When I first started blogging, I thought I’d end up writing about space travel more often. I grew up reading more science fiction than my parents and teachers thought was healthy, and always hoped that it would be possible to travel in space, myself.
So, Google and the Ansari X Prize Foundation are now offering up to $30 million for a successful lunar landing mission carried out with private financing. Go read all about it, because this is some wicked cool stuff.
It was only about 1998 or so that the rules were changed to permit private spaceflight. Not even a decade later, people are doing it. It warms the geekiest cockles of my heart.
Prior reports that I’ve read indicate that Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico is to be the center of the new private space industry. Really.
I was raised on Sci-Fi and the moon landings. I have the fever. I remember the chills running up and down my spine when the Eagle landed on the moon. A lot of it was nationalist fervor but a healthier competition then war at least. I check the latest pictures from the Mars Rovers several times a week. Soon Virgin Galactic will be offering sub-orbital flights to tourists$$$. If only….
