Madonna’s love may be on the borderline, but apparently her rock credentials aren’t.
The Queen of Pop joined a disparate group of artists on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame shortlist, a ballot that includes the Beastie Boys, John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen and another music royal, Queen of Disco Donna Summer, for the Cleveland class of 2008.
Rounding out the nominees, which were announced Friday: Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, the Dave Clark Five, and the Ventures.
An act becomes eligible for induction 25 years after its first release, be it single, EP or album. That means the current contenders had to have issued their inaugural record no later than 1982.

The Ventures-that was some cool music. And I loved the Dave Clark 5……..well still do for that matter.
I don’t give a shit until they start holding the induction ceremonies in Cleveland so the people who paid for the damn thing get to see it.

BTW, the sound goes all the way to “pain” with absolutely no distortion.
When I was much younger, I used to wish I had a system like that in the house. Some songs I just could crank loud enough.
madonna deserves mad creds for making herself into a superstar, again and again, despite having almost no singing or acting talent.

Rock and Roll, as a genre, isn’t really about singing talent. It’s about attitude. Madonna has plenty of that. I say she deserves it. Does she deserve it NOW, before some of the other nominees — that’s another matter.
I agree with the other poster about The Ventures being cool.
BTW, based on the criteria for nomination, in about 5 years, it’s possible that all nominees could be completely unknown to me (as are some of the current ones).
if leonard cohen doesn’t get in, the canadians are going to consider it an act of terraism.
he’s had a tremendous influence on music…and it’s way past time to acknowledge it.

Leonard Cohen, rock and roll? I mean, I’m a big fan of his, he’s a great songwriter (how ‘about “Democracy” and “I have seen the future, it is murder”?), but he’s not rock and roll. But what the hell, let ’em all in. The Ventures should have been there when they opened up the place, and The Dave Clark Five were incredible. The kids don’t understand.

That was my thought also..why in the hell aren’t they already there. Since seeing their name yesterday I’ve had various songs of theirs running through my head..Wipeout, Apache, Walk Don’t Run, Tequila and so on. Now if I didn’t have this damn dial-up I could go to Youtube and listen to some of their old recordings instead of playing them only in my head. Having dial-up now is like only having access to half the Internet.

the E channel, the one that uses X for eXtra(ah, the market power of sex) featured the extravaganza that was Playboy’s establishment of a tower of sin in Las Vegas. I commented to my wife, God did that Huge Heffner guy get to drink of the fountain of youth drug AND, for all of this “feminism” movement in this country the marketing gurus still classify women as sexual objects in their marketing efforts. Boy, did women get screwed when they got conned into entering the workforce in order to become “equals”. I mean that is just about as great a con job as Europe is socialist because they actually get some services out of their tax dollars.
