Maggie Habberman has an article in today’s New York Post with the following headline: Edward’s Cashing in on Wife’s Cancer. How exactly is he cashing in? If you send he and his wife an email wishing her good health, they are keeping that email in the database for later fundraising requests.
In response to criticism, they will add a feature allowing well-wishers to opt out of future email solicitations.
This is the level that Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post will sink to to smear Democrats. This isn’t civil discourse. It’s just guttersniping. The New York Post is part of the News Corp media empire. John Edwards should refuse to do any appearances or debates with any News Corp. entity, and any decent Democrat should do the same in solidarity with Elizabeth Edwards.
And Arianna’s got it front and center. I’m about to stop going there.
It’s getting attention, and that’s the point. Outrageous statements bring attention, and money. Just ask Coulter, Limbaugh and Robertson.
It is an outrageous headline, but I have to say Edwards’s staff set him up for it. If the Post story is correct, sending fundraising emails to Elizabeth’s wellwishers was a big mistake. I feel sure that the campaign just used its standard web setup for campaign supporters, and that the site seemed the obvious way to allow people to express their good wishes for Elizabeth. But put them together without enough thought and you have prime grist for the gotcha “journalists”.
It never ceases to amaze me how sloppy and clueless candidates and their staffs are about Internet use. I’m rooting for Edwards in the primaries and hope he gets some savvier help. This gift to the Dem haters never should have happened.
PS– Speaking of the Net, the Post link in the above article doesn’t work.
The headline is crappy. but, I’ve heard about it before today. I dismissed it as rumors. I’ve heard about it several days ago and cannot remember where.
I have no pro or con on it as I am an Obama supporter and have one thing to say: don’t go off or speculate. Stay cool for a few days and see what comes of it.
sunday Kos, et. al. went off the deep end about the fact that Obama told the truth. He was vilified until about 11:00 yesterday when his numbers came out. suddenly he was okay again.
So, sit tight and see what happens. I doubt it will go any further.
