The Chicago Tribune notices the Bush Dog campaign and reports on Mark Pera’s primary challenge to Dan Lipinski. You should take notice, too. We’re going to beat a lot of Republicans in 2008. We are going to beat them like a drum…like a red-headed step child. Want evidence? One…count it, one Democratic congresswoman, Kirsten Gillebrand (NY-25) has more cash-on-hand right now than the entire National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). The NRCC is responsible for contesting 435 races. They can’t even compete with one freshman Democrat. It’s astonishing. But, do you know what that means? It means that the Democrats don’t need your help right now. What they need is your boot…your boot…in their ass. The most important race in 2006 was the Democratic senatorial primary, where Ned Lamont told Joe Lieberman to get the fuck out of the Democratic Party and to stay the fuck out. That election set the tone and gave our challengers the courage and gumption to absolutely take it to the Republican incumbents. Screw the consultants…who were these challengers going to believe? Rahm Emanuel or their lying eyes?
And it’s not even just about putting a boot in the Democrats’ asses. It’s about getting a better breed of Democrat in Congress so they can deal with the half-ass oatmeal Democratic presidency of, most likely, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Progressives don’t have any motivation to lift a finger for her. But we have a lot of motivation to kick out DLC Democrats that stand to take over the whole party again, if she wins.
I’m beaten down. I’m frustrated. And I’m not going to ask anyone to go out an bust their ass for any Democrat that isn’t fighting for our rights, to end this war, and to hold criminals responsible for their actions. Lipinski isn’t doing shit. He’s a disgrace. And he has a primary challenger. I want this race in the worst way. I want to bounce Dan Lipinski out on his pocket meat. Lipinski is a no rape, no incest exception, anti-choice asshole who takes money from the Back America’s Conservatives PAC. No shit.
Lipinski is against stem-cell research. He’s against ending the war in Iraq. He’s $25,000 in debt to energy lobbyists.
I want him gone. I want him to be politically humiliated. And I want every other Bush Dog to tremble in fear when they see what happens to this guy.
I’m sorry. I’m fed up. And a lot of other people are fed up, too. You can tell from the reception Chris Dodd received for just showing a pulse last week.
Senator Dodd’s campaign communications director Hari Sevugan tells me that $150,000 in small contributions have poured into Dodd’s campaign in the past 24 hours, since his announcement that he will put a hold on–and may even filibuster–a foreign intelligence surveillance bill approved yesterday by the Senate Intelligence Committee…
Dodd has raised more small-dollar contributions in the last 24 hours than he did in the previous month. Sevugan also says the number of visits to his website is up tenfold, as is the number of people registering their e-mail addresses there.
That’s some pent-up political energy right there. Dodd also jumped from 7% to 21% (and second place) in this month’s Daily Kos straw poll. Contribute to his campaign. Hell…I don’t care if you like Edwards or Obama better…make sure we have a candidate that is sticking up for us in the race.
I know you are pissed off. Channel that energy. It’s time to get serious about punishing DEMOCRATS!!
Here, Here!
I can’t be more pleased with Dodd’s success. It shows everyone else the power of standing firm in your principles. You (i>will(/i> be rewarded if you do it!
I love a good rant…as you can tell from my name…can we have this on the front page for the next year?
I have no bad democrats to fight against in my District, only bad Republicans, unfortunately. Louise Slaughter is close by, but I don’t favor a challenge to her, she’s already as progressive a Representative as we are likely to get in upstate NY.
But if you have bad dems in your district, have at them. the real problem as I see it is recruiting more progressive candidates and convincing them a challenge is feasible.
Absolutely: the democrats (and the GOP) need to be punished when they do wrong, and a LOT of them are doing wrong.
Do you know that every time I send out the DL bulletin I call casey’s office, read it to them and then explain it went out the 750 philadelphia dems and progressives?
I’ll drop a couple of bucks on pera next week (pay day): I’ve already given some to blue america for that SCHIP ad targeting Jim Marshall. He’s another shitter that has to be kicked out.
Marshall has, at least, the excuse that his district is conservative and that he barely won his last election.
We need to fight for the soul of our party, that means fighting well selected primary battles. The obvious one is the presidential primary, but also targeting the “Bush Dogs” who have sold our rights for glass beads. Particularly those who are in safe democratic seats.
I don’t want to become an intolerant party. I still think that moderates are a good thing, but centrists are a different and dangerous animal. We don’t need sellouts or those who do not value our rights and our interests.
I hate to quote Barry Goldwater but moderation in the defense of liberty is not a virtue.
True, enough, but I do appreciate the bi-partisan gesture in quoting Goldwater. I am not saying that I want to be a moderate when I grow up, but that I would rather our politicians represent a continuum of political opinion. I do not oppose moderates for being moderate, but I do oppose them for failing to defend our liberty.
to me, a moderate is a crook that cares about the environment, or a guy that supports labor unions but wants to criminalize women’s health. What is a moderate to you?
AMEN.
Dodd isn’t my top candidate, but he sure got my attention last week, and he got a donation from me too. I want to see Democrats — especially candidates! — standing up and speaking out, sounding and acting like Democrats for a change. I am very glad we have candidates like Dodd and Kucinich in the race as well as Obama and Edwards — because they are driving the debate and the issues in the direction they need to go. Even if they don’t get many delegates or have a hope at the nomination, they are making a difference in the race.
And who knows? Dodd could turn things around a lot more and surprise everyone. Nothing is set in stone yet.
I do live in a district where we are challenging a “reformed” but-not-really-progressive Democrat — Al Wynn — with a true progressive, Donna Edwards. She came within a recount margin of beating him in 2006, coming in practically unknown. Wynn has a lot of support from Pelosi and lobbyist money. To be fair, he’s been voting a much more progressive line this session (nearly losing his “safe” seat will do that), but we could do much better. This is a solidly Democratic and progressive district, we deserve a progressive Democrat as our representative. Kos has Donna Edwards on the DKos Act Blue page, and that will help a lot.
One district at a time, we will get there.
Al Wynn is a certain breed of Democrat that has grown up over the last 40 years. There only maybe a half dozen in Congress…the type that represents really poor folks and will vote for the bankruptcy bill. We got his attention last time. And he is voting like he should. But I won’t cry at all if he is replaced by Donna Edwards. I’ll be thrilled.
Really? So do I. We should trade e-mail.
Speaking of “reformed” candidates, did you see that newsletter (or whatever type of piece it was) where he was posing with…
…wait for it…
DENNIS KUCINICH?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I thought I’d hurt myself, I laughed so hard. In fact, the very thought of it makes me laugh right now. Let me get back to work…!!
Wynn is one of the cosponsors of Kucinich’s Impeach Cheney bill. So the photo-op makes sense.
I do suspect that Wynn signed on because (1) he knew it would make him look good and “tough” in the district, and (2) he believes the bill will never get to the floor, or put his career at risk.
Oh, yes–that’s absolutely the political calculus.
But damn, was it ever funny. Wynn’s a lot of things, but stupid isn’t one of them.
Not one vote has been cast yet for the 2008 election. Hillary is not inevitable. Other than that, well said.
Yeah, I know she isn’t inevitable, but she’s on a roll and she doesn’t make many mistakes.
