Front paging this because its too important to let it get sidetracked by the phony debate about the surge and Petraeus. Steven D
It’s been a couple of months since we last looked in on the status of S.185, and with congress now back in session, today seemed as good a time as any.
Well, I’m sorry to report, nothing much has changed. It appears the restoration of habeas corpus is a low priority issue in the senate.
Current status:
6/26/2007:
Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders. Calendar No. 220.
One more senator has signed on, Mark Pryor [D-AR], bringing the number of co-sponsors to 30, but there are still a large number of d‘s mia. Considering this ought to be a slam dunk, no brainer, l would certainly like to know what their reasoning is for not supporting it.
Here’s the list of democratic senators who still haven’t signed on:
Daniel Akaka (D-HI)
Max Baucus (D-MT)
Evan Bayh (D-IN)
Robert Casey (D-PA)
Kent Conrad (D-ND)
Byron Dorgan (D-ND)
Daniel Inouye (D-HI)
Tim Johnson (D-SD)
Herb Kohl (D-WI)
Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
Blanche Lincoln (D-AR)
Barbara Mikulski (D-MD)
Patty Murray (D-WA)
Ben Nelson (D-NE)
Jack Reed (D-RI)
Harry Reid (D-NV)
Charles Schumer (D-NY)
Jon Tester (D-MT)
James Webb (D-VA)
Ron Wyden (D-OR)
I’m asking, once again, for everyone to contact their Senator if they have not signed on to co-sponsor this bill, and to contact Sen. Reid and encourage him to bring it to the floor for a vote.

Either the Democrats are going to change soon to reflect their base supporters and the concerns of in dependents who lean progressive, or they will melt down like the Whig party of old.
Make those calls folks.
indeed, call, email, go by their office and register your support of this measure in person…do something…it is important.
this should be bipartisan, there ought to be 100 signatures on this bill.
where are the others, and why they haven’t stepped forward to vigorously support this restoration of one of the corner stones of our constitution and rule of law? the lack of support is completely incomprehensible to me.
and thanks for bumping it, steven, much appreciated.
