Bush Competence – lost in translation

I am very much against English-only legislation to force a single language on people. Yes, culture benefits from a common shared language, but it is the unintended consequences that worry and bother me. Below are some of those consequences…

Latin could never be used in Catholic services.

You couldn’t use French in a French restaurant.

Taco would be stricken from the corporate name of Taco Bell.

You would have to call “pajamas” something else.

Stores would need to remove all the rouge from make-up aisles.

Your VW would no longer have fahrvergnügen.

Monster.com would need to do something about all those resumés.

Autumn would somehow not be the same without Oktoberfest.

English is a global language and human culture is making it so. I read a report some years back saying there are more English-literate Chinese than there are native speakers of English in the United States.

Everyone take a deep breath, English is not going away anytime soon.

NOTE: I never really did a Steve Irwin strip so this is my ode to him.
