This is the face of a much photographed dog gamely tolerating the constant intrusion.

Hey Andi. Great catch.
It’s nice when the wildlife shows up in the wild – however briefly.
when we first came round the switchback, the deer was having a sneezing fit and trying to rub her nose with her hoof so she couldn’t run away. She must have sneezed about 10 times — I would’ve felt really sorry for her if I hadn’t been laughing so hard.
I guess cats are included in “general critters”.. Three weeks ago yesterday, we lost our oldest cat to old age at almost 18 (his b-day would have been April 2nd). The following day, taking our 2nd oldest to the vet for a check-up we found that the round tummy that we thought was a result of him eating more after being reunited with me in the house where I was taking care of my mother was actually fluid in the abdomen. An ultrasound & a sample of the fluid showed a mass on his liver and cancer cells in the bloody fluid. We had to have him put to sleep. He was only 14. We still have one cat – a very stand-offish calico – but my two cuddlebums are gone and the house seems so empty. We’ve been told by the technician at the vet’s that short-hair male yellow tabbies, with or without white, tend to be very cuddly. Any advice from other cat “staff” out there?
Hi Denim. I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your two friends.
I don’t have any idea if coat color affects temperament, but my best cat was male orange tux tabby. I wouldn’t characterize him as “cuddly,” but he was very friendly and quite the charater. I had another male, a huge Norwegian Forrest type that was very much the lap cat.
My own experience has been that male cats tend to stay very immature their whole lives, whereas females tend to “grow up” at some point. That tends to make the males more inclinded to want to be “babied” even when they are grown.
Also, the cats I’ve adopted off the street tended to know they had it good and settle in to the joys of regular feedings and warm laps very quickly.
Thanks, Keres.. I’m completely spoiled – I had two cats in a row who I called “velcro kitties” because they always wanted to be as close to me as possible. They both also loved being under the covers of the bed and would tickle my cheek with their whiskers when I was sleeping so I’d raise my arm to brush whatever it was away and they’d slip through the gap and settle in next to me to sleep. The one, a white with black blobs short-haired male Heinz 57 (you’d call him a mutt if he had been a dog) was with me for almost 23 years. The second which we had adopted shortly before #1 passed away was a brown tabby male, also short-haired. He’s the one I lost three weeks ago to cancer. I was so lucky to share their lives and their love. Ditto with The Monster – he wasn’t any great shakes as a lap cat, but he’d cuddle in next to me and he loved to steal my pillow in the middle of the night – I’d wake up with a crick in my neck and he’d be in full possession of the pillow {g}..
We’re celebrating family bithdays this weekend.
Imogen’s and my niece turns two tomorrow, so we took her to a local wildlife park where this fellow lives.
I’ll post more pics later, after the family leaves.
