Welcome to Friday Foto Flogging, a place to share your photos and photography news. We were inspired by the folks at European Tribune who post a regular Friday Photoblog series to try the same on this side of the virtual Atlantic. We also thought foto folks would enjoy seeing some other websites so each week we’ll introduce a different photo website.
This week’s theme is These are a Few of My Favorite Things: Pictures of people, places, and things that you love.
Website of the Week: APOD — Astronomy Picture of the Day. Stated on the site, “Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.”

- Next Week’s Theme: Light. Presence, absence, bright, dim, straight, bent … anyway you want to shine a little bit of it on us.
The theme for October 31st will be: All Things Halloween. Spooky things, dressed-up things, candy things, orange things, Thing things … 😉
Info on Posting Photos
When you post your photos, please keep the width at 500 or less for the sake of our Bootribers who are on dial-up. If you want to post clickable thumbnails but aren’t sure how, check out this diary:
Clickable Thumbnails. If you haven’t yet joined a photo-hosting site, here are some to consider: Photobucket, Flickr, ImageShack, and Picasa.

I love the photo montage. Total eye-candy seeing all those pix together like that … 🙂
And your first photo is perfect — I love all those things too. 🙂
As those skies show, we had crappy weather that trip. We had rain and hail pelting us. We couldn’t do some of our planned hikes because of snow. When we got home and looked at the photos, we found out that the skies made the photos very dramatic.
With my wife of course.
Here’s to great foto flogging! Thanks to everyone. Good job last week, let’s keep up the good work.
The road less travelled w/ company … ah yes, that is a great love. 🙂
Long and winding roads draw me into the photo.
Tulip poplars?
Love the shades of green.
Exactly, how did you guess?
Our woods are full of poplars — in fact, it’s the Indiana state tree. But the leaf shapes of our poplars are more defined than yours.
I can’t believe they were all together in one place.
It must have been like herding to cats to get that picture. 🙂
My sister was down with her 2 dogs a couple of weeks ago and the dogs definitely made me work to get all 5 of them in one picture (the 2 humans were easy).

Luckily the birds did it for me.
This one cracks me up. Cats are such fun creatures.
The bottom picture is familiar. Is that Chateau Frontenac?
Yes. Québec is one of my favorite places to visit.
I love Quebec. I went there on my honeymoon, pre-digital camera.
Red feather boas definitely make a statement — I think they could knock over the roller derby any day. 😉
Agree w/ you on Quebec City — it’s a beautiful place. Love going there.
For the other two photos — are you a spectator or a participant … 🙂
Is the middle photo short track roller skating? Without the banked track and the boards, it doesn’t look like roller derby. I like the determination you caught in the second skater’s face and attitude.
since I got my new camera. As with any new piece of equipment, there’s certainly a healthy level of learning associated with it (covered here) but overall, I’m ecstatic about the new toy and I even have some photos I can share.
I know the theme is “These are a few of my favorite things” but taking photos is one of my favorite things.
I just haven’t figured out how to take a lot of pictures of myself taking pictures. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk…
Enjoy!
And then yesterday afternoon, there was a fire in my neighborhood that I happened to be out taking my son for a walk in with the camera in tow.
And as with any photos I take, they’re subject to creative editing…
on the lenses.
I like really enjoy the perspective I get from both.
The 18-55 is great for large crowd shots, general ‘capture scene’ shots, and other large open shots (see Comcast Center above)
The 55-200 is great for nice tight shots, especially like the squirrel one above. I was actually shooting out my window in the afternoon yesterday – just random shots playing with different zoom lengths – and shooting the skyline, the DirectTV blimp, various buildings around my way, etc.
Fun stuff!
I love the clouds in the Comcast building.
OT, but are you going to the Dawson Street tonight?
I didn’t know what was going on but usually I’m not available Friday evening.
I’ve had both lenses for a year and I’m dumping the 18-55 for an 18-70 a little more versatile and better glass. Once I put the 55-200 on it never came off. If someone is interested in the 18-55 leave me a note.
Does the 55-200 have VR?
Yes and I love it.
Fantastic work! Wow — looks like you really took to it the new cam … there’s no looking back now … 😉
Love the ivy and the green in the first photo.
The Comcast building — wow, no words. As dada mentioned below, it’s amazing! Great, great capture. Looks like that 18-55mm does a great job w/ straight lines. (The 18-200mm which I use a lot doesn’t work well w/ buildings — too much barrel roll/curving.) Nice photojournalistic shots of the fire too …
Very impressive! Glad to see you having such success and really appreciate hearing your thoughts and seeing the photos.
Hmm. That Comcast building would be good for a guest Friday cloud blogging. 😉
😀
It’s a regular event at Olivia’s blog.
I have a couple I could share.
The bottom one is has the drama award all locked up but the 3rd image is the overall winner with its framing, its perspective, its cleverness, its angles, its lines and edges, its colors (and on and on).
Lol. The drama award. A lot of people liked that on on Flickr and they’ve actually all been in Flickr Explore, but not for too long.
The third one was taken on the north side of 30th St. and last time I checked, was a reliably consistent shot to take as water pools there after a good rain and generally, there are no cars right up against the curb where I got the shot.
I thought that was a curbside puddle shot.
The yellow line (actually adding another dimension), under water, helped the deduction.
The series is exceptional.
We all learn on a daily basis.
You now know about “cloud blogging”, even as you did terrifically in that department, before today.
Thanks for sharing your first day — it’s certainly one of my favorite things to see what people do with their new cameras.
I’ve been having a lot of fun with it so far. A lot of shots haven’t come out as expected but at the same time, it was expected as I learn the ins and outs of it.
I’m surprised at the battery life. It’s CIPA rater for 500 shots but I’ve probably already taken @ 700 or so and I think the battery life indicator was down one bar.
wow! the building shot…comcast bldg?…is surreal.
it’s what every architect who ever designed a reflective tower wants you to believe…it just disappears.
just curious, did you do any post processing on it?
regardless, great capture. kudos!
Aside from minor contrast and brightness adjustments that I do to most of my images, I haven’t done anything to it.
Neat photojournalism of the fire.
The “Skylight building”, is extraordinary.
Very very good.
I would post a photo of my family, but the internet being what it is I’ll post another non-human favorite, old cars. We have a local car show right near us in the warmer months. Once in a while something rare shows up. And so it did when I took this photo, a 1937 Cord. An innovative American car, it had front wheel drive and covered headlamps prior to such things being common.
This is my favorite’s favorite car. It was her unrequited youthful dream (she was born in 1921) to own one. To this day if you mention the “Cord” around her, she gives a huge, disappointed sigh.
Nice … 🙂 Amazing the gems people have tucked away … I’m not too familiar w/ cars, but I can appreciate the lines and style of this one!
And you sure know what pictures are my favorite things.
Me Too, and the Bruins.
Steve Yzerman is the best … 🙂
Did he grow up in the big O?
Born in BC, but raised in Nepean (which is now part of Ottawa). He played for the Nepean Raiders … named the arena after him. He’s well-loved.
He was recently named executive director of the 2010 Olympic hockey team. (Previous was Gretzky.)
Is Andrew working on being a goalie? When he’s a second grader take that picture again and his teeth will even look right.
*drool*
(I have the same kettle btw!)
Are you telling me that all Canadian residents have that kettle?
my parents had one (it broke) and so do my in-laws … so there are 4 of us. 😉
my favourite lady…and best friend… with her bird at a construction site at a friends house….obviously bored with it all:
and in her favorite fall spot…
don’t even think about sitting here…l ain’t movin’!

She is a beauty! She looks so comfy in that top photo, resting on the pheasant … 🙂
Good dog, Bu.
and just for grins…for our host, olivia:
l’m looking for one for you too andi…:{)
thanks for getting this rolling!
Hey dada, I don’t need anything more when I’ve already got wonderful pictures of Bu to look at — especially the top one with her toy.
Love it … :B
We love our county library, built with lots of contributions and a little bit of tax money. It opened in early 2002.
A quiet spot on a wintry day.
I love our country library because they have a really fast Internet connection. 🙂
Yep, they’ve got their very own T-1.
Looks like a lovely place to sit and read … or use hi-spd. 🙂
We’re quite happy with it and, even better, its right next door to my building.
The bottom picture makes me want to curl up with a blanket, a cup of cocoa, and something to read.
Hi Teacher Toni! The young one above is really growing up fast! Hope you’ve lots of energy reserves in order to keep up;-)
It is a lovely reading/surfing room. I’ve never seen the fireplace in use. I guess if Palin becomes the Veep, the library will be able to use the fireplace to remove the books she doesn’t approve of.
I’ll ask Yvonne about the fireplace:)

ranks pretty high on my list of my favorite things. Fantastic picture set but my heart belongs to your granddaughter (if someone wants a definition of impish, we can just show them that picture) and that scrawny dog (with wavy lines very close behind).
They are all wonderful. The two bees, the dragonfly, and your granddaughter are my favs. They are all so good.
Shrimp always looks more appetizing to me before its cooked and scallops just the opposite. I think you’ve provided the pictorial proof.
The scallops look really good to me but that’s probably because my brain is reminding me what they’ll taste like after my wife cooks them up.
I’ll bring the carrots, onions, celery, and rice. Anyone else for gumbo?
AndiF,
Are the panoramics crops or in camera. Either way, totally breathtaking, especially the middle one looking down.
I used the camera’s panorama setting to take the individual photos and then used software to stitch together. The middle one was taken right after a little snow squall at, of course, the Grand Canyon. The top shot shows Utah’s La Sal mountains and the valley and cliff leading to them, and the bottom is looking out from an alcove with a small Anasazi ruin near Bluff, Utah.
Andi, what a shock, some of your favorite things are some of mine too.
Olivia, jamoca almond fudge was always my favorite Baskin & Robins ice cream flavor. I like that red canoe shot. I can’t decide if Noods is pissed off or looking at you like you’re food.
