Harold Ford Jr., appearing on MSNBC, seemed more pissed than happy that Barack Obama has won the nomination. All he talked about was how great McCain’s speech was (and I literally almost fell asleep during McCain’s speech) and how hard it is to run against a guy that’s tough on defense and wants to cut taxes. It looked like the specialness of the moment for people that look like Ford Jr. was totally lost on him and all he cared about was that the DLC just got obliterated like they were Iran or sumthin’.
Now Clinton is speaking.
she isn’t conceding anything with that bullshit.
No, no she’s not. She didn’t really even congratulate him. It’s all sort of roundabout speak.
Of course. Always classy.
As Borat would say, ‘Not’.
Sarcasm, Dear Boo. I think you may still be a little groggy from the McCain speech.
Every time she mentions her website all I can hear is give me money, send me money, pay off my campaign debt. (I hear it is now in the range of $40M). Hillary supporters are being told to send in $89 in honor of her mother’s birthday. Campaign finance laws are a bitch!
Yup.
What I heard was “Sell your kids’ bicycles and video games and give me money. That’s what I want.”
And this song played…
The poor kid’s bike and video games paid for the confetti at her victory celebration in WVA.
our long national nightmare is finally over.
I’m not so sure. Sounds like she’s not done – talking about how she’s still more electable and what not…ugh.
Think about how ugly that speech was. She lost and refused to admit it. Repeated her talking points. Me. Me. Me.
Take some time off, Barack, and let her twist in the wind. Have everyone else embrace your candidacy and let her stew for awhile.
I wish it was so easy for Billary. They represent a very wealthy cadre of global capitalists, from Switzerland to Singapore, and they aren’t going to just suck it up and lick their wounds. They are compelled by the vast power of the elite, the Davos crowd. They are not in this for personal gain or public service, they are the representative tool of global capital elites.
Isis, I could not agree more with you. You know who I feel sorry for? The suckers who think it’s about gender. It’s about money.
I know you’re not a fan of Obama either. Just consider that he’s the best and measure his worth by how hard Hillary and her backers want to destroy him.
Thanks Bob,
Vigilance!
My girlfriend wondered who the Republican asshole was. It was Ford.
I’m getting fried sitting here waiting for Hillary to concede. People are chanting, “Yes, she will.”
This is exactly what I suspected we’d get from H. Clinton. She could have been gracious. She’s whipping up her followers. Now it’s about respect. I’m going to have a drink and play Madden 08 and maybe when I’m done she’ll be gone.
I said it today. She’s not going to concede.
She’s going to suspend and extort.
Exactly. I am so tired of her. She’s going to have to redeem herself somehow, and this is not a very good start.
Like I said, she’s in in for her people. For those 109,000,000 reasons.
You know, you could have been a little classy on the way out.
No.
Aravosis reported tonight that she had the effing gall to say, no I don’t want to be Veep, but don’t you dare offer it to another woman.
Tweety or Timmeh is suggesting that she has 18 million people to hold over his head as voters or supporters that he cannot win without her.
This is total BS. He doesn’t need her as an intercessor. He can go over her head, and she can go down in flames.
And that thing about having a say-so over who’s Veep, if it’s not her, is also total BS. She has no power. She’s broke. Ickes and Bill are running this show. Call their bluff and send them home to Chappaqua.
Rock on Sista!!!!!
I just heard ed rendell say Obama can do it on his one without hillary.; Can you imagine that??!!! Yes he can do it on his very own. he does not need her for anything…
And Rendell if I’m recalling, has been a solid Clinton supporter. . .
yup, I almost fell right out my chair when I heard him declare this. Isn’t it funny how ppl like he can turn around and support the nominee and she just can’t do it…
She is the scum…of all scum…she is very idiotic
And Rendell is scum: it’s called the Opportunistic Personality Type.
They will meet tomorrow when they are both scheduled to speak at AIPAC. She will list her “demands.” He should simply state that he does not negotiate with terrorists. The party will force her to endorse him anyway if she intends to have a political future.
Aravosis is always the most fun to read when he’s pitchin’ a fit — I counted at least several instances of “nasty woman”. Go, John.
Yeah, and it just so happens a woman is at the top of the short list for a lot of people — Sebelius.
I think Hillary’s going to try to hold the “I’ve got 17-18 million votes and you do NOT have a democratic coalition without MEEEEEE!!!” argument over Obama’s head and probably the DNC’s while she’s at it. There’s an end to this around here someplace, but she’s determined it’s not going to end pretty.
Power is a funny thing. After Clinton’s speech and the cable TV blather I was fretting, “Oh shit.” But after Obama’s speech I was relieved. It’s over. Clinton can’t stand up in front of a crowd anymore because there aren’t any more crowds for her. From here on in it’s Obama’s stage.
All he needs to say is that he’s going to take his time deciding on a running mate. Let Clinton say out loud that she demands an immediate answer and let her stew publicly. As the weeks and months go by, you let H. Clinton get smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror. Maybe make a series of appearances in New York. Invite Clinton to stand next to you. Her choice. If she doesn’t appear, let the rest of the party in NY appear next to you. Let her absence speak for her. You and your surrogates continue to woo the Clinton supporters, the independents, and Republicans who are tired of the Bush bullshit. Make appearances with Edwards, with Sibelius, with every other Democratic face you can. At some point people will realize that Clinton isn’t necessary.
Bitten nose, meet spiteful face.
But, of course, I don’t need to say any of this. Barack Obama is the best politician I’ve seen since the sixties. He’s got a lot of enemies, but he knows who and what he’s facing.
I think that makes a lot of sense. Obama is calmness and order and magnanimity. Clinton is agitation and chaos and pettiness. It will end as it’s supposed to end. And Clinton will recede and become the footnote in this campaign she deserves to be.
Clinton is choosing this moment to raise money rather than concede.
That’s how I read it, too. She wants money for her debt.
This is truly disgusting: her website feedback form that she mentioned in her speech will be counted as a vote of support. Comments optional. My boyfriend and I wanted to send her notes saying “drop out”…. but I’m worried it will be counted.
…counted as support, that is.
thanks for the warning
guess I won’t fill out the form
just blew her chance to quit with some grace…time just beat her down politically, so she can’t get up…
absolutely…she’s been given an awful lot of slack without consequences for her actions from the obama campaign, and tonight was an open opportunity to make a statement in support of the party, and make a graceful exit…that, obviously did not happen, nor is it likely to.
obama’s in a tough spot here…and the easy and most effective way out is to ignore her, because if he goes on the attack, it’ll reinforce her position among the dead enders.
it’s time the party elders came together and ended this. and harshly, imo.
there needs to be a rallying round the nominee, and she can no longer be allowed to act with impunity.and on that note…l’m logging out.
g’day all.
How about the party officials invite Clinton to talk about how to get behind Obama for the fall. She shows up, she doesn’t show up, or she shows up and makes a fool of herself.
As I’ve said, as a DLC Dem she was a Republican Lite. She doesn’t really represent women (although many older women see her as an icon), she represents money and power. She’s gamed a lot of people, some of whom will wake up one day and realize that it was Hillary who stole the kishka.
Even truer than you could imagine, Jay.
Obama should not meet with Hillary until she concedes..don’t make her VP…
The Democratic Party should abandon Hillary..Clinton.. now..
Obama gave a gracious speech. If any Hillary supporters listened to him.
You know Hillary is very likely to interpret that as a sign of weakness and pull more extortionary concessions from Barack.
She is beyond redemption.
Gov. Rendell of Penn. just said Obama can win Penn. without assistance from Hillary. Do we see true Democrats leaving Hillary??
That is very good news indeed.Ed Rendell’s own election was not a little due to the support he recievd from the black electorate around Philly and Pitt.
She is such an ass hole!!!
nominee? Ok. The closest she might get to VP is getting Very Punched by Michelle.
Beautiful. I never type this, but seriously – LMAO.
I switched off the dreadful Harold Ford, Jr. just in time to catch Jeffrey Toobin’s epic truth-telling about McCain’s speech. I hope it makes it to YouTube.
Yes Toobin was awesome! He said exactly what I was thinking. McSame’s repetition of “that’s not change we can believe in!” was so cringe-inducing and pathetic! And what did he have in there, 40 supporters??
McCain’s speech: Clueless.
Clinton’s speech: Graceless.
Obama’s speech: Inspiring.
Everytime I watch Hillary exit a stage I swear I can hear her muttering ‘suckers’ under her breath.
Look at her record. If you own a multinational, she’s your candidate. If you are woman, she’s leading you off a ledge.
Hillary has basically made Obama an ultimatum today: make me VP now or I will end you.
And here is where the line is drawn. She was at her strongest awhile back. Every day the glow fades. She may not get out of the way, but she’s fading.
Wow. He is on fire.
So glad I work nights. i might actually be tempted to watch.
Please tell me you guys heard Anderson Cooper say “but I wanna be your boo…” to Donna Brazile! Hands down the most hilarious moment of the night. If this doesn’t make youtube I will have to post it myself!
Saw that, too ๐
But did y’all see Toobin call the Clinton campaign “deranged narcissism” after Berger read those stupid e-mails from Clinton’s supporters whining that this should be “her night”?
Hillary Rodham Clinton can go straight to hell.
Now…back to celebrating the next President of the United States–Barack Obama!!!!!!
from My Black America (a lot better than the other one I posted at another thread):
Tonight’s the night for high-heeled sneakers and champagne!
I’m searching redlasso for the clip, but i need a time.
It was about 10:55/10:56 PM. I have it on TiVo but I have no firewire card right now and won’t for a few days!
i’m on the west coast (PDT), is it save to assume that was closer to 8pm your time?
Sorry no, that is 10:55 EST, it was after BHO’s speech.
thanks, i’ll check redlasso again to get you the clip.
VivirLatino has it
thanks.
I’m getting an error over there, but it’s on youtube now too…
Thank the Goddess I don’t get teevee reception here. You guys expose your eyes to the bleeding for me. I’m grateful to read your comments, and not see the embarrassment — Harold Ford sounds pathetic!!
Yes, the gas has been let out of the DLC, or so we hope. I really hope Obama can stay out of their claws, but I fear he’s already been put in the talons, and is contemplating some squeeze.
I personally don’t think Obama is a great progressive, I think he’s a centrist like Willie Bill C, and will get corrupted by power and the force of global politics and economics to become a global capitalist like Mr. Clinton and Mrs. Clinton. I don’t have high hopes, but damn sure I’m voting Obama in November! Shee-it, I voted for Kerry, holding my nose . . . another DLC hack.
Back to square 1 . . .
I think that Obama’s better than Bill. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be so much work to sink him.
Ok, Bill in “92 . . . I should have been clearer.
I think that Obama is a centrist, and that’s better than nothing. Or the Clintons. Both Clintons were always DLC right-wingers. Examining their careers I think that both Clintons were always inside players. Take a look at this essay:
http://www.namebase.org/news01.html
and some of the other essays at that site. This one gives an alternative, more radical view of Bill Clinton from back in 1993. I’d say, on the whole, Daniel Brandt called Bill Clinton for who he was way back then.
I would say that Hillary led a parallel career. I suspect that when she spent a summer working at a law firm in Oakland that was defending black radicals that she was probably floating information to the FBI (or the CIA, under the original Operation Chaos). Likewise, when she was working on the Dems Watergate staff she was in the perfect location to let someone (like the CIA, who had people all over the place for that caper) know what was happening behind closed doors. Working for an anti-union corporation such as Walmarts? Wife of the Governor of Arkansas while the CIA was dropping cocaine over Mena? (By the way, Bush’s drug czar, Asa Hutchinson, was the federal prosecutor in Mena’s neck of the woods during all that cocaine importation.)
In short, the two of them have been toilers in the fields of the rich and the corrupt and have been well-rewarded for their work.
As for her iconic status with middle-aged women, I agree with that saying about some of the people some of the time. But some people take a long time to catch on to what’s happening.
Well, just as I suspected. I’m not one for digging details, but my intuition is usually spot on. ๐
I’ll take a look at the site.
I don’t think Obama has such creds, do you? He’s an innocent, and I think that was part of Clinton’s frustration with this campaign . . . she had done the dirty work for 40 years almost, and this upstart, this half-breed, comes along at her crescendo . . .
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/state/#MT
Mitt Romney won the GOP primary in MT tonite. That should tell us something about the enthusiasm for McCain on the GOP side.
๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ :O
LOL LOL!!!!!
That was when the GOP voted in MT.
not 14th.
Holy crap!
What problems with the base?
I’m going to sell my bicycle and send the proceeds to Hillary.
I’m gonna steal your bicycle and send the proceeds to McCain!
If the GOP primary was Feb 5, and the Dem was June 3, did the state of Montana pay for these elections? If so, why is state money being spent on private party elections? What provisions in our national and state laws have determined that the state should pay for elections run by private parties?
Would pulling out of public funds destroy the two-party system that has so ended our democracy?
After listening to McCain,Hillary and Obama, it occurred to me that any President of the US from this time forward is going to find himself in what Zakaria calls the Post American world. That means that the dyas when American can dictate the economic and political conditions of most of the world is gone. The President in this new era has to be able to act with humility and treat other people as his equals and not carry the proverbial big stick.
It seems to me that only Barack has grasped the new reality.McCain and Hillary are stuck in atime warp egged on by their AIPAC supporters. At $4 a gallon gas,the American people are in no mood to launch more and more wars aginst just about everyone on earth so Hillary can fake her bullet dodging prowess at Tuzla.
I agree. I think we’re stuck with $4 gas, probably should have been $4 in 1980 in my way of thinking, but the truth is that the US is fading, the bad kid on the playground finally hauled off to the corner for a very long time out. ๐
There’s article in, I think, the Asia Times about the Pentagon’s power in the world. That’s the big challenge. We’ve moved into the age of empire and most of us shmucks here at home think we’re still in a democracy.
Whether or not be can curb the Pentagon’s forty-five year reign of rule is the question of what America will be.
No surprises here. Obama’s my Senator and I knew the rest of America would join the train to Happy Town.
But thanks go out for me to Booman Tribune that kept me sane during the Hillary Debacle.
I started the night yelling, “Fired Up, Ready to GO!” and sending text messages containing, “Are you smelling what Barack is cooking?” I ended it firing away text messages containing, when is this sore loser going to concede?
CNN pundits were actually giving Obama and putting his historic election accomplishments in perspective without mentioning a preacher, Appalachia whiteys hating him or “working class” workers.
My night spiraled downhill quickly during “Denver, Denver” chants, sparked by a classless woman who can not give Barry O his deserved due and wants us to email her.
The pundits should be constantly chattering about the difference between McCain and Obama but instead, it is should Obama pick her as VP.
PLEASE! If this is how this woman acted in defeat, what kind of character would she have shown as chief executive? Disgusting.
It struck me tonight how ‘old’ McCain was acting. He was very patronizing towards Obama. There’s ‘being’ old and acting old. That tone basically said, the Republican party is for old people who don’t like the change those ‘young’ people want to bring about. What the hell..Obama is my age and I’m not ‘young’ but mature. How ‘old’ does one have to be in order to be given credit? Obama gave McCain a zinger tonight when he said that he ‘honoured’ McCain for his accomplishments but wished that McCain could acknowledge his. McCain better get himself a ‘young’ or younger acting VP because how inspiring is he towards the young republicans? How stark tonights’ contrast was; McCain acting fuddy duddy and patronizing, and Obama, classy, solemn and above board speech..
Ingrid
Do young Republicans still exist? The last 8 years seem to have turned this species into a rare breed.
They exist, but they are becoming a rarer and rarer breed. Those incredibly rich trust fund kids are a part of the gang. Also the religious nutjob home-schooled kids who have no exposure to the real world also join up. But that’s about it as far as I can see.
Yeah, that’s about my perception too. Normative values have changed a lot, too – I was the only openly out (bi) person in my high school, class of ’98. 4 years later, when my sister was at the same school, there were tons of out kids. Even the evangelical Christian wing of family all know out gay people, and also are aware of environmental issues… You can’t fight certain kinds of social progress, I think. ๐
I thought McCain was trying to poach the senior citizens and post-menopausal women who now ONLY support Clinton to move over to his side. He paid tribute to Hillary as a woman and friend. He’s her great defender, ya know. And he also talked about how Obama intends to raise taxes on senior citizens. (Of course he didn’t mention that the only senior citizens affected by any tax increases under Obama are those who are already richer than GOD.)
But he failed miserably if you managed to catch all of the speeches tonight. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to have him make a speech the same night as Obama was an absolute FOOL.
If he had decent delivery, it might have made sense. But the way he delivered that speech, he might as well have been reading from the phone book.
TexasDutchie,
I was expecting McCain to start shouting, “Turn down the radio! Get off the lawn! Your bicycles are tearing up the grass!” The next youngster he relates to will be #3 Mrs. McCain, the one that will come after the beer baroness.
Harold Ford Jr is a fucking asshole and threw away his own campaign in 06. We don;t need him and luckily we found out how big an idiot he was before he was elected to the senate.
how many people were at McCain’s speech?
anyone know?
btw, he lost Montana tonight.
how many people were at McCain’s speech?
Four, plus the freeze-dried corpse of Walt Disney.
roflmao
just watched McCains speech after watching Obama’s live….McCain cracks a weird smile every so often (maybe his dentures were biting?)
he keeps telling us how horrible government is.
i wonder if there were even 200 people there…it sounded like they had to have cue cards to know when to clap.
Harold Ford only exists because there’s a lucrative role in Republican media for an African-American version of Joe Lieberman. Screw him.
I wouldn’t be so sure about that
under ANY circumstances.
Unlike Obama, The Dark Sith DID lie on his Grandmama to try and get votes.
