The wildfires are really out of control.

new western thread.
One thing that was clear was that the local media coverage of these fires was pathetic. To much studio, to much stadium (where many evacuees were), and very little actually detailed maps of where the fires WERE at that time. One announcer actually held up a Thomas Brothers map to show where! Geeze, even football announcers can draw on screens.
Another thing that got me to switch channels was the constant criticism (by the media) of those who chose to ignore warnings to leave so they could try to save their homes. EVEN WHEN THEY ACTUALLY SAVED THEM! One guy had the forsight to actually have purchased a fire hose, with nozzle. He hooked it up and was spraying down his house as the fire blazed next door and the broadcaster called him selfish for not leaving! One scene that was shown (I saw it repeated on CNN) was of a fireman yelling at some guy on his porch to finally leave. It was used as an example of firemen having to go get these people, and what a waste of resources. What they did NOT tell you was that was the only house saved in the neighborhood, because the owner stayed! These people were not demanding help from an overstretched fire department (like many who fled were), they were doing it themselves!
Anyway, the worst is over. Here is hoping the evacuees are out of the stadium by the 4th, because I am supposed to race my car there that day.
Does not seem to be many westerners here, so I will talk to myself!

An EXCELLENT editorial!
This is the stuff we need to start popping up all over the country.

I bet Boo is all happy.
We got 30 minutes on the Giants win on TV.
Don’t mind me talking to myself;
‘It’s a habit of the old to talk to the wisest person present’
a dewy button to the person who can tell me what book that quote comes from.

I had to watch the Eagles.
It was Gandalf in TTT.
(Google is my friend.)
What kind of a button is a dewy button?
So you get to race at the stadium…
You got it! (I can’t believe google had it)
Now I have to figure out how to get you your button.
BTW, what does ITMFA mean?
nalbar
impeach the motherfucker already.
AHHHHH
Thanks.
Nice to see the rodentia still hanging around the place.
I’m still wondering about the dewy button. As in truman vs? That would be something!
Well I ain’t in the west, but hope it’s okay if I hang out and eavesdrop on Nalbar’s conversation.
Fascinating – and there’s even prizes!
I’m celebrating the survival of all my S. Cal friends this week. The ‘death and destruction’ news was coming too close.
It’s a colloquialism dealing with the Dewey vs Truman election. After the assumed Dewey victory did not happen the phrase “It’s not worth a Dewey button” became a joke.

I drove a small part of the fire zone yesterday and it is amazing how much area it covers. Miles and miles.
You really have to see it to believe what a great job firefighters do on these brush fires. Much of it is like the surface of the moon, with a highway going through it.
And then right in the middle of the devastation, a house, totally untouched, with charred ruin right up to their door. This is repeated HUNDREDS of times.
It’s amazing.

Every other region gets posts and discussions except the West.
This is quite ironic when you consider that everything east of the rockies would still be wilderness if Columbus had landed in Los Angeles.
😉
I wonder if it means Booland is west member deficient. This would not be surprising when you consider how conservative many parts of Cali are.

There are a bunch of us left coasters, but we’re just more mellow than the rest of the country. Maybe something in that fine herb we grow. ;>)
I have no idea what you are talking about. Herb? Are you going oregano?

Just a picture of the fires I was sent.
I raced at the stadium Sunday and I let a friend co-drive my car so he could get his mind off his house. The houses on both sides of his burned to the ground, his was saved. Only his living room burned. The fire deptment told him they had passed him by because it looked gone but an extra truck showed at the last SECOND and ran into his house and put it out.
Lucky.

Hol-ey moley that is some photo. Whereabouts is this neighborhood?
I think it is near Chula Vista. All the housing tracks in SoCal look alike. For all I know it might be Poway and that house right in the middle is my friends.

I lived in San Diego County, several different areas, for many years. Spent a lot of time in the desert. Went to community college out there on Otay Lakes Road. This is just sad.
Good lord, the Chargers are terrible. All the local forums blame the quarterback to some extent, and can’t seem to grasp that the Chargers have a terrible coach. Any decent coach changes his game plan to account for his players skills. When your quarterback struggles you call plays that he can make so his confidence grows. More running plays for instance. Particularly when you have the best in the game at that position.
I have come to the conclusion the Norv Turner does not have the ability to design a good running game. Everything with the Chargers feeds off that.
Before the season I read a prognostication on the Chargers that said they were an 8-8 team because Norv Turner was a terrible stratigist. He could not adjust on the fly during games. I did not believe it. Now I believe it.

and it’s a big but…but there appears to be a fly in the ointment in regards to Dieblold/Premier’s conditional approval.
seems that coffman, who’s running for tancredo’s congressional seat, has got some ‘splainin’ to do:
a RATpub conflicted? who’da thunk.

another rumor is that he’s going to shift towards the Senate seat. blech
blech is right. that particular rumor’s been floating around up here for a while, and jist of the cw, is that it would hurt schaffer more than udall.
or he could renege on his word again, and run for his house seat.

All these guys are like bad pennies, they never go away.
The ones that drop out will probably help fake news broadcast the convention.
