McClatchey reports that a grand jury has indicted Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska. CBS-2 has some background on the case:
The FBI, working with an Alaska oil contractor, secretly taped telephone calls with Sen. Ted Stevens as part of a public corruption sting it was reported late last year, according to people close to the investigation.
The secret recordings suggest the Justice Department was eyeing Stevens long before June 2007, when the Republican senator first publicly acknowledged he was under scrutiny. At that time, it appeared Stevens was a new focus in a case that had already ensnared several state lawmakers.
The recorded calls between Stevens and businessman Bill Allen were confirmed by two people close to the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way. They declined to say how many calls were recorded or what was said.
Allen, a wealthy businessman and Stevens’ political patron, agreed to the taping last year after authorities confronted him with evidence he had bribed Alaska lawmakers. He pleaded guilty to bribery and is a key witness against Alaska legislators. He also has told prosecutors he paid his employees to renovate the senator’s house.
In July, FBI agents raided that house in the Anchorage suburb of Girdwood. Stevens has denied any wrongdoing and said he paid every bill he received for the project. Spokesman Aaron Saunders declined to comment Thursday.
I hope Sen. Daniel Inouye feels like a total jackass.
Senator Toobs should of course resign immediately.
You know, like Senator Wide Stance did…
And Senator “Diapers” Vitter.
Poor Ted, it’s so undeserved.
looks like 7 counts of false statements. What? No ‘underlying crime’?
I’m going to the beach. I’ll do a frog-marching dance in the surf.
Have a good time!
When do false statements become obstruction of justice…
They got Al Capone on income tax, they can get Senator Tubular Hulktie on false statements.
I printed the Inouye article and called his DC office.
I read the parts about their “peas-in-a-pod friendship” as well as Dann-o’s fundraiser, and asked if he’ll be doing another fundraiser to help with Ted’s legal fees.
They said a press secretary will be getting back to me. That will probably be kind of like the way Pat Murphy’s aide got back to me when i called up asking about Verizon’s refusal to hand over documents even though they got immunity.
Which is to say, no one called.
Dann-o feels pretty good, according to Kos:
gonna be kinda hard to accomplish anything when all his plum committee assignments are in the toilet; teddy the freeloader has resigned his posts as ranking member of both the senate commerce, science and transportation committee and the appropriations subcommittee on defense…“Consistent with GOP bylaws that require Members who are under felony indictment to relinquish their ranking posts on committees…”
that didn’t take long.
via TPM.
The Grand Oil Party owns that brand. And they’ll all say, it’s an indictment..he’s innocent until a jury or judge returns a verdict.
Poor Teddy goes down a series of indictment tubes! It is just too easy to pile on. How long until his son and Young join him?
Am taking heart in the thought that generally Prosecutors start at the bottom and work their way up to the kingpin, that somehow we could hear Teddy doing some singing to get out from under this and bring down….oh please Gawd, some of those who perch above him. Please please please.
I can barely spell it, I shouldn’t be doing it, but it’s just so darn tempting.
Merely another name Bush has to add to his January, 2009 pardon list.
Yeah, I got a fiver on this right here.
different day same sh*t in DC.
Bush needs an early start with those pardons: Cheney and himself, Senators Stevens and Craig, Jack Abramoff, Savfarian, AG Gonzo, Scooter, Rove, Harriet, Bolten on the subpoenas, A disgraced DOJ – Sampson, Goodling, the whole EPA, Wilkes, Cunningham, Blackwater, Hal, KBR…
this list is incomplete.
Inouye feel like a jackass? No, he’s already released a statement today that this little indictment thing shouldn’t interfere at all with Stevens’ Senate duties. Obviously, he hasn’t read the rulebook. But then, hardly any of them really care about rules, whatever the letter after their name.
Yep, Warner’s right. #6 fits Stevens to a tee.
GOL (guffawing out loud)
Inouye. Man, isn’t it time for someone better to represent Hawaii?
