Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister, Salam Zikam Ali al-Zubaie, was wounded in a suicide bomb attack in Baghdad’s Green Zone:
Iraq’s deputy prime minister, Salam Zikam Ali al-Zubaie, was today wounded during a suicide bombing in Baghdad’s heavily fortified green zone.
He was undergoing surgery and his condition was “not stable”, said a senior Iraqi security official.
Brigadier General Qassim Moussawi, a spokesman for security in Baghdad, told Iraqi state television that Mr Zubaie was wounded in various parts of his body.
“He is undergoing surgery now. His condition is not stable so far,” Mr Moussawi said.
An aide to Mr Zubaie, a member of the main Sunni Arab political bloc, said he was hit by shrapnel in the stomach and shoulder as he was attending prayers. At least two people were killed in the attack.
Things are really going well with Bush’s surge strategy, aren’t they? Even the fabled Emerald City within a city is no longer safe for its denizens (or visiting UN dignitaries). Imagine a US government whose second in command had just been bombed inside the White House grounds, or at the Capitol, and was lying near death in a hospital. Would Americans think we were secure in our persons and property from terrorist attacks if that happened? Now think about how ordinary Iraqis feel, never knowing whether each day may be their last, whether at the hands of trigger happy mercenaries, US air strikes, Suicide bombers or Shi’ite militia death squads.
Isn’t it time we impeached President Bush and Vice President Cheney over the lies that led us and our military into this “catastrophic success?” I think you know my answer …
