St. Louis. So she didn’t even teach at our school. But a lot of parents were shocked and pulled their kids out of Loretto schools, causing a huge financial crisis. But those of us who stayed — we became good liberals 🙂
Thank you. I had some of the not so good teachers in my time also, but the ones who still stand out in my memory were the ones who worked so damn hard to make sure I was exposed to as many things as my mind could absorb. They helped form the liberal I have become. They instilled a love of beauty, knowledge, art, history, civics, the spoken and written word, music, and people in my heart and my mind. Without the input and guidance of the many fine teachers through the years I would not be the person I am today.
Of course, I got much of the same at home and from my different mentors in life. I was damn lucky to have been surrounded by fabulous people especially growing up in a small town in the south.
Thanks RF. I just stopped in to see if anyone was around and found your lovely words. I’ve been grading exams and loose papers all weekend. My grades are due Monday, so I’ve been chugging along all weekend. This makes my night.
You know who else belongs in the unsung heroes category – spouses of teachers, especially around report card time. It’s like being single all over again.
it’s grading the workbook worksheets, spelling tests, and math tests that make me wonder if I should be rethinking this whole married to a teacher thing. 🙂
My hubby can’t help me with grading anything, all essays all the time in American Lit. Though, when he was on leave last year, he did input my grades into the computer. Now that he’s back to work, I really miss that.
he stick with secondary ed (social studies) instead of encouraging him in his decision to convert to el ed on his masters — such poor planning on my part. But I was young and dumb (instead of old and dumb like I am now).
well, yes, of course I have high standards of honesty but that has nothing to do with my negligence in omitting to say how nice Jim is on a regular basis. That’s just plain laziness.
The freezing rain has been going on for a couple of days but … the freeze line has run right through the city and I live in south city so haven’t got much besides rain while the north suburbs have been getting the ice and the power outages. But it’s been hard to plan to do anything because you never know when the temperature is going to slip down and everything will glaze over.
I feel like I have been sitting for a week straight trying to get grades done. I needed to do something else and I thought the cafe to be a perfect stop.
my oldest sister has never been silent about anything. And it’s the baby sister who is the quiet one — I think because she had such hard time talking over us.
it’s the middle sister who talks — incessently. From the moment she got up in the morning until she fell asleep at night. And still does. How can people talk so much when they have nothing to say? It’s a question I’ve been asking myself since I was a child.
It’s supposed to get “very windy” tomorrow. They keep saying that with a worried look on their faces – “very windy”. Which means that all the ice encased tree branches are going to start falling — on more power lines. I’m starting to feel sorry for the power company — it’s been a hard 8 months for them.
The best thing about this storm though is that the local news people have something to talk about besides the weather — they are spending all their time on those kidnapped boys who were recovered. So we have much less weather drama on TV.
In order to have forgotten any wisdom they would have had to listen to me in the first place, wouldn’t they? There I was, willing to impart the wisdom of the ages. Well, at least the wisdom of being three years older. And did they take advantage of it? No.
I do have one baby (6’5″) brother who hasn’t forgotten his place and pays me my due deference by asking my advice. He was the most maleable and I molded him for all i was worth! LOL
For a smooth hundred bucks and a short 1 hour flight I couldn’t pass it up. And getting around on the metro is so much easier.
btw, my computer is crawling tonight, that’s why I haven’t been giving out ratings. Too much time loading each time. So virtual fours for everyone! Uh oh, there’s a black car parked across the street. I knew it! The 4 patrol!
Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you.
You’re probably Ok though. I think the 4 police only show up if you accidentally give out a 2 and THEN upgrade it to a 4. The black car is probably just the NSA.
Not to mention that I saw something in the open thread about manny being dressed in a rubber suit and making more tribbers come?! I’m beginning to harbor a morbid curiosity about this LOL
I’m in and out, fighting with code over the b. Anyone else around?
I’m in and out also. Still working on my 50 state design LOL
and a good evening…all of you lucky enough to be enjoying balmy temps.
still looks like this here:
clik to enlarge
the piles are just a lot deeper…currently
check dis yawl…weird al:
got to get a fire going, back in a bit
enjoy
That is too damn funny!!!!
Hey d. That’s a lot of white stuff you got on the ground. We’ve only got rain — some of it freezing. I miss snow.
snow is highly overated. It loks great on Holiday cards, paintings, and tv. It truely sucks if it is on the end of a shovel in my hand or on a road I have to drive on. LOL
But … if one must have frozen precipitation, I’ll take snow over ice any day.
amen to that. I am so afraid that tonight we will actually get the sleet they have been warning us about.
The weather does look awfully chilly down your way.
The dogs only go out when they absolutely have to. LOL
They are not big fans of cold and damp either. They have already cancelled all the MLK celebrations for tomorrow as they expect the weather to just get worse.

LOL and one of the worst snow storms in NC History was in March. So don’t count your blessing quite yet. LOL
Don’t be so quick to gloat. The weather gods do not like to be mocked. Your day will come.
ROTFLMAO!!!! Great minds think a like
It’s so clear that you’re simply jealous. You didn’t get your little freckled nose sunburned today.
well … yes. Because my little freckled nose would get sunburned whether it was down in your hot weather or surrounded by the blinding glare of SNOW!
Frankly I think I can get sunburned on a rainy day if I’m not careful 🙂
That is why they make sunblock and big floppy hats. LOL
I can see her now. 🙂
Yes, a Katherine Hepburn hat and scarf, clam diggers and a long sleeve blouse and white gunk on her nose. LOL
<gasp!> who took that picture and how did you get hold of it?
Clam diggers enjoy many resurgences – as capris, crop pants, etc. They never go out of style. If you just mimic Katharine Hepburn I think you’ll always be stylish.
But actually I look nothing like Katherine Hepburn with her boyish frame and look terrible in clam diggers/capris whatever.
The big floppy hat I could pull off.
capris make my legs look like tree stumps. My brother always told me I have Pete Rose ankles. I love brothers.
99% of all people who wear clam diggers look like hell in them. LOL They are not made for everyone but everyone wants to wear them. That is why you always have a friend who is honest and will tell you when something looks bad on you.
LOL!!!!
I’m a lifelong Clevelander. We don’t have sun in the winter so the phenomenon of sunburn + cold weather is unknown to me.
Still waiting for snow here, although I`m going skiing in the mountains in a week.
Teach and the others in the pond who are teachers are our un-song heroes!!!! I am so proud to know them and am always thrilled to hear about their work with students. that was beautiful ::sniff::

considering what nice things we’re saying about them, you’d think Teach and Jim would appear to accept their awards 🙂
I am sure they will eventually. They might be grading papers for school.
Thanks RF. I just stopped in to see if anyone was around and found your lovely words. I’ve been grading exams and loose papers all weekend. My grades are due Monday, so I’ve been chugging along all weekend. This makes my night.

You are more than welcome!!! Keep up the good fight and we will do what we can to help.

should just give fewer tests. Clearly he’s overworking those poor students.
BTW how is his “nice” offensive going?
but that’s just because I hate trying to grade spelling tests by kiddies with unreadable handwriting.
He says it’s too early to tell if it’s working with the kids but he feels better.
he’s naturally nice. Something I’ve been saying for the last year 🙂
since you actually met him. 😛
I feel sure I have. Maybe I said it when you weren’t around?
On the other hand I went right in to campaign mode after Chicago so maybe I was negligent.
and more likely, you just have high standards of honesty.
Did you get hit with the ice storm?
well, yes, of course I have high standards of honesty but that has nothing to do with my negligence in omitting to say how nice Jim is on a regular basis. That’s just plain laziness.

You deserve all the good words Toni!
And leave it to the woman teacher of the bunch to be able to multi task — grade papers AND make an appearance in the cafe 🙂
I feel like I have been sitting for a week straight trying to get grades done. I needed to do something else and I thought the cafe to be a perfect stop.
I’m thinking that I didn’t really need to take down the kiddie pool, 50’s here in NY.
Jim and I had a really fierce competition going on who could tear up more. He won but I gave it my best.
I saw part of it, but I had no tears.
did you see the segment on the chimps or the elephants?
I saw the chimps. It was sad.
he says completely dry eyed and emotionlessly …
Sometimes I think that being the middle of 5 children may have had an impact.
sheesh. middle child.
Everybody knows that being the oldest child is the hardest. We suffer in silence while the middle children complain.
my oldest sister has never been silent about anything.
My youngest sister and I are pretty quiet.
If people couldn’t talk when they had nothing to say, politics wouldn’t exist.
I’m glad you have missed most of the freezing rain — very ugly stuff.
It’s supposed to get “very windy” tomorrow. They keep saying that with a worried look on their faces – “very windy”. Which means that all the ice encased tree branches are going to start falling — on more power lines. I’m starting to feel sorry for the power company — it’s been a hard 8 months for them.

we don’t get enough of them.
Well, I hope the dire predictions don’t happen. I’m off to bed. Night.
Night. See you next weekend.
To oldest kids everywhere, stop the madness!
Tell me about it! And they seem to have conveniently forgotten all the wisdom I passed down over the years. Ingrates!
Hi :o)
In order to have forgotten any wisdom they would have had to listen to me in the first place, wouldn’t they? There I was, willing to impart the wisdom of the ages. Well, at least the wisdom of being three years older. And did they take advantage of it? No.
Hi 🙂
I do have one baby (6’5″) brother who hasn’t forgotten his place and pays me my due deference by asking my advice. He was the most maleable and I molded him for all i was worth! LOL
I’m imagining a family of giants. Or at least a basketball team.
Presumably you molded him before he got to be 6’5″? Or maybe you just used force of personality … 🙂
Since he’s two inches taller than me I had to use the force of the evil eye :o)
Allright, I’m a cold bastard.
You can’t fool me. I’ve met you 🙂
I wouldn’t admit to this where others can read about it.
I’m not ashamed of our time together …
Wow! Most people who know me wouldn’t say this.
You really need to meet new people.
That’s what they keep saying too.
Then you should grab a flight to DC on the 27th. The possibilities for new friends are definetily in your favor…and ours :o)
I figured that you’d driving or training it. It would be a very short flight.
It seems that Darth Cheney has finally caught up with you.
Little does he know that he’s walking into my dastardly trap! Finally!
Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you.
You’re probably Ok though. I think the 4 police only show up if you accidentally give out a 2 and THEN upgrade it to a 4. The black car is probably just the NSA.
NSA? It can’t be them. I have an appointment with them on the 26th at the airport. We always meet up there.
Now remember … you can carry on only 3 ounces of personal lubricant. 🙂
And no snowglobes.
Not to mention that I saw something in the open thread about manny being dressed in a rubber suit and making more tribbers come?! I’m beginning to harbor a morbid curiosity about this LOL
Just be real careful about giving Boran any more 4’s lest you be followed across the internet and held to account ;o)
I’m willing to live dangerously when it comes to my friend B2.
Besides, people are always following me around the internet because they are mesmerized by my generous nature.
Too funny!
So funny it’s scary ;o)
I thought the photography of the polar bear and her cub was gorgeous and the way she cradled the cub so delicately with those huge paws was amazing.
That was wonderful.
