Progress Pond

Mission Accomplished. Again

Know how our conservative compatriots long for the good old days of the Cold War, before nuclear arms agreements and the collapse of the Soviet Union allowed that particular existential threat to “our freedoms” to just slowly fade away? Well, thanks to Our Dear Leader there’s new hope for reigniting a nuclear arms race that will bring back the golden years of the 1950’s when every American child learned to “duck and cover” under their school desks in preparation for getting their little behinds blown to kingdom come, and a certain USAF general advocated a nuclear first strike against the Communist Menance.

You see, Bush’s good friend and soul mate, Vladimer Putin, let slip the other day that Russia is officially back in the nuclear weapons business, and is planning all new models to be rolled off the Russki production lines in the coming years. How lucky is that?

President Vladimir Putin said today that Russia is developing new types of nuclear weapons.

Mr Putin said during a live televised phone-in that the new missiles were part of a “grandiose” plan to boost Russian defences, Reuters reported.

“We will develop missile technology including completely new strategic [nuclear] complexes,” he said in the annual phone-in, in which Russians can question him directly. […]

He also said work on the new missiles was “continuing successfully”.

“We have plans that are not only big, but grandiose; they are fully realistic,” he said. “Our armed forces will be more compact but more effective and better ensure Russia defence.”

Bush’s policy of stationing missile defense systems in Eastern Europe has been a rousing success. They may not do much against the currently non-existent (but still much hyped by Our Dear Leader) nuclear threat from “little fish” Iran, but it did accomplish one major goal: another nuclear arms race with our old comrades, the Russians. This way, no matter what happens in Iraq, the financial security of our military-industrial complex will be safe for many years to come. Better buy those Defense Industry stocks now for your IRA or 401K plan, because the prices are just going to keep going up and up and up for the foreseeable future.

And isn’t that the way it was meant to be? Good thing I’m not a conspiracy theorist or I might think this had been Cheney’s President Bush’s plan all along.

Ps. If you are thinking things will change once the Democrats retake the White House, think again:

The defense industry this year abandoned its decade-long commitment to the Republican Party, funneling the lion share of its contributions to Democratic presidential candidates, especially to Hillary Clinton who far out-paced all her competitors. […]

Senator Clinton took in $52,600, more than half of the total going to all Democrats, and a figure equaling 60 percent of the sum going to the entire GOP field. . . .
