Last season was about a bad president who had to be removed from office, who bore an all too obvious connection to both Nixon and Bush.
This year, the talk is about shredding the constitution in order to “protect” us from terrorism. It promises to be both interesting and relevant, yet again. And absolutely DYNAMITE television, if you’re into fast action, multiple twists and turns, swapping allegiances, and the killing off of some of your favorite characters unexpectedly (okay, you don’t have to like that, but you do have to expect that from “24”)! 😉
Yep. Season 5 was the best one yet. After Season 6 there’ll be a “24” movie too. Of course, they only have 2 hours, so I’m guessing they’ll break their ‘realtime’ format.
The Texas Ethics Commission ruled in November that a public official in the Lone Star state, receiving money as a gift such as from a lobbyist, need disclose only that he received “a check” or “currency” and need not reveal the actual amount of money. Said the district attorney in Austin, who was outraged by the ruling, it is now “perfectly legal to report the gift of ‘a wheelbarrow’ without reporting that the wheelbarrow was filled with cash.” [San Antonio Express-News, 11-27-06]
Yes, Texas is so full of shit at times you have to laugh or cry. I try to laugh and then get the bastards out of office. LOL I am thrilled to say that the bad wear=ther has made them cancel Gov. Goodhairs parade tomorrow. Now of they would only cnacel the 1.5 million dollar crowning and actually do something for the state with the money I would be thrilled.
It might be. I couldn’t remember the exact number so I put million. Knowing Goodhair and the assholes he swings with it probably is. I am sure quite a few of the log cabin republicans will be there to see their closet buddy get crowned again.
I’ve always wondered with all the money that goes into campaigning and all the other stuff how much that could help the people who really need it. I guess the rich just get richer.
That is why I am all for campaign limits that are strickly inforced. I would love to see a campaign with no tv commercials, no pac sponsored commercials and each candidate given the same amout of free time on primetime tv
I remember Texas politics being extremely entertaining when I lived in Austin in the 80s, and I wasn’t even particularly paying attention back then. And it didn’t turn weird overnight just because I moved there, from what I understand.
We took cabs a lot in those days, and our favorite driver — and many other peoples’ — was Manuel Aprisa, who drove #9 for Roy’s Cab. Every time we got in his cab he’d have a new set of jokes for us. Jokes about Dan Quayle, Ronald Reagan, Ann Richards, the weather, the environment, the Longhorns, the Aggies — everything was fair game. That was his shtick, and government types flying into Austin would often ask for #9 to hear the latest and trade jokes with him. He was a good guy, and I occasionally wonder what happened to him. Google searches don’t turn anything that looks like him up, and searching for “Roy’s Taxi” in Austin tends to bring up sites that are critical of the company’s operation. It’s really a shame. They were great when we lived there — but again, that’s been 15 years. A lot can happen in 15 years.
15 years would be a long time for a cabby to still be doing it unless he was mighty young in the 80’s. LOL Now you get cabbies you have to tell how to get where you are going. I drive instead of taking cabs. LOL
He’d been doing it for years by the time we got there, we lived there for almost nine years, and by the time we left he was probably in his 50s somewhere.
We didn’t have much of a choice in transportation. I would take the bus to and from work (when we didn’t live right next door to the shop, as we did for many years) but the nearest grocery store was about a mile away and we didn’t own a car. (Yeah, I know, heresy. We spent our first year there fending off people who wanted to sell us a car, cheap, because they just knew we needed one. We spent our entire time in Austin car-free, and survived nonetheless.) We tended to stick with the same cab company because for years our house was hard to find, hidden at the end of a long driveway off a side street in south Austin. Once in a while we’d actually see the cab go past the driveway entrance, come back s-l-o-w-l-y looking at the house numbers, stop, wait (while he called the dispatcher, who always knew how to find us because they drove occasionally themselves) and then finally make his way up the driveway.
Hey, when you’re poor and living in Texas you get your entertainment where you can find it.
LOL Well I moved here with a car. The public transit system in SF spoiled me for life anywhere but a major city. Arizona’s none existant public transit when I first moved there made a car a must. Busses did not run on Sundays and never after midnight.
I haven’t thought about the co-op busses for years. I used to ride them too (even though I wasn’t a student — sssssh, don’t tell anyone). I think there was a bus that would drop you off somewhere on Riverside, where in the early days I could walk to our apartment. Then we moved south of Oltorf and I couldn’t do that dodge anymore. 🙂
The coop system was the best mass transit in Texas. May still be, for that matter. We could sure use it here in Detroit! I know that hundreds rode it daily who weren’t students. But then, with 55K students, and so many Texans driving, who would complain?
I lived mostly in West Austin, or just north of campus where I could walk anywhere. Only in my last year, when Teach was with me and we lived in Travis Heights, was there no bus. It really was possible to do without a car – about the only place in Texas where I think that’s possible.
We’ve had a half-hearted ice storm. So dreary I made pancakes for lunch. That’s supposed to raise smiles, but somehow, it didn’t work the way it used to when my grandmother did it!
Yes, he saw your 0 rating, which was a little bitty clue to your thinking 🙂
You’re probably right (we talked about it) – the person didn’t come back. Teach didn’t want to get the diary hijacked into a big flamewar, however, which is why he answered as he did. Teach is quite capable of cutting someone off at the knees (or elsewhere) verbally, and I’m sure he thought about it!
We’ve got a predicted high of 88 degrees today. With the recent rain and warm weather the tomato plants (all 19 of them) are finally taking off and it should be a bumper crop in a few weeks time.
Molly the muscovy has eight brand new ducklings that must have hatched out over night. I’ll get pics in a bit.
Albert had to have yet more dental surgery yesterday and is a bit woozy and wacked out on pain meds. Poor little grummet.
This is a house of women. All males thus fall into the critter catagory. Albert B. Bun is a dwarf-lop rabbit. Other males are Sandy and Inti (alpacas) and Heckle the Muscovy drake (and proud papa). Other females are Nina and Pacha (alpacas) and Snert, Molly and Boogie (Muscovy ducks), and Luna (dog), of course.
There was another bunny, Henry. Henry died of “testosterone poisioning.”
When we had him neutered, the vet removed one testicle but only found part of the other testicle. After a few months, it was clear that some testicular tissue had adhered to another organ and was producing testosterone. Consequently he became very aggressive with Albert (Albert still bears the scars), and to a lessor degree, us. We tried keeping them separate, but in the end Henry was so destructive that he could not be let out and the isolation started driving him a bit crazy. We made the decision to put him down.
Imogen is horribly allergic to cats. Hence the rabbit as house pet.
Unfortunately, ferral cats are a real problem here in the absence of any other preditors to keep them in check. Both ferrals and domestic cats do horrific damage to the local bird and small marsupial population, and spread toxoplasmosis to the wallabies and paddymelons (small kangaroos).
On that basis alone we probably wouldn’t have one. The problem is so bad that there is a push to make certain areas of the state cat-free, and/or register all cats and require them to be kept inside.
You can probably guess I am not a cat person. I think there should be leash laws for cats just as there are for dogs. I hate having the neighbor’s dog or cat running free and using my yard as their toilet.
I’ve had quite a few cats over the years, and I am certainly not cat averse. But I am of the opinion that cats need to be kept from roaming free. An escape proof outdoor play area with a cat door to get in and out of the house is a fine way of keeping both the cat(s) and the wildlife safe and happy.
Dearest RF.
You are full of it where cats are concerned – poor early experience, no doubt! No matter, I love you anyway!
We do keep our cats in, always, which is where cats belong, except in the rarest of circumstances. Even when we lived way out in the country, where we thought it was safe, our much loved senior cat caught a terrible disease from a feral cat, and she died. So, inside permanently, unless under complete control!
Keres’ idea about a enclosed run for cats sounds great, however. Our screened in back porch comes pretty close.
The poor feral cats in our neighborhood are terribly diseased; I’ve taken several to the Humane Society. Six of our cats were kittens born in our back yard and we took them in to remove them from the feral population.
The feral dogs around here are dangerous. They have attacked people & dogs (One of our neighbors and his partner were walking their aged dog similar in size to the divas. The dog bit one of the guys and their lovely dog was severely injured. The whole neighborhood was very upset, but the dogs were never caught.). They killed several of the beautiful pheasants that inhabit our neighborhood. Too many of the feral dogs are pit bulls and rottweilers that have been bred for fighting and then escaped cruel owners.
I don’t like any of the ferals, of any breed or species, period.
And then there is our down the block neighbor who allows his St. Bernard to shit all over neighbor’s yards and never picks up after her.
Pets abandoned, and breeding in the wild, made by bad humans.
I do not agree with any animal being allowed to roam free unless is it a wild animal in it’s matural habitat. That goes for dogs, cats or any others. I had a very bad experience with a cat but really didn’t like them before that either. I am a dog person and not ashamed of it. I don’t mind other people’s cats as long as they are in their houses. How does a rabbit eat carrots without teeth? Oh wait you can get strained carrots at the store. I am sorry for ALbert but have never hear of a rabbitt having dental surgery.
We chop up his food for him. He seems to manage just fine. And yes, should it come to that, we can feed him baby food.
Alberts teeth were poorly aligned. Additionally, he carries a form of bacteria that causes abcesses. Unfortunately, you can suppress this bacteria in rabbits, but not eliminate it – because antibiotics strong enough to kill pasturella bacteria are also strong enough to kill rabbits.
I’ve got to go and find something for FMom and then start dinner. I think I spend half my time just looking for stuff she puts down and forgets where she put it.
You’ll be glad to know that the car door glass went in quickly, but it looked too . . . what’s the word, ah yes, clean to be a part of my little car. I’ll take Luna with me when I go to get feed for the alpacas and ducklings, and I’m sure she’ll fix that for me.
on a car window to give it a lovely, welcoming touch.
I’m glad to see you’re inching your way up in total number of critters but we’ve already done ducks. I think you need to go for something new — isn’t about time for a horse or two?
I had two horses and a donkey before I left the US. I left my mare with a friend to be shipped here when we found a place to keep her. Unfortunately, right as we found our current property, Mojave had a stroke. After that, we couldn’t risk her making the long journey. So I gave her to a young family whose daughters had been taking lessons on her from my friend. I still miss her terribly, and I can’t imagine replacing her.
Because we picked this place for its pasture (for Mojave), we eventually decided we needed alpacas to keep it mowed. And four alpacas are probably the limit we can keep on our place. Any additional grazers would denude the place.
Princes and frogs both welcomed here. I’ll have one of each.
Who here watches “24”? I’m an addict!
Last season was about a bad president who had to be removed from office, who bore an all too obvious connection to both Nixon and Bush.

24 the best show on televison…
I used to watch it religiously. It was one of the top items on the TiVo.
Somewhere around season 4 I quit. I don’t know why, really. I just sorta lost interest.
It has gotten much better season 5 was great.
Yep. Season 5 was the best one yet. After Season 6 there’ll be a “24” movie too. Of course, they only have 2 hours, so I’m guessing they’ll break their ‘realtime’ format.

I’ll just have my usual 27 please.
Hi, FM. How’s your back? How’s FMom?
Hi KS. We’re both doing fine today. Thanks for asking.
How’re you and Teach today?
So-so. Kind of down weekend after a hard week.
Around here it’s been rainy and dreary all day. I usually like winter, but so far I’m not liking this one.
We’ve had a half-hearted ice storm. So dreary I made pancakes for lunch. That’s supposed to raise smiles, but somehow, it didn’t work the way it used to when my grandmother did it!
That;s cause you had to cook. LOL
Kidspeak please tell Teach that I think jojo is a troll on the other dairy.
That is why I checked the profile and then went back and did a zero rating.
I miss all the fun.
LOL I am sure come election time there will be plenty of fun for all.
Me, too, but what’s the point raising to the bait? That’s how diaries get hi-jacked.
LOL That is why I did not comment. I never feed the trolls. LOL
I agree with you Teach and I hate it when people raise to the bait.
yes but giving ratings of 4’s make the comment stay around and it was total bs as anyone could tell.
You’re right. It will make it stay around, but I would’ve changed it if the person responded like a butt-head. So far, nothing.
I just want fish to rise to my bait. In the water. And a good fish.
and gimme a hogshead of whatever FM is drinking, a spigot and a cot.
A wise man I see. Save all the wear and tear on glasses and bottles.
Not to mention the effort of standing up, sitting down and having to lift all those heavy glasses.
Yeah I’ve always figured if your already laying down drinking, it saves you the trouble of falling down.
And remember, kids, you’re not really drunk if you can lay down on the floor without holding on!
Well of course you have to hold on. You’ll spin off if you don’t.
I want a cot with a really good mattress, lots of fluffy pillows, and about 96 more hours to the weekend! Oh, some really good bourbon, too.
Oh how I miss those days. 🙂
Me, too. Haven’t had days like that since I was about 4 – and didn’t have the bourbon then, either.
We’ve got a predicted high of 88 degrees today. With the recent rain and warm weather the tomato plants (all 19 of them) are finally taking off and it should be a bumper crop in a few weeks time.

Hi keres.
Sounds like good weather your way. Congrats to Molly and poor Albert.
I would gladly send you the sleet and freezing weather from here. LOL
Although we are desperate for water, we are not that desperate. But thanks anyway.
Anyone who wants to send cool showers our way is more than welcome to.
Poor Albert indeed. I suspect he is going to end up entirely toothless soon.
okay…is albert one of the animals or the humans?
This is a house of women. All males thus fall into the critter catagory. Albert B. Bun is a dwarf-lop rabbit. Other males are Sandy and Inti (alpacas) and Heckle the Muscovy drake (and proud papa). Am arranging for you to get a couple of kittens delivered immediately. Can’t believe you are so terribly cat-deprived!
oh please the cats would eat the ducks and try and eat the rabbitt. more puppies are needed.
A litter for Luna is being planned. We plan to keep one puppy.

I’m a big believer in compromise.
I agree. We keep our thundering horde inside. We also have a large house.
I was mostly kidding. Although, minus your ducklings, we have more livestock, which is surprising.
we have more livestock
Do tell. In addition to the four pooties of the Apocolypse, who else shares your abode?
I once had 56 animals (excluding aquarium pets), but I’m forbidden by Imogen to ever come close to that number again.
Oh, and I forgot the two chickens. But they really belong to Imogen’s mum so I don’t think of them as ours.
Dearest RF.

I wonder if they make false teeth for rabbits?
We do have a friend who is a dentist specializing in false teeth. We could ask her.
Poor Albert! I wasn’t aware rabbits had such dental troubles.
The muscovy’s would be fun to see as ducklings.
I’ve got to go and find something for FMom and then start dinner. I think I spend half my time just looking for stuff she puts down and forgets where she put it.
Back in awhile.
I’ve got to go be domestic, too. But not cooking, just putting in some hems.
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM….that lady in the pic for the lounge is really mak’n that frog smile….LMAO
if the frog had a cig in his mouth….I would say they were done….
(just could’nt help myself there)
Hey, wolf, longtime nosee! Are you off the road now? Good to see you in any case.
thank ya…and still on the road…but only 5 days a week now, home on the weekends these days..and only in one state…
good to hear from ya…
peace
I haven’t been to this bar before. Shot of peach Stoli, please, and a water back.
I really like the picture of the Lady and the Frog. Who did it? Anyone know?
where misbehaving is a fine art.
I found the image through google images; it was being offered on ebay but there wasn’t any artist info.
I would buy that painting.
Mmm, the Stoli is good. I see you keep it in the freezer! Excellent.
Thanks for the welcome. I’ll be back.
Oops, forgot to mention that it was a tile.
How about a vodka gimlet?
good idea – thanks!
No gin, please 😛
Hi hrh.
Good to see you in the cafe. We have viturally anything you want with no hangover in the morning.
Hi hrh! Always good to see another vodka drinker here. 🙂
I just went to your site…looks good. Especially with the review of dark chocolate m&m’s, cookware glamour shot, and chili recipe!
Hi Andi.
You’ll be glad to know that the car door glass went in quickly, but it looked too . . . what’s the word, ah yes, clean to be a part of my little car. I’ll take Luna with me when I go to get feed for the alpacas and ducklings, and I’m sure she’ll fix that for me.
