I think it’s great that Cindy Sheehan is running as an independent against Nancy Pelosi. Sure, it’s a lost cause. But it makes a statement. More people need to make statements.

I wrote a blog a month or so back that Matt Gonzales, who’s Nader’s running mate, could have actually put a lot of pressure on Pelosi from the left if he’d run against her. He is actually an accomplished politician locally, in the Green Party, having been head of the Board of Supervisors San Francisco (whence came Feinstein once upon a time) and was within a couple of percentage points of winning the mayorship against Gavin Newsom.
Pelosi’s district is completely within San Francisco, so all the voters are easily within public transportation. Gonzales could have run against Pelosi for the failures of the Democrats since she’s been speaker. It actually would have been fun, because San Francisco is one of the few places in America where Pelosi could be turned out of office for being too conservative.
Alas.
well, cindy hopes so. but they’d be nuts to vote the speaker out.
The Dem power structure in N.CA is very powerful; Pelosi is the hand-picked successor of the famous families that control Dem politics and money there. They would use every dirty trick and backroom tactic to keep Nancy Nothing in office. I think Cindy’s try is indicative of the 50-state strategy, and a good thing, regardless of party affiliation or small chance of winning.
i wish we had candidates who could make “statements” in races that they could win.
i imagine when Pelosi beats Cindy, the press will say, “see, the anti-war view has crashed and burned…its over.”
that is the problem i have with her race.
Just a second folks. The way this year is going, anything could happen. And, if Bush, the younger, foments a war with Iran and the Middle East goes completely nuts and/or a depression happens, Sheehan might win her race and not just in SF. Don’t forget there is some 60%+ of the voting population against the war. When leaders dither, like now, in the face of incredible, soul-crushing difficulties, why, it may be time to just get new leaders.
By Nov 2008, incumbency may be a disadantage.
Things that you are afraid will happen, happen.
It is clearly obvious that impeachment should be, and should have been, on the table.
This is grand standing at it’s worst just because Pelosi would not start impeachment proceedings. Starting impeachment proceedings would have been a total waste of time as they did not have the votes in the Senate needed to impeach Bush or Cheney. Yes, I would like to see them both impeached but anyone with half a brain knew it would not happen without 60 votes in the Senate.
I think Cindy is a fine and courageous person . . . and I don’t think she has a chance in hell. Single issue candidates seldom do.
hey Boo- what did you think of the Moyer interview?
I wish Sheehan had primaried Pelosi BEFORE Pelosi became Speaker. She could have made quite a splash in 2006. And pushed Pelosi left. Tried to make it happen, but obviously failed.
This time … not so helpful. Sheehan is running outside the Dems. There is also Shirley Golub who is energetically contesting Pelosi inside the Dems.
All too late though. Even leftish San Franciscans are jazzed to have the Speaker.
