Comedian and radio talk show host Al Franken has begun calling Democratic members of Congress and prominent Minnesota Democrats to tell them he will definitely challenge Republican Sen. Norm Coleman in 2008, McClatchy Newspapers has learned.
I read yesterday that Norm Coleman remarked that Al Franken’s values are more New York/Hollywood; not Midwestern Values. Al Franken shot back with this [paraphrased]: Among the New York Jews in this election, I’m the only one actually raised in Minnesota. (Coleman was born/raised in New York and moved to Minnesota later)
I’m thinking that this race will be a lot of fun to watch for us, and hell on earth for Norm Coleman. Go Al!!!!
Canada’s Environment Commissioner Fired in Climate Flap
OTTAWA, Ontario, Canada, January 31, 2007 (ENS) – Canada’s Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development was replaced on Tuesday amidst allegations that she was too critical of Canada’s performance on climate change.
As commissioner, Johanne Gelinas was part of the Office of the Auditor General, which reports to Parliament as a whole, not to the government.
Auditor General of Canada Sheila Fraser said in a statement that Gelinas was “leaving the position to pursue other opportunities.”
But in a statement Tuesday night, Gelinas, who is out of the country, wrote, “I was considering a future departure, but today’s announcement from Sheila Fraser was premature and came as a complete surprise to me.”
Media reports say Fraser was critical of a climate change audit report written by Gelinas and tabled September 28, 2006 in the House of Commons.
But today Fraser told the House of Commons Environment Committee that Gelinas’ climate report had nothing to do with her dismissal. Fraser did not shed much light on what influenced her decision to fire Gelinas, citing privacy concerns and the possibility of future legal action on Gelinas’ part.
In her controversial report, Gelinas wrote, “Climate change is upon us and no matter how you look at it, the stakes for Canada are high. With its resources and powers, the federal government can make a big difference. But our findings show that it has not been up to the task so far.”
Well I think that Gelinas’ criticism does nothing but help the enemies of Canada. If she had done her homework and read all those censored highly scientific US Government reports on climate change, she would have known how to pander write a report that would do any right wing borderline fascist government proud.
HOUSTON – Oil giant Exxon Mobil Corp. on Thursday posted the largest annual profit by a U.S. company — $39.5 billion — even as earnings for the last quarter of 2006 declined 4 percent.
The 2006 profit topped Exxon Mobil’s own previous record of $36.13 billion set in 2005.
Revenue at the world’s largest publicly traded oil company rose to $377.64 billion for the year, surpassing the record $370.68 billion Exxon posted in 2005.
“Exxon Mobil continued to leverage its globally diverse resource base to bring additional crude oil and natural gas to market,” Rex W. Tillerson, chairman of the Irvin, Texas-based company, said in a statement.
