I’m having a quiet evening; curly is out of town and the asklets are (naturally) with their mother this weekend. Listening to my iTunes and one group I find myself paying more attention to lately is the Asian Dub Foundation.
Truly ‘socially aware’ music – but to some, maybe many – difficult to get because of the ‘dub’ format.
Check some (partial) lyrics below, I’ll link to a couple of videos in the comments.
Real Great Britain
Union jack and union jill
Back up and down the same old hill
Sell the flag to the youths
But who swallows the bill
“murdoch she wrote”
Him have his hand in the tillBlairful of thatcher
Stuck on the 45
The suits have changed
But the old ties survive
New britannia cool
Who are you trying to fool?
Behind your fashion-tashion i see nothing at allCare for the commodity
Cuts the nation into three
Rich pickings for the first
Bottom third you never see
While middle england keeps swinging its
Loyalty
No concern for the future
Just with dead royaltySo will the real, the real great britan
Step forward
This is the national identity parade
Shoe gazer nation forever looking
Backwards
Time to reject the sixties charade
Or how about this one:
Rebel Warrior
Ami bidrohi!
I the rebel warrior
I have risen alone with my head held high
I will only rest
When the cries of the oppressed
No longer reach the sky
When the sound of the sword of the oppressor
No longer rings in battle
Hear my warcry!I’m hear to teach you a lesson
I’m hear to torture your soul
I’m the itch in your side that’s got out of control
‘gonna prey on your conscience
You’ll be praying for forgiveness
Seen all the evidence
No longer need a witness
So take my word man
Here’s my sentence
One hundred thousand years of repentance.
We know that the Dixie Chicks got in trouble for their stance against the Bush-regime, and Pink has also had her say.
Who is your favorite artist with a political message, past or present?
Pure dance happiness – not much politics here:
This is the Riddim I Like:
Here’s Real Great Britain (lyrics above).
Final one from me; New Way New Life:
musically, that have had more impact upon, or have been more eloquent voices of the politics of their times, without having Bob Dylan and Joan Baez at the top of the list.
Live 1976: Rolling Thunder Revue Tour…

I agree, and when going back there, would add Neil Young to that list.
I heard this on Satellite radio the other day and love the words:
Don’t know how to embed a YouTube video but here’s the link: Link
Good morning SN and thanks for the link. I liked that one.
Fell asleep last night as I was responding to your comment and explaining YouTube embedding. Very simple, really; to the right of the video you watch are two boxes – one named ‘URL’ and the other ‘Embed’. Simply copy/paste the code in ‘Embed’ to your comment (without adding anything!).
Thanks, ask – sounds easy enough even for me! 🙂
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

I hope anyone coming through ‘Recent Comments’ will follow back to your comment and click that video link.
Thanks, dada!
It’s not really a political song, at least I don’t think so, but it could apply.
