Hi keres and AndiF!
First day of school here for CBtY…
Little Pied Cormorants.
Great picture. Where did you take that one?
I took it today, while walking Luna at a park just north of Hobart (called the Montrose Foreshore Reserve). It’s right on the Derwent River and there are always plenty of water birds there.
It’s Luna’s favorite park because it’s a designated dog exercise park and lots of people bring their dogs to walk there.
Sounds like big dog fun….water, birds, and more dogs. All you need is scooby snacks.
Today there was even a dead cockatoo to roll in, although I drew the line at rolling in a very dead washed-up cormorant in front of the Derwent Entertainment Centre. There’s only so much fun a dog can have and still hope to get back in the car for the ride home.
I was wondering about the smelly things to roll in, but was afraid to ask. 😉
Our shih tzu would be in heaven there.
Shorelines are always good for a roll. High tide invariably leaves something smelly behind. I should mention that what most Tasmanians call the Derwent River is for most of it’s length actually a very large estuary. There’s been talk of renaming it to reflect that.
And the ice cream only melted a little moving over.
(And Jim offers his sympathies on the start of school)
I like my ice cream “a little melted”. Which reminds me, we have ice cream in the freezer!
Now if only ManEe would return from his exotic travels…We made his salsa with fresh tomoatoes this weekend. Yum.
(Tell Jim we got a new alarm clock, and the little man got himself up this morning. All I had to do was make lunch, smile, and wave good bye. 🙂 )
I’m thinking I should maybe walk early today, since I’m up. Hmm.
It’s finally light enough for me to go.
Ta.
Hippo Birdie, Manny
or is Thursday HD on a short week?
Morning Andi.
The important thing is that Imogen gets home tomorrow. Woohoo!
yay for you — and for Albert who probably who get some nice alone time as a result. 😉
Good morning, Andi and keres!
or is Thursday HD on a short week?
I think it is, I am still mentally on Tuesday…
Yeah, short weeks do screw with one’s calendar sense. I think we should have more of them so we can learn to adjust better.
Absolutely brilliant idea, Andi.
A resounding Yes! to the increased prevalence of 4-day work weeks.
I woke up thinking today was Thursday for some reason…
Woo-hoo! It’s Day 2 for CBtY, and he’s already on the bus.
Speaking of short weeks, we get another one next week for the holiday.
Good morning, CG.
Holiday next week?
The public school gets off for Rosh Hashanah.
How are the asklets?
Good for them.
The asklets are good, back to school yesterday. The young one grew in the 8 weeks I did not see them.
8 weeks is a long time at that age. When CBtE went off for a month earlier this year, I was shocked at how much he had changed – taller, thinner, and with a deeper voice.
You get Rosh Hashanah off?
Yeah, we’re very enlightened here, aren’t we? 🙂
I am impressed. My high school was about 15% jewish but they never closed down for us (though teachers usually were pretty good about not giving homework during Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur).
My private elementary school gave us off for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur too. From what I remember, I think my 7th grade class was about 30% Jewish.
With my arrival I guess it’s time for Andi to take her morning trek, Ask to leave for work and CG to go back to bed.
Good morning, SN!
I’m home today 🙂
But it is soon time for a walk and a croissant for breakfast.
Oh goody – I’m fortunate to have caught you then. 🙂
Actually, I’m not going back to bed. I’ll be here for a bit until I head out for my walk this morning. What are you up to? Is your weather cooler?
The weather is NOT cooler and I have some diagnostic testing going on this morning in preparation for a bit of outpatient surgery. The fun never stops.
Hope all is well, SN.
I had some of that yesterday, but very simple – mole removal.
Nothing seems simple when it involves yourself, does it?
Glad you came through it okay and hopefully got a colorful sticker or a pretzel or something for your bravery.
Surgery sucks. I hope all your testing goes smoothly (and on time. I hate waiting rooms, don’t you?) today.
I won’t bother telling you about our chilly weather, then.
Chilly weather?!…nooooooo.
I’m not afraid of the procedure, I just hate that deep sedation they do….it makes me so barfy and groggy for hours afterward.
Yuck.
Well, I have a doglet looking up at me, wondering when she’s going to get her walk, so I’m out of here. Good luck today!
But now I’m back.
Good morning.
Just flew in from Atlanta, and boy are my arms tired.
Happy belated birthday, Manny!
Hey boran!
..and boy are my arms tired
It took me a while – I was thinking excess luggage.
Guess your vacation is over.
Sadly so, ask.
Thanks, everyone! Still galavanting in SoCal, getting ready to shift gears down to Baja California. Can’t wait for the tour of taquerias that I intend on taking later today.
Hilarious pic, btw. Thank ewe kindly!
Hey Manny!
I must have missed the announcement, but it seems you’re on vacation. Hope you enjoy big time!
since it was up for debate whether Wednesday or Thursday is Hump Day on a short week.
Morning/Afternoon/Evening All.
Good morning, Andi!
I’m all for YAYAHD.
I’d rather it was TFSMIF but it’s good when YAHD is just a day before.
Hi Andi and ask.
I’ve got about half-an-hour before I have to leave for the airport to pick up Imogen. Her flight doesn’t get in until 10:25pm, so Luna and I are just marking time until then. We usually get to the airport about a half hour early and take a walk along the entry way, which is very tree-filled and apparently full of great smells.
Good evening, keres!
Happy reunion – she seems to travel a bit lately, or is my memory making that up?
She’ll go several month without any out-of-state travel, but then there will be months like this one where she’s gone a lot. She’s still got one more trip this month – the week after next. Luckily, I have the critters for company.
Safe and very happy journey.
Have you gotten any rain?
We’ve had a great week – sunny, dry and moderate temperatures.
No rain. It’s now been 7 weeks. And it’s been in the 90s almost the whole time. Now I hate summer but I hate this summer like no other summer I’ve ever hated.
to Andi, ask, and keres (and whoever else may have snuck in).
Well, somebody’s school grumpiness is beginning to set in. CBtE went off to school this morning grumbling and wearing a t-shirt that says “Had enough of No Child Left Behind?” (a freebie from the yearly big orange)
Wonder how that will go over. We noticed that the Howdy Doody picture of Bush that has been prominently displayed in the MS office entry for years has been removed. Guess the new principal doesn’t think George is someone for young people to emulate…
Jim’s condolences to CBtE.
I’m off to walk in the woods. See you out there? 🙂
Condolences to Jim as well.
I’ll probably be about a half-hour behind you. Need my coffee first… 🙂
Did I mention that I will already be hitting the 20-mile mark for this week today?
Good morning all.
I think I’ve probably missed everyone again today.
Happy belated B’day Manny.
Hope everyone is well this morning.
Morning, FM. You slept late and the world didn’t stop spinning without you? Whoda thunk?
I think I must still be asleep. Everybody knows the world can keep spinning unless I’m awake.
How’re you doing today?
I’m peachy today. Tests went well. Now if it would just cool off and rain. There is a little disturbance out in the Atlantic that they think might turn into a little tropical storm and hit NC….and I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Glad to hear about the test. We’ve had thunderstorms popping up all around us, but nothing here. I’m ready for a week long rain.
I’m in the middle of “Adventures in Home Repair” today. I’m trying to fix a leaky commode and I found out that my s-i-l had painted in the BR a while back. This included the water faucet. I’ve been trying for the last 15 minutes to get that unstuck. There’s always one little thing that holds you up. 🙂
Well back to home repair, which BTW I hate.
Back to work. Ugh.
Morning Boran.
Now go ahead and admit it. You were looking forward to getting back to work. 🙂
TFSMIF!
That is all.
We must have been typing at the same time. 🙂
Is it Friday already?
As much as you haven’t been sleeping, you’ve probably been awake enough hours for it to be next Friday.
Yep I could agree. It’s all George’s fault. He decided he wanted to go out around 1:00 am so I stayed up. I’ve got to get the trash out to the curb this morning, and then it’s nap time for me.
Do you have any big plans for the w/e, or are you chopping wood again.
Wood is basically done — we had one piece to go when the splitter’s hydraulic hose cracked so once we replace it we’ve got five minutes of splitting to go and then we’re done for the season.
We’ve got two fireplaces here at the house, but they haven’t been used for a long time. Before we could even think of building a fire, we would have to have a chimney sweep come and clean it out. Nothing like watching your house burn because of a dirty chimney.
Building a fire in a fireplace is work so I’d think it would be a no-go just on those grounds.
Yeah if it involves work then I’ll put on a coat. So much more slackerly that way.
It’s supposed to be a decent day weather wise. Low 90s. Going grocery shopping today. Woo Hoo!
Good morning, FM and Andi!
Another beauty in NY. Currently 70 and clear.
Morning ask.
I could do with a nice cool/clear day. Do ya’ll have any big plans for the w/e?
No big plans. With the kids back in town, it’s back to the usual schedule. Young asklet with me, his big sister too busy with her own plans.
A lot of people don’t like a schedule, but if I get thrown off my routine, it takes me forever to get caught up. There’s something comforting about a routine.
Morning ask. It’s cooled off to the upper 80s here — not great but better than the 90s. There’s a chance of rain today (and a thin line on the radar) but there was yesterday too and all we got was 10 minutes so I’m not counting on anything.
I cross my fingers for your area and will it to rain.
Thanks. I’ve got the dogs crossing their paws, too.
I’m off to get the trash to the curb, and then it’s nap time for me.
Everyone have a good day in the pond.
Happy nap time, FM.
Hi everybody!
Andi, I hope you get your rain. It looks like it might rain here today too. I think I might be doing the short loop walk this morning (4 miles instead of five), although my goal was to walk a whole marathon this week, and that will leave me 2.1 miles short…
FM, have a nice nap. I feel like I keep missing you every morning.
Ask, I know how you feel re Busy older child. CBtE has his plans with his friends all the time, and CBtY hangs with the Ps instead.
We’re almost done the first week of school- Hallelujah. Just have orientation for CBtE tomorrow afternoon, and he starts Monday.
Hi all.
As evidenced by the blue glue still stuck to my hands, I’ve been laying rainwater pipe today. The length from the house to the tank is done (about 160ft/50mtrs). Next I’ll be putting together all of the connections to the gutters. Some of that will be above ground, and the rest will be under the house. I bet you can already tell which one I want to do least.
We’re having lovely weather, and just today we spotted half-a-dozen or so Welcome Swallows (come back from the mainland).
G’day Keres. When I find myself awake at such an ungodly hour, it’s good to see a friend from the other side of the world here in the cafe. I’m still dreaming of emigrating to Tasmania – love the idea of living in a place with the word ‘mania’ in its name.
How do you put down your coffee cup with glue on your hands?
How do you put down your coffee cup with glue on your hands?
Easy, I don’t drink coffee.
Actually, a pot scrubber gets it all off, eventually.
Yeah, I like the “mania” part of the name as well. Australia is pretty open to immigration, you should check out the Australian Department of Immigration to see if you’d qualify. If you seriously wanted to check out Tasmania, you’d be welcome to stay with us for a bit. Tasmania definitely has the advantage of having a mild climate and plenty of water, so that global warming isn’t too likely to make us too hot or too dry. Also, there’s a lot of farming in Tasmania, which means that it’s a good place to get locally produced food.
Plus, Luna and Albert are there.
Plus, Luna and Albert are there.
Well, I don’t like to brag . . . .
Because broccoli is the only green thing our friends (Milo’s people and our local market gardeners) currently have sale, and our ducks and chickens are in full laying mode, we’re having broccoli quiche for dinner. Mmmmmm.
How’s your Saturday looking? Ours was gorgeous.
I am desperately hoping for awful weather — there’s a 80% chance of rain today (yesterday there was a 70% chance and it did rain … for all of 10 minutes).
(Dinner sounds good. I love broccoli.)
We’ve got a little tropical storm off the coast but it isn’t forecast to bring any rain this far inland…drats! We are now in a “severe” drought and I can’t remember the last time it stayed below 90. Everything is brown and dusty and I’m afraid it’s going to be a really drab fall.
We’ve other dry spells before but nothing that came close to this combination of no-rain and high temps. It’s really getting to me. The temps are supposed to drop out the 90s this week all the way down to the upper 70s so that will be nice. There’s some rain in the forecast but every time it’s been forecast over the last 7 weeks, none has shown up.
The leaves are already dead and coming off the trees here. And a lot of those that are left are shriveled.
Same here with the leaves. It looks like Fall but it sure doesn’t feel like it. I guess you have to take your walk before it gets too hot these days.
Yeah the merchants around here who expect big crowds in the Fall probably aren’t going to get their usual busloads of leaf-lookers.
I’ve been walking when it’s still almost dark — it’s a trade-off between breaking my neck stumbling over downed branches or dying of dehydration. 🙁
Speaking of which, I’m way late in getting started and it’s already 77.
See ya later.
I’m sending you all very soggy thoughts.
Broccoli is my favorite vegetable, which is a good thing because we are sure eating a lot of it right now. The broccoli in our garden got munched by either a rabbit or a possum, but it’s starting to come back, along with one pitiful head of cauliflower. We just planted some spinach and some little broccolinis. Soon we’ll be putting in beans, peas and the like. I can’t wait to get the tomatoes going – they’re my summer-time favorite food. We plant the heritage varieties and buy the big field tomatoes from our market gardening friends.
This year, the plan is to get a canning set-up and start putting up enough tomato sauce for the rest of the year. We could also can apricots and peaches, as they are both grown in our little town and are fairly cheap for the short time they are available. We’ll see how we go.
