They should put a ban on interviewing the American people and asking them about current events, basic geography, and public personas. The results are always too embarrassing.

As Kristof says in the article:
And I’ve been saying this for months now. Voting against Obama because he’s black makes you a racist bigot asshole. It is not socially acceptable to do that in 2008.
But voting against Obama because you think he might be a Muslim (or insert any of the lies the GOP smear campaigns have been telling about him, i.e. he was born in Indonesia and is not a US citizen, he supports infanticide, he’ll raise taxes on all Americans, etc.) is perfectly and socially acceptable for millions of Americans.
The GOP is shotgunning out lie after lie, falsehood after falsehood, with the intent of giving as many Americans as possible absolution from the sin of racism.
Luckily, they are also shotgunning out example after example of why Republicans should never again be allowed to lead this country under any circumstances.
We’ll see which resonates with Americans.
setting up nicely for the revolution.
McCain said this financial crisis is all Obama’s fault and he has profited from it.
After a while people living in Hoovervilles (tent cities) will rise up and take it out on the first color enhance person they meet…including those with one drop.
Looks like what is resonating with Americans so far is that it is OK to substitute anti-Muslim bigotry for anti-Black racism. Or maybe the two just go hand in hand with one another.
Sickening. Syria is looking better and better.
I remember one comment Obama made when this subject was brought up. He said something along the lines that when this kind of attack was made, it was offensive to many Muslim-Americans.
Regrettably, this kind of stance/statement has not been played up or reinforced as it should have been.
Yes, he finally did say that, and I was very glad he did. It took his handlers far too long to get him away from just denying the “accusation”. And I agree with you that the offensiveness of implying that there is something “wrong” about being a Muslim is rarely part of the answer. Instead, the standard response is a horrified denial, as if it really IS a terrible accusation.
The standard response should be “this implies that there is something “wrong” about being a Muslim, and not only is it extremely offensive to all Muslims, and an affront to the pluralism this country is supposed to stand for, it is also completely untrue. Senator Obama is a Christian, and has never embraced any faith other than Christianity.”
And it is not merely offensive to “many Muslim-Americans”, it is an affront to all Muslims everywhere.
And an affront to every other civilized human being.
The saddest thing is that religion matters at all in a presidential election.
Yep!
It seems that there’s an online push to make a donation to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin’s honor. Apparently, when you make a donation in someone’s honor, Planned Parenthood will send them a thank you card!

Wow – Tommy Smothers with his Emmy. TRULY the tide is turning to the good in this country. It’s freakin’ time.
I met him once, when I worked at HBO. Aside from being brilliant and funny, he rolls a wicked yo-yo, and did a little act for me while waiting for his meeting. He’s awesome. This is SO cool.
Oh my God! Tommy just said, “there’s nothing more scary than watching ignorance in action” – he’s talking about the current administration. He’s still brave. Fantastic!!
For any who never saw the show in its hayday – go rent copies of The Smothers Brothers show. It was political and smart and FAR smarter than Saturday Night Live, not counting a precious few skits.
Network censorship was active and overt at the time, and led to the show’s cancellation. In fact, the show won an Emmy after it was cancelled.
